Vibrant GPS fix on Kies

Yeah, Samsung said that about the JH7 firmware update for the Captivate too, then a different rep said, "JUST KIDDING, THAT WAS THE ONLY UPDATE YOU'RE GETTING UNTIL 2.2." Likewise, AT&T reps and Samsung reps have been back and forth about whether this is:
A) A GPS fix of any sort
B) The "real" GPS fix
C) The only update until 2.2
D) An "official" update.

It's a shame you Vibrant people are getting the runaround too.

Speaking as a Fascinate owner I think I can fairly say the entire Galaxy S family is feeling the frustration with the apparent bugs and apparent lack of speediness deploying updates and solutions. As for 2.2 Froyo, it's on my Santa list at this point

Well, I know 2.2 is coming VERY soon for the Epic, but yeah... Hardware-wise, these phones are absolutely fantastic. I'd much rather have the Fascinate/Captivate form factor instead of my Epic, but I won't complain since the phone was free. Looking at the Samsung Transform, I might just get my wish after all. Software wise, well, I'm waiting for the Cyanogenmod release from Noobnl. Samsung seems to be continuing their craptacular reputation for smartphone software, despite the many promises.

Although the GPS is a non issue on my vibrant, and I'm lucky it is. I received the phone from my girlfriend and roommate for a birthday present, they paid out right for it.

I use Google maps almost daily because of traffic jams and what not.on the highway I'd rather not.sit in traffic I'd rather drive through the suburbs. My GPS lock time is about 20 seconds so I can't complain. I just turn it on right before I open maps and all is good.

Well, I know 2.2 is coming VERY soon for the Epic,

Everyone's been saying that about their particular model of Galaxy S for quite some time now. There is no reason to believe that the Epic will be getting it any sooner than any other model, and there is no reason to believe that it'll be coming soon.

The least worst news we got is from some post from the SPAIN branch of Samsung stating that the i9000 will be getting 2.2 late October. Considering the last estimate from EU Samsung was September for the i9000 and that has come and gone, I don't put a whole lot of stock in October either.

There's also no reason to believe that any US model will get 2.2 before the i9000, considering the i9000 is their baseline model, was released prior to all US models, and has gotten all minor updates prior to any US model.

What's hilarious is I was bashed huge for bringing this up, and recommending the EVO over the Galaxy S phones.

I realize that the hardware is better on the Samsung phones, but Samsung support has always been about as bad as it gets. I know that many were hoping for some changes with this line of phones, but honestly, I didn't see any reason for Samsung to change.

Personally, I'm glad I stuck with the EVO and HTC. At least with HTC hardware, you get decent support, and even when you do not, you have a ton of options from the XDA community.

Yeah I would've preferred an HTC phone but I'm on a grandfathered AT&T family plan. The EVO community on XDA seems to be the most successful. Some of the mods I use on my phone are even from them (like replacing the useless AT&T battery icon).

There's no reason the Epic should be updated to 2.2 before any other SGS phone but considering the Vibrant hasn't seen a single official update I wouldn't put it past Sammy to update one phone at a time.

If I don't have 2.2 before November ends I'm probably going to look for a new phone. Samsung is absolutely dropping the ball here.

I bought my Captivate on launch day and knew from day one that 2.2 wasn't expected until October at the earliest, possibly November. Nothing for me to be angry about yet.

if they can fix the issues by the end of november when my upgrade comes around then I'm going with the epic. if they cant then it will be the evo. or I'll just hold off and see what else sprint has coming down the pipe

Well, considering my Samsung contacts have been telling me mid to late October since before the phone was released, and I know it's in the beta stages with Sprint right now, I'm quite confident it will be released soon. Before any other model? Never said that at all. Just that the Epic was coming soon.

My biggest problem with this phone is the GPS as I use it daily with Runkeeper. The track is all over the place and I only lock on to 1 or 2 satellites with GPS Test. Driving to Dallas, TX back in August on a clear night, there were numerous times I lost GPS signal when using Google Navigation. I've become very accustomed to using the GPS on a daily basis and given the fact that it barely works, is driving me crazy.

The best thing T-Mobile can do right now are to release the much needed fixes for this phone and 2.2 at the same time. Its ridiculous given the amount of time it has taken Samsung and T-Mobile to get this phone fixed.

I would have to agree with you here. Look at Behold 2 on Tmobile. It had amazing camera and screen for the time being, but the phone sucked big time. No promised updates, very very slow Android due to their Touch Wiz. I thought it would change with the Galaxy S, and it sort of did. But, even my Vibrant had a ton of issues with GPS, some lag issues, reception issues. All the promised 2.2 didn't come in September, now who knøws when. Ended up selling my phone, sad really because I loved the way it was, aside from feeling kind of cheap. Anyways, I've come to realize that no matter how good the hardware, software has to follow. I would have much rather kept my Nexus One if I knew how this phone was going to be, just too many issues and not enough solutions.

I did the same thing as you man. I was coming from a Nexus One thinking that the Vibrant would be an upgrade but boy what a downgrade. The GPS problem drove me crazy and the lag issue put me over the edge. I sold the phone after a month of usage and now I couldn't be happier with a G2.

I would believe you if I hadn't owned an Eris.

And we're already getting some nice options for the Fascinate and other Galaxy S variants. There's a 1.2GHz overclock mod out, a clockwork mod, an Odin complete backup file you can restore to factory from, a quick root option, and tons of other goodies over on XDA. And that's just for the Fascinate, the last one to be released. The previously released Galaxy S phones such as the Captivate have even more fun stuff out for them.

The EVO development community at XDA destroys the Captivate's. Most of the mods on the captivate (like replacing the battery icon) originally come from the EVO community. Everything we have, they have too, plus a lot more.

The Evo and Incredible have also gotten official updates far, far faster than us. Faster than even Motorola devices.

The EVO and Incredible have been out a lot longer than the Captivate, so of course they have a more developed community and more updates.

I like my Captivate, but Samsung's support, follow-through & community ecosystem are nothing compared to HTC's. HTC does such a better job. I only got my Captivate because it was the first AT&T Android super-phone and there was no HTC on the horizon.

lol @ came from the EVO community. Thanks for the laugh.

Got the OTA update this morning and installed it. Phone is now bricked.

All I did was root and remove the Samsung bloatware, which may have been the cause.

No OTA yet...hopefully soon. The update from Kies I posted causes some major lag in Gallery and Pandora and I can't get email over wifi.

Did you unroot before doing the OTA update?

No, they didn't come from EVO. Everything originated from devices such as G1. Everything was just ports basically. Nexus one has a huge dev community, even bigger than EVO's. Alot of what Evo has is a port from there.

No ota here. I have lagfix, root, and superuser. Am I going to have to uninstall all of this stuff before I accept the ota?

From what I've heard, so long that you don't use a custom kernel, it should prompt you for an OTA. There's an Odin flashable JI6 out on xda though, might as well just grab that instead.
