Well its been a while, and I tried to search to see if there is any new info on getting this to work. I am going to be building a new htpc and wanter it to be 64 bit and support mkv. So far I have not found anything that would enable me to do this simply.

Is there any way to get MKV support in WMC 64 bit?

If not factoring in subtitles, Halli Media Splitter by itself pretty much did the trick for me. Unfortunately subtitles with MKV files or external subtitles don't work for me in WMC.

I have installed the splitter and ffdshow 64 bit and wmc does not seem to recognize the mkv files.

Have you considered using a front end (like media browser) and using the WMC interface as a launcher for an external player? MPC-HC has a lot better picture quality in my experience, plus it has good support for things such as subtitles.

I just install shark007 codec package, you need to install the 32-bit version then the 64-bit version, then run the x64 setting app and set config->subtitle control to FFDshow/embedded. I also set MKV->disable divx media foundtion splitter, as that causes me problems. Switch h264->h264 codec in directshow players to FFDshow and SWAP->use FFDshow for WVC1 instead of Microsoft, as MS codecs seem somewhat diminished (PotC 3 blu-ray plays at accelerated speed with MS codecs, for instance) Then everything plays in WMC, no problem, and I get subtitles (I use .SRT in the .MKV's). Subtitles can be adjusted by Config->configuration items->FFDshow video->subtitles.

All I did was install the Splitter and ffdshow, didn't configure a thing and WMC7 recognized my MKVs without an issue.

Thanks got it working.

I followed the instructions from the link above using the minimalist approach.

Yeah, minimalist approach is great if it works for you. I'd try that first before installing any codec packs. Mine worked fine with just the splitter and the small registry hack. No ffdshow, but I haven't tried subtitles yet. That may be necessary for subtitles or some surround sound formats. YMMV. Glad the OP seems to have got things working!

Same with me - I forgot to mention that I didn't use FFDShow either since I have TMT3 handle any upscaling and processing. I'll probably end up putting it on there if I ever get around to making subtitles work.

you technically just need a matroska splitter, such as haali.
From there, depending on the type of video and audio in the mkv, you might have to install some other stuff.

WMP12 can handle things like dolby digital audio, h264 video, aac audio, mp3 audio, mpeg 4 asp (xvid) video and mpeg 2 video without you having to install anything afaik.
When you run into DTS audio or vorbis audio, your gonna have to have something like ffdshow installed to handle that.

I used to be a huge fan of Media Player Classic: HomeCinema (which I still am)

However, I just switched over to using Media Center with Media Browser and after installing the Shark007 codec pack my Media Center plays .MKV with x264 and DD/DTS bit streaming out my GTX 480 perfectly.

For subtitles, I just installed a plugin to Media Browser that pulls down subs from some database when I ask for them. Never had a problem so far.
