AMD Radeon HD 6870 & HD 6850 Video Card Review @ [H]

Something I have yet to find here or anywhere else is where my 4870x2 stands in comparison to these newer cards? I know it is not a dx11 part but seems to run everything that I do just fine. Would a single core 68xx or 69xx series beat it out? Has anyone ever tested this?

No, the 4870x2 is more similar to the 5870 which is higher performance than the 6870. At least when crossfire works so it depends on the games you play.

I saw some canned benchmarks including 4870x2 in a 6870 review earlier today..

Yeah well that card is still a pretty good card and that was four years ago. People who paid for that got their money's worth IMO.
they also paid a crap load for it. I waited till the gtx200 cards got a price reduction and then got a gtx260 for way less than half the price of an 8800gtx a year earlier. I would never pay 400-500 bucks for gpu.

Well, actually I thought Xamedix was talking about the release of the 8800GT which was much better value than the 8800GTX and nearly as fast which annoyed alot of people who bought the 88000GTX. :)

For the record I was referring to the people that bought the 8800GTX as being smart early adopters. You coulda never saw the 8800GT coming at the price point it it did. Even Nvidia said it was unprecedented. But the people that bought the GTX'es have had awesome performance from the start and for a long time after.

This may have been mentioned but im not going to read through 20 pages...

Why are you not comparing apples to apples....i mean the AA settings on the 6870?

I appreciate the review but it honestly gives me no perspective of where the 6870 performs unless if i check another review that has the other cards running AA.

My XFX 6870 is almost here, but I need a good mini Displayport to Displayport adapter, any links around? I did just buy a ten foot Displayport cable, link depot was way nicer than belkins btw. Oh and do you guys think Asus will do a Matrix 6970 anytime soon?

I don't understand the question. There are apples to apples comparisons in the [H] review and whether or not it has AA seems to depend on whether the top card (whichever for that game) could run AA in the previous tests. If none of the cards could run it at a decent framerate then what value would the comparison have been?

The Accell single link active display port or mini display port to dvi adapter is good. Providing your monitor is 1920x1200 or less in resolution. It's around $30. Newegg, Amazon and N C I X should carry it.

One adapter comes with the card, unless you're looking for a second.

The new rep from Directron has links in his post in Hot Deals for Displayport and miniDisplayport adapters.
Good prices too!

Are you sure that is the active dp to dvi adapter and not just the mini dp to dp adapter, or dp to VGA adapter? You need an active adapter for triple DVI monitor gaming. That would be excellent if the vendors are including the active adapters.

It's easy to post great prices when you have nothing in stock... then stall your order for weeks... after charging your card, against the card's vendors agreement not to charge until product is ready to ship.

Sorry, no more Directron for me.

To clarifiy, I need Mini Displayport to Displayport, I can't change the type of wire for my configuration. I need Displayport. My PS3 is using the DVI on my U2311H Display, which leaves only one digital in, the Displayport. So no active adaptors needed. Thanks for the links, I'll check them out. However, I hope you are right World Exclusive, but I think in XFXs case, the wire is not included. Sucks huh.

THAT I believe actually will come with the card- most seem to come with one mini-dp to dp adapter.

arrgghhh Newegg....95% of the time I order from Newegg I opt for an item that offers free shipping and I get it sometimes on the next day with 2 days being tops. I buy a 6870 and pay $7 shipping and it's taking 4 working days. Won't see it till Wednesday. BOO

Yeah, I paid rush shipping, but regular UPS shipping and I won't get mine till Wed either. If they offered USPS Priority mail I would have had it today. Oh well, what are you going to do, but the anticipation is killing me.

Actually, power consumption is more important than core temp. If both cards are at 80C, but one uses 150 W, and the other one 250 W, the latter one will heat the room more.

Another review on the power consumption:

I think the card in my sig is finally ready to move on to the FS/FT forum after seeing all these. Good solid #'s, Gen 1.5-2 DX11 basically, so its polished enough for me, and overall better power.

Win win win?

what the heck is an XFX 4900 1GB?

that looks wrong, the 5830 using more than the 5850? the GTX 460 768 using more than the GTX 460 1GB :p?
I know from earlier reviews that the 5830 can use more power because its clocked higher than the 5850. I am not sure if those 460 cards are clocked the same or not but yeah the 1gb should normally pull a few more watts than a 768mb model.

I got my 6870 but surprisingly i am not seeing much better performance in my system. i had a 4770 i am now wondering if my 500w antec power supply would affect FPS in wow. I would have thought lack of power would cause crashes not sub par performance

What CPU are you using?

how about actually listing ALL your specs? and what res do you play at?

Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8400
4 gigs of ram
play at 1920 -1080
win 7 64 bit

sounds like your core 2 duo *;-)* might be a bit of a bottleneck. Have you tried OCing it? Push it a little and see if that makes a difference.

there is no such thing as a core duo i7 E8400 so I assume you mean E8400 core 2 duo. as Flyinfinni mentioned it could be the cpu holding the card back. what games have you tried out or benchmarked so far?

What games are you playing, I do not believe a 4770 was able to max out all games at that resolution. Can you not increase settings in some games, it may be a cpu limitation but I don't see it myself. I would imagine a 4770 would not be pushing that cpu.

Also try a full driver clean just to be sure and use gpu-z to make sure the card is clocking up correctly.

i was just surprised that my 6870 didnt have a bigger impact on fps. I am talking about wow only in this case havent tried anything else yet

I wish I was wrong, but I'm right. My otherwise awesome XFX 6870, whose sticker art grew on me instantly in person, does not come with any Mini Displayport wires.
