ati overdrive causing tearing with dual monitors

i have a 5850. i just set up my second monitor, and now whenever i load a page that has a flash video or close the page (youtube videos etc) the screen tears. after some searching i found out it has to do with ati overdrive, and it happens whenever the video card's memory clock speed gets changed, which i'd been able to observe and confirm as true. is there some way to tell overdrive to never change the memory speed? i tried poking around but couldn't figure it out. i leave my computer on all the time so i'd like to be able to leave overdrive on for the power saving / automatic underclocking when it's not really being used.

Exact same setup. Added second monitor to my 5850, Get strange stuttering in WOW, other games fine. Weird stuff like you explained.

The card is great but quirky. My 4870 was less trouble. I have both and am debating putting the 4870 back

I get the samething on my 5870,

you can enable ati overdrive

create a profile CCC

go into your users\appdata\ATI\ace and edit the profile in notepad or wordpad

there 3 settings for the core clock and memory clock

i changed all my memory clocks to be 1200000 on all three.

to eliminate the tearing with flash, i disabled hardware acceleration.

to do that right click on the flash video and uncheck hardware acceleration.

keep in mind 120000 may not be right for the 5850, thats the stock clock for the memory on the 5870.

Hope that helps, it took me an entire weekend to finally get rid of most the flicker and tearing.

Dont take this the wrong way but why are you using overdrive. Why not overclock your card to a stable and static clock speed on gpu/mem etc..

Is there a benefit to running overdrive over a regular overclock?

Also why not get [H]ardkore and create a custom bios for your 5850/5870 with custom clocks/voltages/fanspeed etc..

I mean it's what I have done for years. Just seeing if there is something I'm missing.

overdrive is ATI's internal overclocking tool..

far better choice is to use MSI afterburner and create a 2D profile and then your 3D profile(overclock for gaming).. most people have found running 400/900 clocks fix the problem but at least in MSI AB you can mess with the clocks til you find the perfect setting that you like when on your desktop/web browsing..

also static overclocking on ATI is a thing of the past unlike nvidia which hasnt changed in almost 5 years.. with ATI even with an overclock you can still take advantage of the 2D clock modes to save power..

running overdrive is fine, if you're not overclocking you still get screen flicker when the memory clocks change. Without overdrive enabled the profiles made in CCC won't work if you edit the core or memory clock speeds.

I use Overdrive, I dont overclock i keep them at stock speeds to get rid of the annoying screen flicker.

i haven't disabled overdrive since i leave my computer on all the time so i figure the throttling down of the core speed would be good for saving power / less heat when it's not being used for gaming. i'll try editing the ccc profile first, i'll look into the msi ab if that doesnt work. it's currently at 400/900 normally anyways, but switches to 400/1000 when i open a page with a video, then switches back when i close it, tearing each time.

throttling down the core is fine, i found the tearing happens when the memory clock changes. If you disable hardware acceleration in flash it wont change any of the clock speeds and you won't see any flicker or tearing.

this worked! thanks!

i was trying the ccc profile one, i'd changed all three memory speed settings to the same (100000 for 5850), but it was still changing it even though as far as i could tell i'd activated the profile *confused*

but simply disabling hardware acceleration in flash makes it so the clock speed no longer changes!

I'm glad that worked, it took me three days to get it working right. From trying different drivers, different monitors, and different cables in different ports.
