Avast vs AVG vs Microsoft Essentials

W7 firewall in advanced mode is pretty good. You can specifically stop any program or service from accessing the internet. How it compares to Avast I cannot say as I stopped using it before they came out with their package version.

Thanks. I'll be using MSE with W7 firewall and Malwarebytes.

I prefer Avast. I've never formally used MSE but I have friends that say it's good. Avira is a great on to try as well. I've heard too many bad things about AVG. I like Avast since it's interface looks nice. It's very light on resources as well (using only 10mb or RAM right now). With everything we know, I think it's safe to say you don't need to pay for an antivirus anymore.

EDIT: Whatever you run, run malwarebytes on top of it. malwarebytes is the best :)

avast user here with no complaints. I have it running on my older laptop and my newer desktop, performs updates automatically and I got it setup to scan at a set time every day. As for system hogging, I really like the fact that I can put it in "Silent/Gaming mode" when I want to load up a game and play for a little while then turn it back onto full when I am done.

Avira, Avast or MSE, all are very close. I don't think there's any hands down "best" among them at the present time. It's up to personal preference at this point. Which is why when people say "such and such is the best among the free AV solutions" it's annoying because they're all neck and neck. Being a fan of a certain company's software doesn't make it the best.

As for Avast, version 5 is an improvement over 4.8. I don't run older versions of AV software so whatever 4.8 did in 2009 doesn't concern me now. This goes for any AV program. I care how Avast 5 performs this year with detection rates and how it will perform in the future. Avira has always had a high detection rate but a high false positive rate and annoying advertising. MSE has a high detection rate but is a bit heavy on resources and is a slow scanner. Avast 5 has inline ads for their pro version and you have to renew your registration every year. It's up to what bothers you the least out of the three and what matters to you most..i.e detection rates, performance, whatever..etc...Everybody has their likes and dislikes.

Edit: Just had to address this comment in particular because I find it comical because I recall you always posting threads about the new reports and there were some good discussions.
. But don't call me a retard on top of it.
.

Those threads I posted are neutral threads, the topic is new comparisons that come out, I usually list the top several winners in neutral and correct over, and I post them in the security forum which is the relevant forum. Security...antivirus...there's a relevance there of proper subject matter.

And as you may (or more likely may not) notice, all your little time spent trying to find posts resulted in posts which were mostly end of last year and pertaining to new testing methods that AV-C was coming up with in prep for the Dynamics test, after MSE came out, culminating in the Dynamics test, with 1 whole link in 2010.

And, oh, I will, every day if I feel like it, so sit down and and take it if you're going to act like dog crap on the bottom of someones shoe. You opened this up..can't stand the heat, then stay the flying fu$& out of my kitchen. Instead of acting like an annoying chihuahua dog just go run around the corner and hide.

Microsoft Security Essentials. Avast and AVG are good also. Avast has free version.

No, AVG is not good also. Maybe you meant Avira.

But anyway, guys, what would you recommend for an old P4 w/ only 256MB of RAM? I'm not willing to spend even $.01 on this computer since it's going to someone else. And I'm not going to be this person's tech support so it can't be something that expires yearly. MSE is too slow.

I found Avira to be easy on older hardware. The only real downside is the greater frequency of false detections. With some searching, you can find a way to remove the pop-up at every startup.

Ideally Avast would be the best choice but if you think the person getting the computer is too lazy to click something once a year to re-register....

Panda Cloud. The only other choice IMHO would be ClamAV and there's no way I'd recommend Clam over Panda.
I used PC for awhile, it's a very good, very light AV. I just liked MSE more. ;)

Guinness for mental weakness, you're a babbling mess talking in circles.

Again, I was referring to detection rates in my posts.

Oh, neutral threads, new testing methods, give me a f'n break..... There's one test labeled dynamic test....period. I proved you're full of shit, deal with it.

Once again, all I care about, and I've stated this numerous times, the Dynamics tests that AV-Comparatives does. That's done on a yearly basis...thus, retard, the reason I've haven't posted it since December of last year, and will not until it's complete December of...//drum roll.....THIS YEAR. Grasp that yet?

Move on, I can't believe you're this IT kingpin you try to make yourself out to be and you come into a thread shooting your mouth off name calling, posting in caps, etc..You're a joke to me at this point regardless of what you know and how many times you post in the networking forum.

I actually think that detection rates are more important for my own machine because I know that a virus has a lower chance to get on my computer in the first place.

I'd rather a virus not get in than be able to clean it better.

But if you have to install an AV on someone else's computer to fix it then cleaning capability is more important.

I like mse, for me it seems to integrate the best with the os, in win 7 windows updates will even update the definitions.

Just walked my brother through cleaning up a system that was "protected" with AVG. MalwareBytes detected over 800 entries. Last week, I cleaned up his wifes computer which was "protected" with AVG. They are all now using MSE.

This. It's kinda weird that noone is bashing MS anymore since windows 7...
