Help, I'm lost...:(

I just started a new job with a federal contractor (I'm not a contractor though, I'm a full time employee). We access government systems, which means absolutely NO personal stuff on those computers/network.

So, I need to get a good smartphone. I've pretty much settled on Android, since I can "do what I want" with my device once I've installed a good ROM.

The carrier is AT&T. I was going to get the Captivate, but it doesn't have a camera flash, which for me is essential. So I was going to get the HTC HD2 T9193, which is compatible with AT&T networks and install Froyo on it, but it's $500.00.

What should I do [H]ardforums? Help me, I can't go a day without my [H] fix! :( Help a brother out!

If this is a company phone why do you need a camera flash? The Captivate is the best Android phone on AT&T at the moment. It's either that or an iPhone.

Yeah, now Im curious...what profession is this you speak of where a flash is essential? (again, just curious)

I'd say you're only option (if you're determined to have Android) is to wait for the Acer Liquid Metal phone. Not sure when it'll be out, but it seems it should be out in the next couple months. Not sure if you can hold out until then.

Why is the flash essential?

Damn guys, way to take it out of context!!! :D:D:D:D I didn't mean to say that the JOB is what causes me to need flash! :p

What I meant was that I'd like to have a phone that has a camera light.

he's saying the job requires that the computers are kept spotless and business only, so that's why he needs a smartphone: to tide him over throughout the day.

That being said, the Galaxy S phones are very good, I love my Epic. You can go the unlocked route and get a Desire or Desire HD, or even a Motorola Milestone. I'd probably go the Desire HD route, personally, if flash was 100% essential.

Ok guys. After much research, I'm going to go ahead and get the Captivate, especially after finding an app that substitutes for the fact that the Galaxy S series lacks a physical notification LED (which I REQUIRE).

There's also a mod that uses the backlight on the capacitive touch buttons on the bottom as notification lights. Overall I think it's better.

It's not as easy to install though as it requires a modified kernel. Generally it's rolled into another project (such as the above, it's a custom kernel for Voodoo, which converts the entire phone's file system to EXT4, even the data partition, instead of Samsung's shitty RFS).

Just wanted to post an update.

I did some more research, and ultimately, again, decided not to get the Captivate.

It seems that this phone has random shutdown problems, which seems to plague almost all Samsung phones for some reasons. My brother has a Samsung Eternity and it does the exact same thing to his. If I'm going to commit to another 2 years on contract and pay all that money, I absolutely refuse to have a phone that has such a basic problem.

So, back to the drawing board. I'm pretty much ready to pull the trigger on a HTC HD2 T9193 (Telstra version) which will work on AT&T 3G, and allow me to use both WinMo 6.5 and Android, but the problem is that it's $700.00!!!!

What say you, [H]ardforums?

I ended up biting the bullet and got the Captivate, rooted it, and so far it's great. :)
