Think you can avoid targeted ads by only giving out minimum info on your Facebook profile? Think again, the company has applied for a new ad-targeting patent that will serve ads to you based on what your friends / family like.

Facebook filed for a patent to further hone its ad-targeting technology so that ads can be based on what a user's friends interests may be. The reason for this, it appears, is so that Facebook can better serve ads toward users who have not filled out their profiles with enough information for traditional ad targeting.

Thankfully, we have things like AdBlock available. I really don't have an issue with ads in general, but I only allow them on sites I feel deserve it, like this one.

tidbits like this make me happier every day that I never joined the cult of bookface :)

I don't think there is anything really wrong with targeted ads. I think a lot of people, myself included, just don't like the idea of somebody collecting data on me.

However, I visit a lot of bodybuilding and supplement sites, and now I have to stare at the awful supplement advertisements with "The Situation" from Jersey Shore on them. I hate that guy, and now I have to stare at him all the time when I hit a site with targeted ads.

I've always wondered about the efficacy of 'targeted ads.' In my own experience, other than in response to specific search terms, I have NEVER experienced accurate targeted ads. I wish advertisers could get their act together. Hell, I'd sign up with an ad agency if they could guarantee I'd never be bombarded with ads I'm not interested in.

It doesn't matter, they use your city to have specific stores in town (and places to eat) most obviously already.....

They use all the info, and all of it can be assigned to your IP and everything you ever look at and want. Most traffic and sites hit google or akamai host servers, and now facebook with the little LIKE button on everything. They know everything you look at.... everything.

Why can't I target ads for myself? I like my SD deal alerts...Oh right, there's no margin in selling me only loss leaders.

M'eh. Not a facebook member any more.

They can stuff it, as far as I'm concerned.

Indeed... especially when it's not over the top as well.
