I'm thinking about getting an iTouch for the apps, checking things online, etc. I have an ipod classic (160GB) for my music, but I wouldn't mind keeping some on the iTouch. Initially I was trying to choose between the 32GB and 64GB versions of the iTouch, but I'm wondering about other options. Are there any devices similar to the iTouch, such as anything by Android, that compete in price and features? (Note: not looking for a phone)

Get the ipod touch. If your only going to use it for apps then 32gb should be plenty. if your going to put a lot of music, movies, docs, etc on it (and you have an extra $100 to burn) then go for the 64gb. I've got 128 apps currently on my iphone and they take up just under 7gb of space (according to itunes).

You might seriously want to consider the Archos line. They support any media file including flac and mkv. Their devices also support plug and play. Just plug it into your USB like a thumbdrive and start dropping files into it.

No proprietary software so you can pretty much connect it to any unfamiliar pc and know that you can upload your media files into it.

Yeah... I did read up on the Archos 43, and really liked what I found. I preordered it on Amazon back around 18OCT10, with the expectation that it would be out by the end of October. But then the release date was moved to November 1st, and now sellers are reportedly saying that it wont be shipped until the middle/end of November.... I'm not sure how long I really want to play that game.

So I'm currently leaning towards the iTouch 4 at the moment...

Archos is a GREAT brand !! I've had my Gmini 420 for 6 years now (bought in 2004), and it's still going strong ! It's scratched and worn, has been dropped many times, but works great. It has a 20Go drive, plays all kind of music files, videos on the color screen or on your TV (came with the cables), pictures (it's slow I have to admit), acts as a storage media when you plug it in, and is recognized by media players. It also came with a bunch of games. The only thing it doesn't do in internet browsing :( Oh, and Archos put out OS updates a couple of times to support more video file formats !
A big +1 for Archos

Im not in the same camp.

I had the Archos 504 media player. Was annoyed to spend several hundred bucks on it only to find out you need to spend another $90 to get the software to actually make it do what it said it could on the box.
Had horrible tech support.

Got the docking station, always had errors.

Was watching TV one day and heard a weird sound from my desk. goto the room and my archos was on its back on the desk, spinning around. WTF right? turns out the big battery on the thing decided to have a meltdown and swelled the battery pack, squeezing the harddrive, and for some reason, the whole unit started to spin. Plastic sticker inside was melted it got so hot.

googled it and it seems to have been a somewhat common thing. Archos tech support played dumb, wanted $150 for a new battery and denied and problems regardless of me linking to a discussion forum with several dozen users having the same problem.

That and archos locking the firrmware of its older units so you cant upgrade or even replace the harddrives. Was a big selling point for many people. Buy a media player that uses a laptop HDD so u can swamp it out for a bigger one or replace if HDD goes tits-up. Archos hides in new firmware(unremovable) that locks the drive. When my battery went supernova it broke the HDD, so I contacted archos tech support and asked about replacing the drive, they said I could buy a new one.

Of all the companies I have dealt with over the years, Archos is the most douchbag-ish of them all. Id rather be raped by a belt-sander then give them another penny.

but dont take my word for it, take a look around the archos user forums and see how happy people are there.

tbh i was in the same position you are in right now back when the 2nd gen ipod touch and the archos 5 were still around in FS and BB.

i bought the archos 5, and realized that even when it had flash, the experience of browsing on the web with that device was not that great... sure it was goood... but it wasn't great. the resistive screen just doesn't do justice. also like others have mentioned, you have to put additional money in order to use some of the built-in features... which to me... is pathetic. also i would have had to pay 40 bucks just to buy a dock to charge the device to full in 3 hours... when it takes 8 hours or something to charge it through USB... which is the only charging medium it came with. also i payed 400 bucks for this device.... i kinda expected a lot more. i was all pro archos 5, but after using it, it's just not that great.

afterwards i went back to FS and returned the archos 5 and immediately bought the ipod touch 2nd gen 8 gb... and boy did it make a difference. Sure i couldn't go on flash sites... but considering how bad the experience was on the archos 5, i didn't need to do such a thing on the touch, all i needed was something to store music, and browse the web occasionally (i had a laptop for flash applications). on top of that, you could get lots of apps... where as the archos had a very limited market in it's app store. and now the 4th gen has a dam camera, makes me so jealous... i kinda want one now LOL

to me, i would stay away from archos, i have lost trust with them completely... lol there are better things out there for the price of an archos.

ps. do people REALLY need flac format music... i mean if you don't have headphones that deliver the sound quality as flac output then there realllyyy is no point in getting the archos solely on the format of music. oh and just an FYI i am not an apple fan boy.

edit:

also if you have a good enough computer, uploading music via itunes is not that much of a pain in the ass... i had a p3 733mhz computer when i had the ipod video (got it for free) and i HATED itunes because it would take forever to convert my music. but now it's just so easy to use itunes because if have a much much much much much better computer when compared to the p3 LOL

Can anyone tell me what makes GALAXY TAB special or better? I'm just curious. I'm planning to buy this.. but just for the safe side y'know. I'm still a noob.

Personally, I'm not interested in the Galaxy TAB because I want something more pocket-sized.

I think I'm going to cancel my Archos 43 preorder and go with the iTouch even though I'll pay a little more (though I'll get more storage space). I've seen some user-made video and written reviews of the 43, and the device seems to have some annoying bugs out of the box. It lacks the fluidity of the iTouch out of the box - even if the Archos 43 uses the more "open" Android OS compared to Apple's. I want something reliable, extremely functional, and smooth. The 43 has some good ideas, but there are too many reported flukes right now for me to want it.

Lastly, I don't like what I hear about Archos' support from what I've read in this thread and threads from the Archos forum. This applies to both customer support for problems and Archos' product support. For example, keeping older models up-to-date with the latest software instead of forcing the customer to get the latest software by buying the latest product. Apple seems to do a better job of this.

I've said this already, but I'll repeat that these are the conclusions I've come to after doing a lot of reading and research.... I don't own either product. I've done my best to make an educated decision here. If anyone has any input to add, I'd love to hear it.

I bought an 8gb touch to use as a Sonos remote and for some basic apps in our family room. Bought it used for under $100 and it is perfect for this purpose.

you may rethink that when ios5 comes out and no longer runs on older devices, like when ios4 was released.

i had a 2nd gen ipod touch 32gb and it was near unusable with 4.0 and didn't have 1/2 of the features that 4.0 gave. but i guess i cant complain I ended up getting a iPhone4 to replace it.

im waiting for the samsung tab as the iphone has pretty much replaced my pc (27" iMac) for email and most browsing, but i would like a larger screen and as much as i find flash annoying it would be handy

I got a JetAudio Cowon S9 and its amazing. The longest I've had it playing for was about 36 hours straight and still have plenty of power left (keep forgetting to turn it off at night >_<)

If you don't want to get an iPod, you can always check the Anything But iPod forums.

I'll have to agree with this. The Cowon S9 is an awesome PMP. I think it has the best SQ out of the box compared to the I(place what you like here). If you're an audiophile, definitely this hands down and it also plays video impressively!
