Are you looking for that perfect hard to find Christmas present for the person who has everything? Well look no further, we have a deal for you. For a paltry $100,000 (NZD), you can now have the freedom of flight with your very own commercially produced jet pack. It runs on gasoline, so it’s cheap to operate. I wonder what the insurance would run on that. :D

That's a very reasonable price. You can't buy a lot of supercars for that price. I could see buying a ride for an hour or two, but even if I had the money I probably wouldn't buy one. It's like skydiving. It's an extreme "sport".

It's a toy right now, but I hope enough people will buy it.

There's plenty of room in the sky, and it wouldn't be hard to get a headset to display sky lane info and live position info to create a virtual sky highway. I'm sure gas mileage will improve, though driving a 3000lb car will still be more efficient with good old terra firma providing altitude support :D

So much for the Mythbusters episode where they debunk that exact same design.

They debunked available "build your own internet jetpack designs" :D

If anything, they proved the concept is possible and showed you needed advanced gyro control and precise machining to get it done, definitely not DIY project.

WANT.

I live about 2 miles from my job. It would be very realistic for me to use one of those as my daily commuter. Maybe not cost effective, but I can't think of a better way to kick off the day than a 5-minute tree-top flight over the neighborhood.

Hmmm 103" HDTV or jet pack....the decisions the decisions...Christmas is going to be interesting :D

For the same price, you can buy a small flying car. I think they just made the 1st official flying car with a legal driving license plate now too.

But yeah..... this is worth it anyways.

  1. Buy jetpack
  2. Rob big bank
  3. Fly away without ever being chased
  4. Profit

Wow, makes you think....... I bet we will have police with jet packs within 25 years, no joke.

Your house would have to be isolated out in the country so that when you come home late you don't wake all the neighbors. Someone will have to come up with a noise suppressor for jetpacks so that they can be used where the residents need a good night's sleep.

That's not a jetpack. It's a ducted-fan-pack.

And why can't I edit my original post? I'm still using the same login.

So much for the Mythbusters episode where they debunk that exact same design.

They debunked the ability for someone to build one at a reasonable price , I would imagine if they had $100,000 dollars and 6 months time they could have made a design that worked.

You can't edit posts under Front Page News comments.

The moral of that story is that you'd better be damn careful what you say in a post and that you'd better do a hell of a good job of proofreading your post before you submit it.

Problem, you need to rob the bank to get the money to buy the jet pack.....

few glaring issues
in the US any way its subject to the same VFR flight rules other aircraft are so NO you cant use it around town which kinda kills any use it has
this is the reason we dont have flying cars we already have them there called Helicopters and are subject to FAA VFR flight rules

also what are the failure modes on thing thing what happens if you lose power? etc

hahahah, didn't even think about the FIRST step! I guess if you have $100,000 and need say, a million?.... then my idea is good.

Good point lol

hmmm 30 minute flight time, wonder how much gasoline that takes.. I can see some of us who aren't fatties strapping an external tank on to extend the range even further (BTW I have no idea about how much a "stone" is, I refuse to look it up too because of the arrogant bastards with their "oooh metric is so much easier" tosses in a "stone" as a measure of weight)

Bay Bridge traffic normally an hour... zooom 20 minutes (assuming it could fly at reasonable speed.

looks stable in the warehouse, but how stable is it when a 25mph gust hits you from the side?

Yawn, old news. This is a pic I took in 2008 at EAA Oshkosh.

I wonder what the fuel efficiency is on that thing?

Article is pretty comprehensive guys, answers those questions :)

Parachute, 30km/18liters or 4.56miles/gallon

I thought about exactly that.. think of minority report.. you KNIOW the military wants this..

oh yea.. REAL LIFE TRIBES BABY! Bring it :D

If you looked up what a stone is, I think you might find it is part of the imperial system, not metric.

Arrogant bastards indeed ;)

Fucking awesome. I believe he said its powered by a 4-cyl engine? I imagine that means it'll have an acceptable flight time. Give it 10 years and we'll have these for the price of a Hyundai.

Well, other than not having a jet engine of any kind it's a swell "jet pack."

But I guess "Ducted Fan Pack" does not have the same ring to it...

So much for the Mythbusters episode where they debunk that exact same design.

The main problem the Mythbusters guys have is that when they do things related to flight their ignorance really shines.

I really wish on these sorts of builds they'd bring in some expert help for the build itself. Not just go talk to some guy a JPL or whatever and then go back to the studio and fuck it up because they don't grok things like center of gravity, angle of incidence, moment, aspect, etc...

yea, the video is over a year old. I remember back when it first came out.

Question is, is V2 out yet?
