What do you think of those supermicros? We just bought out a place that has a lot of them. Other than the fact they are loud as hell in the little server room I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them.

For clarity, these are the SUPERMICRO AS-1012G-MTF 1U Barebone Server from NewEgg with the H8SGL-F motherboard. (Pics to follow)

So far I freaking love them. I have years of experience with Supermicro gear and their hardware is rock solid. Yes they are loud and there's no way I'd use them anyplace except for a dedicated server area, but damn... the performance and features they deliver at that price point is unbelieveable.

Comparable Dell and HP servers would be at least double the price, though they have a support plan better than just an RMA program back to NewEgg.

I plan on using these servers for a pilot Hadoop program which is designed to run on plentiful commodity hardware. A server going down in the cluster can be absorbed by the rest of the cluster, so it's better to buy lots of cheap servers than a few Big Servers with support.

What are the specs on the machines you picked up?

What are the specs on the machines you picked up?

Not sure yet. But all of the supermicro's are less than 3 years old. The one that I want to keep my hands on is less than a year old dual core 32 gb of ram and crap tons of hd space. I see esxi in it's future

Well New Shoregear switches came in today.

Apparently in the quick start guide they forgot to mention that you need to be creative to setup these little fuckers, but after some spare parts it's fixed up and they are ready to be shipped to what will become their home.

hi just posting in a legendary thread that was miraculously restored and unlocked

i took 4 semesters of CISCO class in high school years back and I don't remember anything about it :( all I did was play quake 3 against my classmates

sorry no picture :( but you can google an RJ45 cable and that is my contribution

This is very familiar. We played Warcraft 3 and UT2k4, but the CCNA academy at my highschool was more of a LAN club during school hours then a actual class (though everyone who took the class did pass their CCNA exam, that was considered our final. If you passed you got an A, fail and get an F).

Scotch lock was quicker.. and less liberal.. and I don't have any electrical tape around

wanna hide your ip addresses ?

Assume that was directed to Calvinj. Why should he? They are private RFC1918 addresses (172.16.x.x). Don't think revealing them means much - kinda like me telling the world my laptop is on 191.168.1.100.

You going to steal my stapler? I'm going to doubt that anybody on these forums are going to see this equipment any closer than pictures, but if it will make you happy i'll go back and fix it.

Well in light of needing some more porn around here. Proxim Point to Point Wifi. And my desk the last few weeks:

Well HAY! that's my IP address too. Good thing they're non-routable else we'd have a problem. :D

My new switch, just arrived yesterday

My new modem. But only because the SB6180 is not yet available.

@Calvinj Have heard some good things about Proxim, how do you like it so far?

Not bad will be great to see it hooked up.

IT was easy to setup and get going. Works with all of the vlans I have. Bigger than I expected, but can't wait until it gets hooked up either. Don't really know what to expect. It worked exceptionally well on my desk

should be:
Alcatel OmniStack 4024G (2x SX + 24 10/100) (the 4 blurry ones)
Alcatel OmniStack 4024C (26x 10/100) (the 2 above the FX models)
Alcatel OmniStack 4024F (2x FX + 24 10/100) (the one with the blue cable and the one above)
Cisco RPS600 (without front)
Cisco 3620 (without front, RPS power)
Cisco 2621 (without RPS, just AC power)
HP ProLiant DL380 G2 (2x 1,4GHz P3, 1,25GB RAM, 4x 36,4GB 15k SCSI)
Nortel/Bay Networks Passport/Accelar 1200 (name depends on which manufacturer has its label on it, has 32 10/100, 8 FX and 6 SX)

it's all just for some LAN parties, got it for a really low price, though I'd love to have Cisco gear :(

shadynet, I have that exact same server. it was a pain to fix the iLO card to support newer browsers though. had to break out some old floppy disks
Great server, but wow, what a power hog

what a power hog

I know, but since it's only used on LAN parties where there is a nice decent 63 amps 3 phase power source available, it's not that much of a pain. I would never ever use one of these at home, my home server is an Atom 330 ;-) I might just get another Atom server for smaller LANs to provide the services the HP does. It's used as FTP for patches and SPs and whatever freeware and update stuff you need, so I just ordered some larger HDDs and might think about getting a HP MSA30 with 14 72 Gig drives and if possible in the next time upgrade the server to a DL 380 G4 or DL 580/585 or maybe something else.

whats going on here? Where has the "new" page gone? Can we talk here on not? If not, once again mods just remove this page without the need to give me an "infraction"

@shadynet: those two 4024s in the middle don't appear to be doing much so I assume they must be spares? If so I can provide an address that you can send them to where I will make them feel more useful. ;-)

the pic was taken back when I picked them up and just unloaded them out of my car. So this is why they look like being unused. All of them were in use last weekend for a 180 person LAN party and it went like a charm :) not comparable to when we used cheapo china switches. Though 4 of them only trunk to the Nortel each with 400Mbit/s it still was a low ping network. Everybody on those switches knew that if he would download stuff from someone else on another switch, he would be "killed" by 20 other people ;-)

a pic of the Nortel and the 4 4024G

V/U/800. There's some more goodies in the cab next to it, but I'd probably get myself in some trouble posting pics of those :x

CP stash? lol

Set up a pfsense box the other day to test it out, old dell P3 1GHz 512MB 4GB, put my dual 100MB intel card in it. Runs up to the wireless which is connected via wds to my other one upstairs (been too lazy to run cable under the house for years now...). Ethernet cable runs from that wireless over to a 5 port on the Sun system and then another cable goes to the two cheapies crammed in between the performa and vcr. I really need to upgrade to a gigabit...either 16 or 24 ports. I have a 48 port Extreme but it's so frickin loud and only 10/100...have an old Cisco too but also 10/100. One of the switches there is also connected to my 10MB hub on the floor which only the performa is connected to (card does not support auto-negotiation).

I'm in the DL380 club as well, two in that stack as well as a DL360 and my Integrity. ( I need to get rid of some of this crap )

Adam,

The new office is quite an upgrade from the old! I love the in wall a/c unit to cool the old network room! ;)

What method do you use to bring the CCTV feed to the TV in the office? Is it just an analog splice into the camera feed or is there some device pulling the feed over the network from the capture server?

I am also curious to what this setup is used for.. Looks like camera monitoring, but you said the rack of PCs supported this, is each monitor linked to one server? Beautiful work!

Cheers!

CalvinJ, what I do is just make a loopback plug with 2 short pieces of wire and a plug.
What is that mini serial cable...how is it pinned out?

Not sure what it is but it was in the parts box and worked. We actually had it laying around for some production automation stuff.

I actually had our shoretel support on the phone and had to improvise quickly. Had a short cable with one end and scotch locks right there

Yeah the new office is a big improvement. I forgot about the old AC, lol, when i started it wasnt being used.

Anyway the DVR we build (we build them in-house and use cards made by GeoVision) has an HDMI connection to my TV. I have two video cards in the system. I also have two GeoVision DVR cards in the system which give me 16 channels per card. Each card also has an analog output for up to 16 views per card.

Sooo i have an HDMI going to my tv, theres also a VGA connection going to my rack-mount KVM. Then I have another VGA connection going to the boss's tv (he wanted vga, not sure why) so he views all 32 channels on his 50" (while i have maybe 10 on mine because all i care about are a few cameras). Then theres another HDMI cable that goes to our COO's office. I also have an HDMI cable going into our conference room 60" plasma, which will bascially be split via an HDMI splitter with one of the other feeds.

My boss also has 2 smaller 27" tvs in each corner of his office where peopel walk in, 16 channels on each.

The 30 monitors you see is located in a public safety office for a town (the town concists of about 5-6 towns within itself)... basically we have DVR's scattered all over the place, in many parks and public buildings... something like 35+ systems i think. Anyway, at public safety we have 28 computers built. 1 of them does dual monitors for their own camera system (top two monitors) and then theres another system that has dual video outputs we use as well (basically anytime theres motion in the entire town, this monitor shows the camera... its not really used for anything other then to look neat, its the older system we had in so they could see motion, back when we only had like 3-4 systems).

Anyway now each monitor monitors a different facility. Of those 26 remaining monitors maybe 24 of them are for cameras. Some systems monitor multiple facilities (like for instance we have 1 monitor watching over a beach, which concists of 3 or so DVRs, one in a parking lot, one at a building, etc...).

We also have a monitor that has all the locations listed with a map of each location, and a camera on the map. The icons for the cameras on the map blink if theres motion so its easy to see at night. Also the images only popup if theres motion on the monitors so public safety doesnt have to watch 30 live streaming video screens, they just look to see if anything pops up during motion.

They also have the capaility to control ptz's throughout the facilities on one screen, and on another screen they can lock in a camera and use a microphone to talk over a PA system at the facility (remembered that simpsons episode?? yeah its exactly like that).

Then we have 1 system designed to monitor the alarm systems at various facilities. They act as their own "central station" to keep an eye on their properties.

Its a very cool setup, about a year into it at this point and we're pretty close to completion, just a few things to tie up.

Also each system has voiceover that comes on a speakr that says "motion detected at XYZ facility" so they dont have to exaclty WATCH the cameras, they can listen for motion.

Heres a newer photo after we moved some of the monitors and angled them down and got the facilities online:

Goddamn Adam you have a nice office.

I share an office and it is a piece of sh*t with leftover furniture, hand-me-down chairs and broken laptops galore waiting for me to get warranty support on them.
