Post some of your favorite gaming moments!

My favorite gaming moment is actually the culmination of my purchasing an N64 back in the mid-90s as a teenager, which began with playing Mario 64 for the first time Toys 'R Us shortly before the N64 launch. I remember playing on a kiosk for like 3 hours that first time. It was my first experience with true 3D gaming, and my mind was absolutely blown. I knew right then and there that I HAD to have that game.

I saved up all my paper route money for the next month or so until I had enough to purchase everything - console, Mario 64, an extra controller, and a memory stick. I remember calculating the exact amount that everything would cost together, including tax, and stuffed the exact change, consisting of mostly loose, small bills, into a brown paper lunch bag (was like $350+). Mind you this was all money I collected from my paper deliveries, and I didn't live in the nicest of neighborhoods, so many of the bills were quite gross.

Finally, once everything was all set, I headed back to Toys 'R Us to make my purchase. When I was cashing out, I dumped the entire contents of the paper bag onto the register, and simply said "Here". The bills were all crumpled up and dirty, tons of coins rolling around, etc. There must have been at least $100 in singles alone. I recall the cashier giving me the dirtiest look of horror when I did that. Should've seen the look of shock on his face a few minutes later when he counted it all up and realized that it was the exact correct amount, right down to the penny.

Played Mario 64 for like 10 straight hours later that day when I got home.

A couple that I remember fondly:
-first time I played Wolfenstein 3D, I even bought a sound card a short while later as the PC squaker sound was no longer good enough for me
-hitting inner circle in Tie Fighter just for the cool tattoo
-canyon runs in Falcon 3.0
-Crusader when I realised just about anything in rooms could be blown up :D
-starting Everquest back when it came out, the world was so huge & later on pulling a few raids for my guild (thinking about those moments still gives me sweaty palms)
-getting my monk to lvl20 in NWN and feeling godlike
-winning my first online league game in Xwing vs Tie Fighter (ex TFA here for those who played that game on the zone)
-Half Life 1, all of it
-Playing WoW for the first time and realising the game had an athmosphere and fluidity to the world I would never have guessed possible from the cartoony screenshots
-Playing EQ2 when that came out and be amazed at the combat animations of my monk

The more recent games, while a lot of fun, will need a few more years before nostalgia bombards them to favorite moments I guess.

- playing through Doom2 and Duke 3D co-op over a lan with friends for hours on end
- Doom DM and CoD:2 over the lan on the terminals at my highschool, graphics cranked to nothing but 8-15 of us in a cramped room having an absolute blast
- getting lost in EverQuest... first MMO, got it right with the Kunark release
- Warcraft 1&2 & starcraft over the lan, Warcraft3 over the internets, getting yelled at by the parents for it suddenly going from 8pm to 3am :-P
- going from PC gaming on a 19" screen to Gears of War on a 60" HDTV...
- any one of the many nights spent in TF/TF2/CS/CSS/UT where it was the dead of winter (in MA) and I had my windows open and a fan on because my computer was OC'd to the gills and pumping out waaay too much heat, good times, pretty sure my computer was just an array of parts strewn about my desk at that time, those were the days...

a little OT, but am I the only one who feels that most (all?) of the best moments were 5+ years in the past?

- Watching the dude die in the nuclear firestorm in COD4
- Hearing Baba Yetu for the first time when starting up Civ3 (I literally sat there for 10-15 minutes just listening to it over and over again)
- Scoring perfect 10s in the diving event in Summer Games for the C64
- Getting the crap scared out of me while playing RE2 and having to watch pr0n to unspook myself

That's all I got.

1. Putting down Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES for the last time, resigned to teh fact I will never beat the first 30 minutes of the game.
2. Playing Street Fighter World Warrior arcade for the first time.
3. The Indiana Jones pinball machine in my local pizza joint when i was a kid.
4. beating the Nihilanth in HL1.
5. Beating Shadow of the Colossus for the first time.
6. Aeris' Death in FFVII
7. Vivi (every scene) from FFIX
8. The story-revelation at the end of Assassin's Creed II
9. Getting my crowbar back in HL2/the screams of the headcrabbies in Ravenholm
10. Flying through the city in Prototype
11. All of KOTOR.

My first character creation in World of Warcraft. I crafted the finest Dwarven specimen to ever walk the earth. During the brief little fly-through video I got so pumped and then the camera just drops in behind you...oh man. The whole world is right in front of you and you can go do whatever you want, at your own peril of course. I'll never forget the first ~24 hours of playing with my college roommate. We both got it for Christmas after release and played all of break almost without stopping. I was never so blown away by the scale and depth of the world before even having the balls to hop on the boat to the other continent.

I quit over two years ago, but sometimes I get the urge just to go play through the Dwarf starting area one more time.

My dad taking me to the local Meijers every Saturday morning to play the brand new Super Mario World on the recently released SNES... then getting an SNES and a Sega Genesis in the same Christmas of that year!! It was bad ass

nothing will ever top

BOOM HEADSHOT!!

ok ok seriously

my favorite gaming moment was seeing Aeris get whacked on FF7, it was the only time, and i mean the only time in my life, that a video game managed to cause me to feel sad.

I still consider this to be one of the greatest moments in gaming history. First time I ever witnessed a main character killed off.

1. The first time I played Super Mario Kart, Goldeneye 64, L4D1, and Smash Brothers 64. These are the few times were I played one round of multiplayer and knew that I was experiencing something epic. Not my all time favorites, but between these franchises, I have spent at least 1,000 hours.

2. Portal - every second of it. This i my favorite modern gaming moment. I was nearing the end of the game and thought I was just finishing the training. I just felt emty inside after beating it because it came and went so fast.

3. HL 1, train ride at the beginning and the final boss. A lot of meh in between but this always stood out.

4. FF6, Chrono Trigger, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 4. I feel bad for lumping them all together, but I can't say anything to do them justice. FF6 is my favorite game of all time. I would also throw in Mario RPG and Zelda: A Link to the Past, though these are a step lower.

5. Modern Warfare 1 campaign. I definitely have problems with the game, but the storytelling in this was awesome.

6. Super Mario World - while I love the entire game the moment that stands out for me is when I got that 96th exit for the first time, as well as beating Tubular (my nemesis level) for the first time. I also had a couple of runs in this game getting all 96 exits in one sitting.

7. Playing Doom 1 & 2 co-op with 3-players in the dorm. We would do this for hours, using speaker phones as our in game communication.

-------------------------------------------------

Honorable mentions:
Resident Evil 5
Heavy Rain
Indigo Prophecy
Borderlands

Wow , Thats what its all about right there. Your living the dream man! Keep it alive!.

Almost forgot to mention

Playing Resident Evil 1 for the first time and having the crap scared out of my when the first dog jumped though the window in the hallway. Needless to say I fumbled the controller and died.

TFC back in the day. First time ever playing with a mic with my buddies.
First time playing CS. Map was inferno. I remember thinking to myself "I have to BUY my guns?" (came from playing TFC to CS).
CS tournaments at local cyberpub.
Playing CSS beta.
Amazing battles in BF2 (various)
Playing through Ace Combat 2 before going to the airshow the same day.

3 to 4 hour games of natural selection mod for HL1.
sniping people on the vehicle pad on katabatic in tribes 2.

Winning my 1st FFA/DM match online (AVP2).
Buying a Geforce 256 to play some game that I can't remember.
Playing DOOM for the 1st time.
Wrote my 1st game on the Speccy.
Getting stoned and playing SSF2 with my buddies; While listening to bangin' Techno ('91).

Side note:
Owning a PS2/Xbox/GC/DC&PC - Thinking how hardcore I was lol

That's just a few....

In no particular order

Taking second place in an online Quake 3 Arena Test tournament held by Alienware before the full game ever came out. I won an Aureal A3D sound card. By far my favorite soundcard ever. It absolutely rocked Counter Strike. It should have been considered cheating.

Playing in a free for all with the one and only Dennis Thresh Fong in Quake 3 Arena Test. Another prize of the aforementioned tournament.

Chasing down Gordon Freeman as he (originally played by you) as he jumped into the portal in Half Life: Opposing Force.

X-Com UFO defense. Managed to stuff two blaster launcher hover tanks into the elevator leading into the Cydonia Base. Old school X-Com people know what I'm talking about!

Medal of Honor Allied Assault single player: Running onto Normandy Beach with my then brand new set of Klipsch Pro-Media speakers. I had that shit CRANKED.

Quake: One of the first times I ever played Quake online I met a player who was from Spain. It blew my mind thinking how we're in the same virtual world but in reality we're on opposite sides of the world.

Quake/Team Fortress: Walking out onto the battlements on 2fort for the first time. I was in awe.

Quake 2: Taking the shitty bus to the mall, plunking down my dough, then reading the manual booklet while waiting to take the shitty bus back home.

Dark Forces: Finding out it was Kyle Katarn that (supposedly) stole the plans for the Death Star.

Tie Fighter: The entire fucking game.

Modern Warfare: The level where the nuke goes off. I think it was called Shock and Awe. The combination of the music, audio cues, and radio chatter made it very immersive. For instance there was radio chatter that a bomb squad type team was on site then moments later you see the blast and you realize that those poor guys didn't stand a chance. Later on in the game there is a scene while heading to the missile base and two nukes launch in the background. I honest to god felt tension in seeing those things go up into the sky.

Modern Warfare 2: Walking out of the bunker to see the Capital Mall turned into a war zone. Roach and Ghost being murdered and bodies set on fire.

PKing in the early days of UO, pre-Trammel. I will never forget my days in Ultima Online, there won't be anything else quite like it.

Playing Quake online for the first time

The opening GDI mission in C&C (my first RTS experience)

Portal

Epic Tribes 1 battles

this is the greatest post i've ever read on this forum, if it's completely true, then that makes it even more so.

1) Completing Final Fantasy 7 with everything (level 99, knights of the round, black chocobo, etc). Must of had over 100 hours into that game...
2) Passing the first place car on the last lap of a marathon race in Gran Turismo 2.
3) The ending of MGS 1, MGS 2 (really moved me for some reason), and Final Fantasy 10.

In no particular order:

1. staying up until 3am with my cousin to beat RE2 and then not being able to sleep for 3 days
2. beating twisted metal 2 with my brother after getting it for xmas
3. first time i saw people playing the original warcraft in my computer lab in elementary school. i was in 5th grade. My mom was teaching an after school photo editing class and the lab tech guy was playing it...... instantly hooked.
4. getting the WC2 demo and playing the same three levels over and over again.. and blowing up sheep
5.Pulling an all nighter with best friend beating Halo CE the first time on Co-op
6. My first time being killed by a random grenade in COD MW
7. WoW closed beta
8.Getting my original epic mount in WoW
9.Beating Fallout 1

Three moments really stick out for me.

Advanced Dungeon&Dragons for Intelevision. You could generate random dungeons, that were up to 64 levels down? Was halfway down of one these dungeon, and found 2 books. One let you see thru walls, the other let you walk thru walls. I could see glowing items and just go get em. All the while avoiding the monsters. I was in nirvana. Until I came across a particular monster that wiped the floor with me. It was a magical door that could fight back! I was in amazement for days. Now mind you, I am in the middle of the roughest of neighborhoods in Camden NJ (NEVER EVER go there. EVER), where kids my age should be selling weed or some shit for some drug dealer. Here I am trying to explain to dudes, these magical books I found, and this oh so devious door that can fight back as I try to pass thru it! They thought me crazy. Needless to say I went on to college and make a six figure salary, and they...because they didn't realize the true power of these books are dead or in jail.

Half Life. The scene when you're crawling in the ceiling, and you're listening to some guards who are searching for you. They some how hear you and start shooting into the ceiling! You start backing up as the bullet holes are forming in the pipes...was pretty amazing. You must remember this was totally unheard of at the time, having this sort of action in a FPS.

And lastly EQ. Christ, where to start there. THE biggest one was breaking into Plane of Fear. There may have been like 5 guilds in the whole game at the time who could do it. We spent DAYS on strats, (and I de-lvled like 5 times). I will never forget seeing the sky raining blood, I was totally in amazement. My buddy got a sword out of there that procced a huge AOE for big damage. BUT damaged him also. He was sooooo pissed.

My 1st character in EQ was a Euridite(sp) wizard. Which I soon abandoned for a DE wizard. But I was lvl 5 or so in the starting area there, and I was about to die to a snake or some shit. Out of nowhere come this barbarian warrior with this big ass 2 handed sword, and a dwarf priest. Both lvl 25 or so. and and one hit the snake. They really did come out of nowhere, because I THINK you were stuck in first person mode initially in EQ? Or I just didn't know how to change the damn camera yet. Anyway they saved my ass. They both role played to perfection saving my skin, and escort me to safety. I got caught up in the moment and started role playing also. Aaaand I've been hooked ever since.

Getting Commander title on my disc priest on WoW @ lvl 49 and having epic mount. Riding into lumber mill with a bunch of my guildies on said epics while all others were on regular mounts.

Part 2 - people seeing our pre-made AB guild runs and going naked and /dance'ing because it was better than death + 5 cap :D

getting a SNES for christmas
playing online game for the first time (Quake 3)
playing online game with broadband for first time (Quake 3)
kinda random but playing through the l4d1 no mercy demo with my friends for the first time
countless memories of playing Urban Terror, BF2, Guild Wars, and various 4 player games on SNES/PSX/PS2 but nothing specific that really stands out

in no order...

-dialing into the local BBS and playing some text based D&D style game every day...."you have stumbled upon Sir Phillip who is level bla bla bla and is asleep" Do you want to 1. Attack 2. Run away...etc" Attack him and steal his sword of course!!

-dialing my friends up for some Descent action

-going to Dads work and playing Doom on their nice computers and being amazed at the gun swaying back and forth when you ran

-Dad bringing home Wolf 3d and reading the PC-13 warning and thinking that this game is going to be bad ass

-Mom bringing home the NES and my brother and I playing super mario for hours and hours, and watching Mom move the controller in the direction she wanted to go....hhahah

-playing the demo for Battlefield 1942 and having a blast driving the jeep around wake island with all my college buddies riding with me, then installing Desert Combat

-dad promised me if I got all A's on my next report card he would buy me a Gameboy...he came home from a business trip and had forgot about the 100 bones he had hide in his shoe which I found the same day I brought home my straight A report card...

-in college I worked in the architecture computer lab, so we always had the latest and greatest rendering cards and monitors...all the other labs had crab desktops. Friday nights me and my buddies and all of the other lab consultants would all sneak in and play some serious CS and UT.

-playing RTCW and constantly checking that website that rated players world wide based on their score and stuff. Finally after weeks of non stop play being number one on that list for a day or so.

-my first semester in college when Quake 3 arena came out...The dorms had just gotten wired up for lan and internet and playing the living crap out of that.

-going to my rich friends house when he had just bought like 32mb of ram and watching the dots go across the screen super fast when loading doom

- many more. great thread!

A few of mine

Getting my 3DFX Voodoo card and finally getting GlQuake to work. Walking into the room with transparent water that contained the Lightning Gun and quickly realizing I could see guys in the water but since the gl cards were so new only a few people could see me. People kept thinking I was cheating and at the time I suppose I did have an unfair advantage :)

Installing Links386 pro and playing a course I had played in real life and being blown away how accurate it was.

Action Quake2 - Probably the most fun I've ever had playing video games and I was REALLY good at it. I absolutely loved this mod and played it so many hours I can't even begin to think how many..

Which lead to Counterstrike, which lead to Day of Defeat, which lead to COD, which lead to... :)

I'm 41 and just created a cool basketball arena on a Minecraft Server. Asking people to warp to it then having them say how much they like it is really rewarding.

Action Quake 2....Had almost forgot about that mod. It was incredibly fun! Getting the M16 or the MP5 with the stealth shoes...good times.

I preferred the mp5 with the red dot

I was deadly accurate with that thing and could stand on top of the tall building on Urban and basically control the entire map :)

Oh and remember being able to flying kick people off buildings? :)

I have a ton of good memories from my time in College.
We used to stay up for days playing Mario Kart 64, Street Fighter, Twisted Metal, and Tekken 3.
When Final Fantasy 7 came out I bought it on launch morning and none of my friends/roommates went to class or slept until we went all the way through it.

Damn!
How could I forget FF7!?

Yeah I was sooo chuffed that I got the lucky 7777hp for cloud - took me ages!

...oh yeah, and very few things can compare to the first time I saw GLQuake. That was like the difference between the NES and Genesis X5.

Seeing & playing Super Mario World for the first time at the supermarket.

This.

I distinctly remember seeing Super Mario World and the SNES for the first time at a local K-Mart during a holiday shopping trip with my parents. I had just turned 16 and had been a huge Nintendo fan ever since the NES, and was a huge video game freak having grown up on Atari 2600, 5200, and 7800.

I remember being just totally amazed and not wanting to put the controller down. I had a line of 7 - 10 year old kids waiting their turn behind me. :D The feeling I had I still can't describe to this day, but every time I see video of Super Mario World I feel it again for a moment.

In my opinion Super Mario World is the greatest platformer of all time. The only thing that comes remotely close is Super Mario 3 for the NES.

Damn, I have shivers just thinking about that... and now being 35 I feel... old. Can't believe it was almost 20 years ago.

^ M M M M M M M M MONSTER KILL KILL kill kill kill kill

2. Playing Track and Field a buddy's house to get me hooked on multiplayer games for life.
3. Playing Super Mario 3 and getting the raccoon and frog suits.
4. Megaman 3 and hearing the music on Gemini Man's level, I knew that Megaman would be a lasting series.

SNES:
1. Final Fantasy 3 (6) opening scene with the walking mechs. My favorite game of all time.
2. Earthbound. All the funny, crazy, awesome moments.
3. Super Mario RPG - getting the lazy shell and finally beating the Final Fantasy boss.
4. Super Mario World - flying with Yoshi for the first time.
5. Zelda - A Link to the Past. Loved the puzzles in that game.
6. Street Fighter 2. Amazed that an arcade game could turn out so perfect on a console.
7. Donkey Kong Country. I could not believe the graphics in this game. The first level is one of the best designed levels of all time. I just loved the humor in that game.
8. Mortal Kombat 2. I took the day off school and probably called my local game shop like 50 times that morning to see if they had it in stock yet. Knocking somebody off the bridge into the pit of spikes fatality was so fun.
9. Megaman X2. The racing bikes, air-dash, this game was just a ton of fun and I loved playing it.

Genesis:
1. Sonic the Hedgehog. Completely blown away at the frantic pace that I could play at.
2. Mortal Kombat. Enabling the blood code and seeing Fatalities as they were meant to be seen was mind blowing.

N64:
1. Seeing Mario 64 on a big screen TV at Incredible Universe and my jaw dropped to the floor and I knew I MUST have this console and this game. Then getting it and watching my jaw drop progressively lower with each new Bowser battle.
2. Goldeneye. The single player was epic and multiplayer with buddies at my house was fun for years later.
3. Mario Kart 64 - the yelling and swearing while playing 4 player multiplayer and just laughing at some of the insane moves my friends and I could pull off was great.
4. Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Link in 3D? You betcha!
5. Cruising USA. Another well done arcade port that was a blast to play with friends.

PS1:
1. Final Fantasy 7. Seeing the commercials before the game launched, I just knew I had to buy a Playstation for this game. I remember just being blown away from the second I started the game. Killing off a main character? WOW.

PS2:
1. Grand Theft Auto Vice City. Finally getting the mansion and having your thugs help you out whenever you got into a fight on the mansion grounds. Also finding all 100 hidden packages and getting the military chopper. So many great memories with this game.

Xbox 1:
1. Countless late night matches of Halo Multiplayer.
2. System Linking 4 Xboxes together with 4 60 inch big screen tv's and having a 16 player tournament.

Xbox 360:
1. The opening scene of Gears of War where you escape on the Raven. I could not believe I was seeing this level of detail on a console.
2. Walking outside for the first time in Grand Theft Auto 4 and seeing the cars on the street and marvelling at how far video games have come.
3. Halo 3 multiplayer. I only played it for 2-3 months, but lots of fond memories with the melee weapons and the gravity hammer.
4. Playing Modern Warfare 1 and doing the gunship level in black and white camera was just EPIC.
5. Playing Modern Warfare 2 on the first level and realizing just how intense a single player level could be.
6. Playing Guitar Hero 3 (my first time playing a music game) and LOVING it even though I was struggling on Easy mode.

PS3:
1. Playing Uncharted 2. That damn game felt like I was playing an action movie, not a video game. Impressive to say the least.
2. Playing Ratchet and Clank and thinking that I was playing a Pixar movie, not a video game.

PC:
1. Watching the cutscenes in Starcraft 1 and being blown away.
2. Playing Quake 2 in Open GL for the first time with my new Voodoo 2. Going from software 320 x 240 where the graphics looked like a monkey puked all over the screen to crisp, clear, and beautiful 800x600x16 was awesome.
3. Getting the Quake 2 Extremities Pack and playing CTF maps with a ton of hard-AI bots to hone my skills. The grappling hook became my best friend.
4. Seeing Quake 3 on DM_17 play on a GeForce 256 at my local computer shop. No framerate slowdown when firing a rocket, I knew I had to get a GeForce card.
5. Playing Quake 3 for the first time on my GeForce 2 GTS. I remember seeing reflections in the environment and being blown away.
6. X-Wing and TIE Fighter. Death Star trench run was so much fun.
7. Playing through Battlezone 1 and realizing that you could combine a FPS with a RTS and have an awesome game on your hands. (Sadly, was kind of disappointed with BZ2).
8. Playing Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and storming the beaches of Normandy with my surround sound cranked up. I think I had to replay that level about 50 times before I finally survived and made it to the next level. But I was perfectly okay with replaying it over and over again.
9. Homeworld 1, playing against my buddy and harassing him early with the multigun corvettes and then warping in about 25 ion cannon ships right behind his mothership and hearing him freak out was epic.
10. The opening scene of Half-Life 1, seeing the helicopter at Black Mesa, wow.
11. All of Half-Life 2, especially Ravenholm, and thinking that PC Gaming had reached its pinnacle.
12. Playing Doom 3 in the dark and getting utterly creeped out.
13. Playing Soldier of Fortune 1 and getting the microwave gun. Holy hell, that was so awesome.
14. Being on the fence about buying NOLF 1 and finally getting it only to be completely sucked in and loving every minute of it. Each new level brought new gadgets, new hilarious dialog, and brilliant gameplay. Damn I miss that game.
15. My first all night LAN Party. We played tons of Quake 3 and I got owned by my buddies, but then we had a 6 hour Age of Empires 2 game where I won with my massive army of Persian Elephants.
16. Getting DSL and playing CS Beta 5 and laughing at the ridiculous kill/death ratios I was racking up.
17. Playing CS Beta 1 at a LAN Party and on cs_mansion, I ended up camping after all my team died, and I killed the remaining 4 people on the opposing team all by myself and a fight nearly broke out.
18. Playing the Half-Life mod "FireArms" for the first time. It was a small 6 party LAN game, but we started an internet game and got a 6 v 6 going and we played for hours. I loved the different combinations you could make.

Arcade:
1. 4 Player X-Men for hours at Nickel-cade with my buddies. (Local Utah arcade that charges like a $10 entrance, but every arcade game is a nickel)
2. Simpsons 4 player with my family at the local mall whenever we'd go.
3. Mortal Kombat 3. Going to the mall after school and spending like 10 bucks in quarters trying to do all the fatalities.
4. X-Men Children of the Atom - playing as Iceman and being unstoppable was awesome.
5. Marvel Vs. Capcom - trying to try every combination of players to figure out what was the best.
6. Virtua Fighter - not the greatest game ever, but seeing a real 3D fighter was mighty impressive back in the day. I used to play as the ninja and do the ground sweep in the corner to win by ring out :)

Playing quake free-for-alls through a 14.4 modem far too late into the night.
I can still hear the pinging of pineapples bouncing around.

1 versus 10 on CSS and winning. My heart was exploding the whole time, you know if you've been the last survivor on your team and hopelessly outnumbered.

Def was for me playing RTCW Assault Maps in MP. Beach, Market Garden, and the airbase map (I forget the name)
