Hi!

I have the following in my system:
- Gigabyte GA-M68SM-S2 mainboard
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (model AD04800IAA5D0) @ 2.5 GHz (not overclocked)
- boxed CPU cooler (included with the CPU)

The system sometimes shuts down because of CPU overheating although the CPU fan is set to max speed in BIOS. I've also changed the thermal grease between the CPU and the cooler (I've put Arctic Silver 5) but to no avail. The ambient temperature is about 25 °C. PC is clean of dust.

I guess that the original (boxed) CPU cooler doesn't do its job well enough.

I'd like to install a better air cooler but I have difficulties in finding a model that can fit in the tight space around the CPU as the CPU is surrounded by a row of capacitors from one side and RAM slots from the opposite side (see the picture below). The space is 92 mm wide while the height of the RAM modules is 30 mm. Due to the mini tower case the cooler's height is limited to 145 mm.

Could anyone recommend a CPU cooler that would fit in this system?

TIA

This Zalman is what I just installed on my 939 rig. I have an Asus motherboard and the space is tight, but this fits nicely and cools well.

similar design as everything else. Much cheaper. I'd put it on just about anything. I just bought an 6 core AMD and will be ordering one of these to put on it since I can't find the AMD mounting piece for my OCZ Vendetta II.

**if you want something that will keep things pretty cool and also very quiet, I'd look at the Thermaltake Blue Orb II. I used to run a Golden Orb II (see: smaller than the Blue Orb II) on an X2 and I set my motherboard to monitor the fan speed based on temps. The thing wouldn't even spin during boot. It would only lightly spin during basic computer use. During games it would go fairly fast, but it wasn't a harsh sound at all.

I put an AC Freezer 64 Pro on my X2 6000. It was quieter and cooler than the stock heatpipe cooler. The open cage around the fan gave it a little more room - it was close to the RAM on my AN9 32X, but it did fit without any modifications.

The 212 should be pretty similar to it, but even a little better with the 120mm fan. Not sure if that height will work for you though.

The CM Hyper 212 is not compatible with socket 939 motherboards as far as I know.

May want to see if u can find a replacement stock cooler if the original is failing. From what I recall, the stock cooler for the 4800+ rocked.

oh that's weird. I assumed the mount bracket that surrounds the socket would be the same. It looks similar enough.
