Starting October 18th, you will soon be in bliss with your PS3 and streaming movies with your PS3 through Netflix. Get ready for 1080P streaming with Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio pending your connection can handle the speed demands.

Hard Frontpage reports on this one.

*flies hard at this news*

Edit: Didn't see the news on the front page so I updated link.

Catching up the 360, nice. I think the only reason they had a disc based application was because MS had a 12 month exclusive deal with an application (installed) based version of Netflix.

I use Netflix (on my 360) and its fucking awesome. Hopefully some PS3 gamers give it a go, I'm about to cancel my cable TV.

I did the same thing a month after starting Netflix LOL...

I never looked back either.

Here I thought I was the only one who had canceled cable because of my console.

I love Netflix and PlayOn for entertainment value. Netflix streaming has some nice content. I'd really like them to make a rule of some form to make all TV series/shows available on instant watch. I know it isn't up to Netflix, but I am going through Mad Men right now and i wish I wasn't having to do the disc swap.

I'm still not ready to kill off my cable yet (I finally have pretty much every channel in HD), but I can see that day coming in the not so distant future with things like this.
The lack of HD picture and surround sound was one of the few things really holding Netflix streaming movies back.

Streaming Netflix is OK but the variety is lacking. They do rotate movies but why not just let people do a search, rather than locking them into a limited pool?

If you add a movie to your que, and they remove it from the list, you can still watch it. So the data is still there.

When I moved I brought my PS3 but the cable company stayed. I see no reason for cable in my particular situation. Now that the diskless option is here, I am coming closer to being set. I was tired of the PS3 disk wearing out and I always had 2 on standby.

This is just me but I never really watched that much cable in the first place. I am pretty much a documentary hog and am going to go back and catch up on my favorites like Scrubs. And they are changing up the interface as well. I typically would make my queue on the computer or laptop right in front of the tv in the living room but this may be a little better to choose on the fly.

Yeah but I am betting the fall 360 update in November will update the application and allow this as well.

You always want to add stuff from the PC and then move over to the console, just selecting off of the suggested list would be kind of meh. Of course a built in search on the console would be nice too.

I didn't really mind having to swap discs, but discless is a welcome addition nevertheless.
I started using Netflix on the 360 on day 1, and switched over for PS3 as soon as it was offered. The PS3 has become my Netflix device of choice, and there is no shortage of great content for me. The service has really improved since launch. I have probably 400 movies/TV shows in my queue and plenty of stuff that I haven't even added yet. Today is my last day of cable TV - I would have cancelled a long time ago if I wasn't such a baseball fanatic. Unfortunately MLB.TV blacks out my Braves games...

If you took the sum of what they've had available at all times and let you pick, there would be more than you could ever watch.

Why they shuffle the content then limit you down to only part of the total catalog is beyond me.

Awesome. My only gripe so far is not enough HD content on Netflix for PS3, the disc requirement and just the general rate in which they get (good) new content.

I'm scratching my head over here trying to figure out why some of you are wanting to cancel cable or already have because of netflix. I cancelled my netflix. It's all very old content. It's good for some tv series you may have missed, but you can watch most, if not all on the internet anyway. Not sure of the legality of downling tv torrents, but it's out there.

Cable is too expensive for the minute interest I have in the programming. I don't want to pay for 700, 400 or even 100 channels plus HD when I only watch four channels. I really only care to watch baseball, so no need for cable from November-March. I catch up on TV shows with Netflix because my couch/recliner is more comfortable than my desk chair.
New content is great, but I love the old content - even being a film buff I've missed out on an unbelievable amount of movies. Another incentive is that having catalog movies saves me a trip to my DVD shelves, as I can load up those movies via Netflix instead.

Wish i could kill my cable but no netflix in CR and the cable company makes you pay for basic cable if you have cable internet!

I have Netflix, and enjoy it, but I would never cancel my cable and go solely with Netflix.

If i didnt have a 2 year old, and needed access to all the young child programming id prolly cancel my satellite at this point.

Maybe in a couple more years.

This...I've always thought cable was a waste of money. It's difficult to get DirectTV where I live due to the mountainous terrain, so we are basically stuck with our cable company. I don't have much interest in network programming on the limited nights I'm home (work second shift) and things like news/weather I just end up hearing on the radio on my way to/from work.

Netflix fulfills my limited TV interest outside of football season just fine, with only a few exceptions.

I have a three and half year old and for us there is plenty of educational stuff on the queue and entertainment as well when she is good.

I will second the sentiment on the cost. I can afford $80-$100 a month for cable but I could also afford a BMW, but that doesn't mean I drive one. My family just isn't big TV watchers so this is pretty much the perfect solution for us right now along side of OTA HD broadcasts for local and national news (if you can call that national news anyway).

The PS3 version has a Search Function already...... Just go up to the tabs and from Instant Queue, scroll to the left once and it brings you to a search function where you can search by movie name (sorry, no search by actor).

This is great, wife and I use Netflix about 100% of the time (we dropped cable after we got netflix). Would be nice to not have a disk anymore in the system all the time.

I noticed this lately also, Netflix has been getting worse on the watch it now front which is sad. I would rather see them go with MORE online content and maybe even an online only service. If they could start putting new stuff online quickly and keep it there forever, I think it would be awesome.

The only real problem I noticed is that ridiculous agreement to not release new movies until a month after they hit DVD (or something).

I know on the Windows Media Center version of Netflix they selection has shrunk even more than the consoles…but as always you can search for any movies that were on the streaming list before and 9/10 times you can still play it.
I still watch a fair amount of non-network TV, so I’m not ready to give up on cable yet. If anything, I’ve actually been really impressed with Comcast’s new streaming service. They have shows online almost immediately and the quality is good. If they had an online-only package, I’d actually go in that direction instead. Torrenting of TV is still quite the menace for them I’m sure, though. In some cases you can grab an HD version of a 30 minute TV show in 2-3 minutes. That’s faster than using On-Demand and sitting through Comcast’s commercials.

The problem is that it's widespread enough to show up in the top results for Google and it's easier to do than using a lot of cable front-ends.
Cable companies and streaming services are having to compete with Torrents just like iTunes does.

tv downloading being illegal is a little grey area to me. Is it illegal for me to tape/record a tv show? Is it then also illegal for me to give a copy of that content to a friend to watch? If the answer to both of those questions is no, how come its illegal to download a copy of a tv show?

Movies etc are different because you pay for individual rights to that content, tv is basically "free" for big network stuff to begin with. HBO, etc is also a little different, I see that stuff as more like movies, since you have to pay extra to get that content, more like movie rights.

Just some out loud thinking about content rights.

correct but it was a case of Netflix giving in on the DVD mail order to get it back on the streaming side. For example, Netflix and Warner Bros. agreed to expand their licensing arrangement for streaming movies back in January, and Netflix has licensing rights to more of the studio's catalog content. In exchange, Netflix agreed to do not offer new releases from the studio on DVD or Blu-ray discs until 28 days after they go on sale. Old news I know and it sucks but I think Netflix wants to do whatever it takes to offer as much as they can by way of streaming. Naturally its a great selling point for folks still mulling that $9/mo price tag and re-solidifies their existing customer base

So that's why it prompted me to re-authorize my box last night.. Cut into my Psych time.

I never really followed it, but you're saying that restriction was only limited to DVD and Blu-ray? Interesting.

Yeah I don't have cable/satellite. There isn't much on TV I care for and what I do I can watch it online one way or another.

Downloaded it when I got home tonight and tried it. They revamped the menu and look and now have the movies in 2 columns instead of one. Maybe it was just me but it seemed a tad faster. Running off the hard drive it would be. I like it so far. Picture quality and sound were great. Did not try a movie yet. Tried an episode of xfiles and then a documentary on Moog synthesizers. Yes, I am a geek. I like it.

The start up for me was annoying slow like the disk version but once it loads and establishes a connections, it is much faster than previous. We are talking 1/10 th time in most cases when just wanting to hop into your selection. The layout will take some getting used to. I have already selected and hopped out of menus when I wasn't wanting to.

Interesting, I've seen this reported more then once on different forums. I've also read claims of certains titles only being SD for PC and HD for the consoles via Netflix streaming
