how long does an i7 920 oc at 4.0ghz last?

Is this a serious question? At what voltage? The answer is...longer than you need to worry about.

When the chip reaches 4 years, 10 months, 3 weeks, 11 days, 5 hours, 23 minutes, and 32 seconds stand clear. :D

all i can say is that i have a q6600 b3 that has been running at 3.2 or higher since 2007. i think you will be ready to replace it before it dies.

Because it's gonna BLOW! :D To the OP, I have been running an i7 860 @ 4.1ghz with 1.35v for over a year now and it still thumps like it did the first day I set it up. Before that, like tricky0502, I had a Q6600 that ran for almost 3 years @ 3.8ghz with 1.42v on it. You're probably alright for a while.

This is utter bullshit, its 4 years, 8 months, 3 weeks, 11 days, 4 hours, 22mins and 13 seconds. You should really learn to not go around giving out bad info, you could really get someone killed.

In all truth though, I would be willing to bet the mobo will be the weak point before the CPU. I have seen far older chips (P4 etc) that have been running with high OC's run just fine still today. I have seen some lose a REALLY high OC over a few years, but often was able to get that OC back in a new board. So my guess on the how long you can keep a given OC will depend on the mobo and how well it holds up to OCing.

This ^^^^^

Also is your question about how long the cpu will actually last at a given overclock speed, voltage?

Or do you mean the performance of the cpu and will it hold up at 4Ghz in the years to come?

It would be nice to have a mttf function dependant on voltage to see how it actually affects the life of the CPU.

I think the problem with that is creating such a study would take years and by the time you got a good estimate the chips would be obsolete..

OMG I JUST KILLED MY CHIP IT'S ONLY 9 MONTHS OLD I WAS ONLY RUNNING 1.8V ON IT WTF THIS IS BULLSHIT

It will last forever if you never turn off your computer. Just like hard drives, turning it on and off totally wears them out..like, faster. I heard that once.

I lol'd.

That's actually bull, because hard drives turn themselves off when not in use anyways. :p

Some of you guys should be on the comedy channel....so funny, id apply if your out of work in this lovely economy...
cpu has a 3yr warrantee ,if it last that long then you good till God knows when...
ive never run a cpu for longer than 2yrs...O/clocked the hell out of some, never killed one yet...trick is keep it cool..computers hate heat....

I'm yet to see a story about overclocking killing an i7 (outside of suicide runs of course :))

My 920 lasted 18mo at 3.85ghz/1.45(?)V before it began having stability issues. I dropped it down to stock and it continued running stably for several months before the mobo croaked on me.

Edit: I had the CPU at 100% load the entire time.

What stepping is your 920? Seems like a really high Vcore.

Waz up Trey. You're doing it wrong, you are supposed to make fun of the OP question. :)

Mine is been running over 1 year and still strong, although i'm under water and temps never go above 65C. Voltage is 1.275v

It will last a long time, but you cant get a guaranteed time frame. Electronics dont have expiration dates. They die when they die. One i7 920 may last you 7 years while another last 20 years and another may last 5 minutes.

Bought my Ci7 920 the first few weeks they were released....I think two years this December.

I've run the CPU at 1.4 VCore and just over 4.1GHz since I bought it. No problems.
