I have been looking around and it seems that Acronis seems to be the best option for backup within win 7.

I looked at Ghost 15, and didnt like it much. What do you guys see as the best?

Just looking at some options to look at. :)

I don't know if it's the best, but I've had no issues with Acronis. I'm using the free version you can get from Western Digital's website for making archived backups for the last year.

I've never had any issues backing up my Win7 system to my Ubuntu 10.04 file server using Acronis TrueImage 2010. On the other hand, the built in backup and restore in Windows has given me nothing but problems when trying to accomplish the same task.

I've used Acronis since ever...I make a base image with just updates installed and reformatting takes mear minutes instead of a hour.

You buy Acronis once and they spam you forever. They even phoned me one time to see if I wanted to buy a mulit-user license. Good thing I changed my ISP so they can't spam me anymore. Product is good but you don't need to buy updated versions so ong as you use the boot disk method. The updates really only apply if you make image files from within Windows, which is a no-no, IMO. You want reliable backups so always use the boot cdrom method.

I use clonezilla for anything I want to backup. its free (open source) and very fast. not so pretty on the eyes though, its all text based :)

Acronis is fantastic. The new version allows you convert your backups into virtual discs which can be incredibly handy. It's recovery partition has saved my arse more than a few times.

I hope this isn't just a fan thread... I am not happy with Acronis as of late. The True Image Echo line was pretty good, but the 2010 was riddled with issues until the last build and though I really like the interface of the 2011, I didn't find it very reliable in my testing. If they could iron out the reliability issues it would be great. The last time I tried Norton Ghost (recently) it would not even work correctly for me. O&O DiskImage has been very reliable but the incremental backups take longer than the full. I am not very pleased with the state of backup software in general. Even the built in Windows 7 backup isn't bad but I can't use it on my laptop due to 1 file that is locked and it just craps out there and won't finish. I wish these software companies would get out of the mentality that they have to crank out a new version every year and just put out a good solid product and sit on it for 2 or 3. A slick interface don't mean crap if I can't use the software.

I really like Windows Home Server. I know it's not exactly a program, but it works great.

I've been using Comodo, and it seems to be very good, especially for free.

Well, I have used Acronis, as well as Norton Ghost 15. I didn't care for the Ghost program. I have been looking at software that works well, etc...The Acronis 2011 Home edition seems to have issues where it keeps the machine from rebooting.

I went back to Acronis 2010 because it seemed to simply work. But I have had restore issues sometimes, so I haven't felt confident in that program either. So I have been trying to find alternatives that work well. The free ones seem to not do well. And I hate to pay for something when I am unsure if it will work well.

SO it is not an Acronis fan thread. I am genuinely looking at good alternatives.

Acronis 2010 seems to work for the most part. Restoration has been an issue with most every software I have used. 2011 would tell me that the backup was corrupt, and I couldn't get it to do an incremental or differential to save my life. Ghost would create 1 backup for me and never work again. A lot of people like Macrium Reflect but their activation scheme put me off. Couldn't get the free version to activate. Don't want my backups held hostage over licensing.

O&O DiskImage has never failed me. The only complaint is the looooong time to create a differential. It is currently the product I use on my personal machines. I just do a full backup each time. Takes 90 minutes but always seems to work. I have restored many times without issue. Overall there is no one product I am entirely happy with. But if reliability if the biggest factor (it should be) you may want to give O&O a shot and see if it is for you. If you find something better let me know. ;)

At my work we use norton ghost, It works never had any problems with it, but I don't really like the UI.

Acronis is OK, but I wont be getting any of the newer versions going forward. Expensive yearly updates with no real functionality. I think I will make the switch over to Windows 7 built in backups soon. Acronis did a good job though with imaging my old HDD to my SDD.

I've had issues with Acronis ever since version 9, primarily with the corrupt backup message a previous poster mentioned when trying to restore.

I use Acronis TI 9 to back up and clone XP, Vista, and Windows 7 installations, and recently purchased ATI 2010, but I still don't trust backing up from within Windows, and always back up and restore from a bootable disc.
