Browser issues: The latest update is that there is progress on the in-game browser in displaying all of the servers. ETA is still unknown but this work is at the highest severity levels to have completed.

In Game Lag: A rollout of an increase to the sv_maxRate from 5000 to 25000 will be issued today. Instructions on how to do this on your server will come once it has been rolled out. Keep in mind that this parameter tune will help with some aspects of lag that has been seen.

11/10/2010: 6:35pm EST - The changes to all subscriptions have been done to enable sv_maxRate of 25000

In order to activate this change, simply restart your server at your convenience. On restart, the server will come up with the new sv_maxRate Setting
http://forums.gameservers.com/viewto...p?f=11&t=41310

Please, if you're an admin for a Dedicated Server, please do a restart. I have done this but unable to find my server to test it.

Possible reason for why this stuttering is occuring.

Also, this is just one of the problems, which affects my system and is known to have same effects on a LOT other people's PCs. Some people, however, can have stable low FPS caused by other issues

So, as you could guess from topic name, I work a lot with 3D graphics. And I was unlucky to get this game in its current state
Of course, after seeing people with plain stupid - or totally wild-assed guesses - I decided to clear the things a little.

The actual cause for game's overuse of CPU is poor usage of LODs

Every stutter is caused by objects loading right during the game - instead of loading them before the match (hey, fast loading screens are evil!).
To confirm it, take a very fast loadout (Lightweight + Marathon) and go play with bots (exclude server lag) on a big map. You will sometimes notice barrels, boxes and other clutter objects pop out of nowhere right in front of you - or being unable to shoot an opponent behind a not-yet-loaded scenery.

Developers ignored the Time-memory tradeoff for different systems

Game barely uses 1 GiB memory with maximum settings (and usually it's 600 MiB) - with 2 GiB being a minimum requirement. If objects would load immediately into memory (or just at a longer distance), it would put a little extra stress on GPU and memory, but far less on the CPU - you will only load each object once and before the round.
It's an optimisation for consoles: XBox 360 and especially PS3 have tons of CPU power and little RAM.

"But I have a Quad Core i7!": the cores still share the same system bus and the same HDD to load the data from. Current performance will greatly depend on the chipset and HDD data rates as well

And now for the ugliest. Developers disabled any opportunity to change LOD settings

That's right. The real reason for problems is no longer configurable in the LOD section of game's config: game keeps resetting range multipliers to default values.
So nothing can be done by editing the config_mp.cfg

Quick workaround for now

Set fixed low texture detail (less texture size to handle)... and just wait at the round start until the map is fully loaded. It usually takes about a minute for the basic LODs to load with my CPU far below requirements (Athlon 64 X2 4000+ 1.6 GHz), after which the lag spikes greatly reduce.

Oh, and of course. Wait till the developers disable this console-designed optimisation
Maybe someone can repost it on the official game forum? I'm a little too busy for that

TL;DR: the problem is a non-configurable engine option. Wait for a fix

DirectX Update

1. Run vcredist_x86.exe in Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty black ops\Redist
2. Once that is done run DXSETUP.exe in Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty black ops\Redist\DirectX

-

Close Steam (Disables Multiplayer)

1. Run Steam in Offline mode.
2. Start Black Ops.
3. End the steam.exe process.

-

Steam settings

1. Right click on Black Ops Multi in steam games
2. Go Properties -> Updates -> Untick Enable steam cloud sync.

If the above doesn't work try the following.

3. Steam > Settings > In Game > uncheck “Enable Steam Community In-Game”

-

Process Priority

After running the game (SP or MP), tab out. If you have trouble tabbing out, press Win+L. Then, right click your taskbar at the bottom and open the task manager.

In the task manager, go to the processes tab. Right click on the BlackOps process and set the priority to high. Next, do the same on steam.exe setting it to low.

Steam will no longer overpower Black Ops, until you next restart the game or steam.

PS/EDIT: It's important that you lower the priority on steam as well; don't just increase the priority on the game. Also, it's much safter to use high and not realtime for the game priority.

Config file changes

1. C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty black ops\players
2. open mp_config with Notepad
3. Change "seta r_multithreaded_device" change to 1 if you have a CPU that has more than one core lol
4. Change "seta r_multiGpu 1" change to 0 if you have 1 graphics card
5. Change "seta sys_sysMB "1024" to your RAM e.g. mines set to 3024

Optimize Game Rego:

cl_maxpackets 100
snaps 30
If you have a good connection - cl_packetdup 0

com_maxfps 0

Fix Lag Spikes:

r_blur_allowed 0
r_distortion 0
r_dof_enable 0
r_glow_allowed 0
cg_brass 0
r_cachemodellighting 1
r_cacheSmodellighting 1 (I think I may have missed this one)
If you do not have a multi-GPU - r_multiGpu 0

I know some of them have already been mentioned a few hundred times, but that's what I changed and I'm playing fine. So don't flame.

Good thread idea I think.

I'm also suffering from the stuttering issue like most people and would LOVE a fix for it obviously.

i have an idea, lets make yet ANOTHER Black Ops thread.

Anyone posting fixes in a centralized thread the day after release is a good idea. I don't want to wade through another large thread about random bitching and trolls to find a fix.

Game sucks. But seriously, get a good rig and you will be fine. If not, buy an Xbox which the game was made for in the first place.

I ran mw2 flawlessly don't see why I need to upgrade. Pretty sure its just shit multi player

go to console (~) in game, and type /cl_maxpackets 100 (default is 30). It should drop your pings about 10ms across the board.

Interesting, that looks like a Quake CVAR command. If thats the case you could create an autoexec.cfg in notepad instead of manually typing in those CVARs

I'm tired of people posting this bullshit about "get a better pc."

It's NOT THE FUCKING PC's, it's the damn game.

Check the steam forums, check the CoD forums. People with high hexa pcs with top of the line nvidia and ATI cards are even reporting the problem of the huge lag/fps stutter problem in the game.

I ran MW2 FINE on my old ass 9800GX2 pc. I've since upgraded and now have an ATI 5850 and from 2gb to 4gb of ram. The game is UNPLAYABLE for me , constant stuttering and spikes, even turning textures to low and AA off, same thing.

There's no way in hell the game should take more then that to run, especially since it uses simply al modified version of the same engine with nothing major or new in the graphics department.

Go to "Add or Remove Programs", find Call of Duty Black Ops, right click, and click uninstall.

Problems solved!

is multithreading the same is multicore?

don't know if I should do the cfg change to multithreading...

This. Take your $60 and buy a few pet rocks. They will be more entertaining than this piece of shit.

Anyone who is having stuttering problems. Looks like the game by default is only set to use 1024mb of RAM. In the console, type seta sys_sysmb 4096 or however much ram you want the game to use.. just set it higher than the default 1024. This fixed the stuttering for me.

thx for the suggestion but my configuration always reverts back to 1024

also - i notied the GHz value was set at "0.00965494" or something like that... maybe worth a look?

You know, I tried this, but the game keeps setting it back to default.

You can try replacing the values in your config.cfg in the <gamedir>\players\ folder
if it reset then...
set the file to read-only. and it should definatley stick.

make sure you remembered you set the file to read-only in case you want to change any other settings from in-game

The best fix for the whole Black Ops problem

However I will add that alt tabbing while the game is running and setting its priority to high made it a bit smoother. There is also a config launcher on the steam forums someone made that helps as well.

Or just wait for a patch that will be coming real soon.

"/connect" would be nice or how about actual Steam features like "join game". Just saying.

I was, the settings do not take, the game just reverts them back. I even attempted to set the file to read only and no dice, the game still contains the original values.

I haven't changed anything apart from increase graphics to max and a couple of controls, plays perfectly fine apart from mass laggy killcam, that's it.

Anyone have any idea how to fix not being able to play with my brother? We are in the same house, and while some servers stutter, it isn't too bad most of the time. The part that IS bad is the fact that if just one of us is playing, we never really get disconnected from servers (very very rarely), but if both of us try to play together, one of the two of us gets disconnected every 2 to 5 minutes.

sounds like a router issue on ur side.

Any idea what the issue might be? We played BC2, HoN, LoL, SC2, and about 7 different MMO's together, all with no issues at all. This is the only game we've run into a problem with .

if it is in fact a resource delegation matter, then your LAN connection has nothing to do with it.
Reports basically are saying that the way the game uses resources is not balanced. For instance, it'll use a 100% CPU, but only 20% of your GPU causing stuttering due to your CPU being pegged out at a 100%.

If I understand correctly, connection and for the most part, your hardware, aren't the issues. It's the way the game uses your hardware that's the issue.

So every time I play SP I get either power service termination or plug and play termination. Any suggestions?

patch released a few minutes ago (8MB). seems the lag/stutter is just about gone now, for me anyway. i get a few hitches right when the round starts and that's about it. not sure if it's an actual fix to the stutter, or just that the server browser is now correctly showing all servers and the loads are easing up (thus less stutter?).

Another odd problem I noticed is that for some reason I hit level 9 and 10 like 3 or 4 times. Is it part of the game design that you lose your level if you leave the game after you level up? Is it one of those things where you have to finish the level to get the level up you got during play?

This isn't a huge issue because I'm not going to play this game because it is such a terrible piece of shit console port, but I was just curious if anyone else noticed this?

Anyone know how I can get my FPS up?

I average around 22-25fps right now.

I got 60+ in MW2. My ping stays around 45-60 so I'm not really sure what the problem is?

No improvement when I set all settings to lowest possible either.

I've added COD:BO to www.pcgamingstandards.com it passes all the standards except for widescreen the FOV issues cause this to be unplayable for almost all aspect ratios, luckily widescreengamingforum.com have fixes to allow FOV changes above the limited 80 degrees, I link directly to the fixes there.
