My favorite gaming moment is actually the culmination of my purchasing an N64 back in the mid-90s as a teenager, which began with playing Mario 64 for the first time Toys 'R Us shortly before the N64 launch. I remember playing on a kiosk for like 3 hours that first time. It was my first experience with true 3D gaming, and my mind was absolutely blown. I knew right then and there that I HAD to have that game.
I saved up all my paper route money for the next month or so until I had enough to purchase everything - console, Mario 64, an extra controller, and a memory stick. I remember calculating the exact amount that everything would cost together, including tax, and stuffed the exact change, consisting of mostly loose, small bills, into a brown paper lunch bag (was like $350+). Mind you this was all money I collected from my paper deliveries, and I didn't live in the nicest of neighborhoods, so many of the bills were quite gross.
Finally, once everything was all set, I headed back to Toys 'R Us to make my purchase. When I was cashing out, I dumped the entire contents of the paper bag onto the register, and simply said "Here". The bills were all crumpled up and dirty, tons of coins rolling around, etc. There must have been at least $100 in singles alone. I recall the cashier giving me the dirtiest look of horror when I did that. Should've seen the look of shock on his face a few minutes later when he counted it all up and realized that it was the exact correct amount, right down to the penny.
Played Mario 64 for like 10 straight hours later that day when I got home.
