AMD Athlon XP kicks butt =D

Ahh I miss my 2400+ XP-M and NF7-S v2.0. That thing was a power house. The first computer I ever truly built was an EPoX 8RDA+ and a AXP 1600+. Those were the days.

Yeah my first build was with a 1700+ XP, unfortunately I didn't have the heatsink on properly and it fried... replaced it with a 1800+ I believe, grabbed a GeForce 4 MX because it was a GF4 card (didn't realize it was about as powerful as a GF2)

Yeah, those bastards got me with the whole MX deal (though mine was a GeForce 2 MX 400) I thought I had stumbled across a deal of a lifetime because it had 64MB of ram and cheaper than the "other" GF2's, most of which had 32mb.

The MX400 was actually faster than the stock GeForce 2. I had one, then moved to a GeForce 3 Ti200

I dont recall the performance figres of a regular GeForce 2. I do know it was slower than a GeForce 2 GTS and Ultra

yep. and it really went downhill from there, with the possible exception of 790i

does anybody remember the nforce 500 series? Didn't think so :p

nforce4 4x was (and still is) always good to me on socket 754, particularly my Abit NV8. It is a great overclocking board with the skt 754 Venice cpu's (3000+, 3200+, 3400+). I just built a system with that board since I had all the parts laying around and popped in a couple of 3200+ Venice cpu's I got cheap on ebay. One went to 2.8 and the other to 2.84. Got my best ever SuperPi 1M score with the the 2nd one (31.54 sec.) And while the Abit won't support the mobile 4000 my brother's Gigabyte nf4 4x board does and I lazily took it to 2.8 simply because he needs a reliable box. If it were mine it would be at 3.0 ghz or beyond.

I have two Athlon XP systems still around.

1: Palomino 1600+ on an Epox KT600 board
2: Barton mobile 2500+ running around 2.5 Ghz. I managed to be the recipient of an SLK-900, so I'm wondering how much more I can get out of it. Previous was a Swiftech MCX462V clip on. Motherboard is an AN7.
It was a very good chip for its day, was cheap to build, and ran like a raped ape.

I had the lanparty also. It was so sweet, had the uv pci slots, and ram dimms. What a kick ass board. I was always a big fan of DFI boards. I wanted an ultra infinity but never got one.
Loved my DFI boards up until the UT-X48-T2R. Just too much going on there for me to bother with. My ultra infinity and NF4 Ultra-D were awesome though. EP-8RDA+ and the ultra infinity skt A boards are my two favorite mobos of all time

don't forget the nForce 3 and 4, I had an MSI nf3 and the nf4 Ultra-D skt 939's. both were pretty good. everything else that nvidia put out later than that was garbage

My biggest regret with my 1700+ rig was getting a GF 3 Ti instead of a GF4 4200 ti. Which reminds me, does Twinmos still make ram chips?

I have fond memories of overclocking these suckers... My first Athlon XP was a Pally 1.53ghz, couldn't get much out of that, maybe 1.8ghz if it was cold outside. But then my dad asked me to build him a computer, so of course I had him buy a 1.46ghz T-bred and I cranked the shit out of that baby. I think I was getting 2.1 ghz out of it pretty easily, the first 50% overclock I'd ever had since my good ol' Duron 700 (anyone remember the pencil unlock?). Then I upgraded mine to a Barton 2500+ and overclocked it to 2.5ghz. Good times.

My first home build was an Athlon XP 1500+(Globalwin CAK38/Delta 7k 60mm) and Epox 8KHA+ (via kt266a) with 2 x 256mb Corsair DDR300 sticks, a Leadtek GF3 ti200 64mb, 40gb 7.2k Seagate Barracuda, Antec sx1040b w/ 400w antec and a 19" Samsung 955DF running Windows XP.

It ran 24/7 and played games online for hours on end overclocked to a modest 153mhz fsb, it would show as 1800+ instead as a 1500+ in the info which made a newb proud! I ended up killing it and the board when I was swapping cpus into my other socket a board(ECS K7S5A+) so I could try and overclock my Duron 1ghz in the 8KHA+. That Ecs board and duron are still working this day, but at least I had a backup rig to use for a bit.

I replaced it a bit later with a S939 A64 3000+ and GB K8NS Ultra NF3 and used most of the original parts other than a 9600pro AGP, 1xOCz 512mb ddr400, 520w PSU and some more hard drives I had added to my AXP system.

That A64 ended up lasting a good while until I got my Q6600 system in Nov 07 and a few upgrades later here I am!

So I ended up riding out a low end Athlon XP from launch to the launch of the S939 Athlon 64 and I never really got to experience the awesome tbreds and bartons which came later. I did however get to do a lot of reading about them here on the forums.

When I was still using the AXP I had received a RMA on my GF3 ti200 so they sent me a ti4600 vivo in return which got moved to a 2nd system when I got my 9600pro. So other than a video card upgrade which wasn't planned it had handled all my use with no complaints and due to giving me countless hours of fun and learning leading me to my skills in computers and give me personal access to the internet it will be one of the most fondly remembered CPUs that I'll ever own.
(I can say the same with the A64 that my Dad uses now and my current Q6600) :p

RIP! 1500+

Wooo, some old systems here...

My experience with the Athlon XP's started with an XP 2400+ which was thrown into an old Soyo KT-333 Dragon mobo. Stupid mobo only supported 266mhz ram despite it's '333' nomenclature. A faulty heatsink installation resulted in the frying of the 2400+, and I ended up selling the Dragon.

Enter the Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe and Barton XP 2500. Loved this setup with my Lian-li case, Powercolor 9800 Pro (remember the raw 9800's that could be unlocked to the Pro versions?). Corsair Platinums fed this system wonderfully while my 120gb harddrives in RAID 0 chugged away.

Next I upgraded everything to a Biostar 6150 uATX with a used 3500 Winchester core, upgraded to 2 1gb sticks of PC4000, then got 2 640gb WD harddrives and an X1900GT.

Of course now we are running an AMD 720 X3 overclocked to 3.5ghz, still same harddrives, but am running 8gb of ram now. HD4850 is the videocard and thus far I really have no need for an upgrade.

Good times!

I too was a victim of Nvidias marketing for the Geforce 4 MX440. :(

never had much luck overclocking my athlon xp but my duron 1000 overclocked to 1333mhz without even having to bump up the voltage

:pI also had a Soyo KT-333 Dragon... what a piece of crap that was. That, a gf256 and the old T-Bird... good times.

Over clocking those Athlon XP's was a lot of fun. I don't know what it was that made it so, but I have yet to experience the same satisfaction when overclocking as I did back then. Maybe I'm just older and have other priorities. Whatever it is, it would be nice to reclaim that level of awesomeness once again.

For me, it was the satisfaction of successfully connecting those contacts with defogger fluid and tape, which was way more fun than having to crack the Slot A cases. Then came the realization that I had a beast of a CPU for usually around $60. Lots of fun every time.

I used the de-fogger paint until I discovered the circuit writer pen; much easier. Used it to volt-mod a few video cards later on. Prolly dried up now, but still have that pen somewhere...

Just recently stripped down a computer that has been sitting around for quite a number of years (motherboard failure twice) that had an AthlonXP 1700+. Man.. I loved that thing when I got it.

i used a no. 2 pencil
This++. Though, it only worked for the Thunderbirds and Spitfires, as far as I remember. The Palominos (XP) and newer had their bridges laser-cut and had to be taped or filled in with some insulating material or you'd be shorting something.

i remember i chipped the core of my thunderbird installing the heatsink on there...don't remember which one it was but it was reviewed on here and got pretty high marks...it wasn't a big heatsink manufacturer either

It wasn't a Golden Orb, was it? :p

no this heatsink actually worked well. it was an all aluminum core in an x with fins coming off the arms of the x. anodized gray and had a pretty thin fan on top of it

iirc a few people chipped their cores with ths heatsink...the clip was really hard to install

Sounds like an Arkua or ThermoEngine

The best thing about those Athlon XP days were the screaming 60mm Delta fans :)

pfft noob. I had a thermaltake volcano 7. The gigantic 80mm fan on there kept the whole house awake.

Vantec Tornado ftw. Vacuum cleaner!

And in winter I could swap the cables in the molex to change it to 7v and get some peace and quiet...

Oh I had a Volcano 7 also, still do actually, but neither the Volcano 7 or the Vantac Tornado is quite as classic as the 60mm Delta ;)

Ahhh, the 92mm Vantec Tornado and SLK-900... I remember thinking what a beast that heatsink/fan combo was!

I have my tornado on my desk, oh god that thing is loud as hell haha. Still have a 2400+/KT600 system I boot up sometimes. I'm surprised my roommate in college didn't kill me because of the noise.

When I upgraded to the XP-120 heatsink, I thought I had reached the pinnacle of air cooling

I still have a comp with that setup ;). Athlon xp still is alright with a videocard that does hardware acceleration. Can still use it for everything practically.

Kinda like a modern 1U server with about 12 20mm fans in them ;)

vvvvvVVVVRRRREEEEEEE!!!!1 :D

Found my Volcano 7 box cleaning out the closet last week as well as a Volcano 6+CU. Since this thread started, I've been trying to recall how many 462 boards and CPU's I've owned.

Went into my box of old parts and found thsee...
