Minecraft

I'm surprised people are having performance issues...

My specs are nothing spectacular: Q6600 default clock, 4gb of ram, and a 8800
But I've only had it hicup while running 7zip on a couple large files in the background... Other than that it runs fine.

Sure, it runs fine for me too, but people are saying for what it is it's more hardware intensive than you'd expect.

My wife's laptop struggled with it, and even when I set the graphics settings to 'Fast', it still struggled a LITTLE bit.

You are joking right? Your system is still in what I would consider the top range of high end computers. By no means the newest or best hardware but compared to the general population it is up there.

My older core 2 duo /GTX 460 has moments where its lags and its a cube world yet I can go into Just for Cause 2 and play almost at max with no issues. Its just poor optimization of the game in Java.

Welp, I officially just dug to China. I was burrowing at the bottom of the map, and while emptying out the floor, found 3 blocks that went down, and I dug through the damn floor into oblivion.... lol.

Yeah, on my two pc's I've tried it on (one in sig, and a [email protected] w GT-220) the game runs great, only hiccups slightly when loading the map at start of play.

But over the weekend I was hanging at my parent’s house - tried to show the game off to some of my siblings, and the game was completely un-playable on all 3 machines we tried. Couple older P4 machines w/ Intel graphics and a newer netbook - lol. Since the game ran fine on my rigs and looks so old-school at first glance, it never occurred to me the game couldn't run at all even on lower settings on an older PC.

:D Awesome! Looking forward to the moment when my giant spiral mine-shaft finally hits the bottom and I can quit digging this monstrous thing - it's taking forever! And I still have yet to find my first diamond in the game.

It probably has to do with the amound of RAM in the system. When the worlds get very large, they take up a good amount of memory, especially in multiplayer with 10-20 people.

Might want to try turning the view distance to normal instead of far.

Yea, I've played with it, but thats cheating ;).

Also, BIG Update coming: http://minecraft.net/boo/

I hope he delivers as I'm guessing this means no updates until 10/31. If he does, it'll be great.

how do save games work/mods/ between java or offline exe versions?

dieing torch is incredible and will add a lot to the experience. Right now im in a creative phase , soon i will go back carve the depth of earth.

They better at least leave embers that you can see in the dark, but produce no light radius.
Also, holdable torches should have been implemented forever ago. I hope we get them soon.

Haloween update looks awesome! Except for the dying torches, which sound like a pain, 'cause that means I gotta re-do all my lighting. But the lanterns will be a nice addition.

And +1 for portable light! Game needs it bad!

There doesn't appear to be any intelligent culling of blocks, I tried the free singleplayer, used a massive map, built a small house on a hill and went inside and the frame rate was still awful, so it's clearly not culling out blocks you can't see, or at least not doing a very good job of it.

it's not in the free version, it draws everything there.

culling works in the paid version.

If the performance is RAM limited, I might have a potential fix. Since java runs in a VM, its VM instantiation usually (always?) has a max allowed accessible memory. I know there's some command-line settings you can set for Sun/Oracle JVM to increase the accessible memory. Maybe this would in turn allow better performace? Just a thought.

It's true my system is fine hardware-wise but I thought it was note posting because some of the people with performance issues were a generation ahead.

Also I can't wait for the Halloween update - mostly because of the supposed multiplayer fixes, as long as I can run around building with friends while actually having to worry about monster attacks, I will be ecstatic.

Oh boy, those updates look interesting. The torch thing means I am so screwed as the current number of active torches in my save are astronomical. Reclaiming and reusing items seems like it will be much more important from a resource standpoint. Hopefully lanterns will have a slight greater radius too.

Highly dislike the torch dieing idea, you need way too many torches to keep the bastards from spawning inside your home base. I wouldn't doubt I have 50 torches on each floor of the structure I built and it's probably got 8 floor at the moment. I built it up to the sky first and now Im going downward with it. It's really awesome looking at night from the outside but it's hard not to get dead while you look at it.

Im in the process of building a mine cart track that runs down the side of it and figure out how to make it switchable so I can come off the top of my base and mine cart to the bottom in the direction I want to go. And I am slowly working the water sources into jump off depths and close enough that you can't screw it up. Although it's getting pretty tedious when the creepers blow up something critical and make it impossible for me to get back to my stuff. Like catch me on an entrance ramp and blow it away so I gotta find blocks to build steps to get my stuff.

I found some diamonds on the first day of play, lost those when I fell off this pillar I built trying to find the maximum height....I have no idea how I lost them because I found nearly everything else. I have noticed I randomly get things back when I die again..like new items I wasn't carrying when I died pop up in my inventory upon retrieval.

Gonna take some screenshots of stuff when I get the mine cart finished and more of my floors polished off. I still have floaters in the middle of my base where I can't reach them because I haven't built the middle of my floors out with glass yet. Otherwise it's near pitch black inside, and that's missing an entire wall where I left it open to extend it if it seemed necessary to fit something important in.

Torches already placed before the update are supposed to be converted to lanterns when the update hits so you won't have to worry about re-lighting those.

I read on the official forums that torches already in place will stay lit.
Oh...sorry didnt see the above post.

Hell, then I'm gonna place a couple thousand torches just in case the new lanterns require iron. Be better to have a bunch farmed and saved than to have to waste iron on it.

Well that's good about the torches, because iron is kind of a pain since it's used in so much stuff. Gotta carry a backpack full of stone tools if you want to get anything done and not have to run back in 20 minutes.

Hell I've even had some pretty significant shortages of coal where I can't find any on 2 or 3 outings and burn right through what I had saved

Anyone have any useful tips for mine carts? I built the track but it seems like something that is more for straight line with very slight declines if you want to use it for hauling or moving distances. Otherwise it's more like a really short rollercoaster ride you have to carry or push back to the top. Thinking I might need to find a good spot for another base and connect them via 2 air tracks that slope from a higher floor to a lower floor on the other so you just have to climb back to the top of one to ride back to the other. Or does a fueled minecart somehow allow you to push a cart you're riding back up a hill? Didn't have enough mats once I was done to try to build a fueled cart or a cargo cart.

powered minecarts dont push players up hill very well at all, it is very slow, even with 3 powered minecarts behind you unfortunately.

Got some screen caps of my spiral mine-shaft in progress - it's looking pretty cool so far. Decided once it hits the bedrock and I finish up the bottom area, I'm going to carve a gap all around the outside block and have lava running all the way down. :D

Here's my first ever attempt at working with lava - I added a lava-falls and moat to my spawn tower. You can also see part of the castle complex and the top of the spiral stairs in the lower-right.

Very nice work Madfive!

how much time did it take you to make this?

Just bougth miencraft a few days ago. Been playing survival. How do you kill spawn points? can you whack them to death?

And is there any [H] Survival MP server?

I assume you mean the mob spawn cages? You can't destroy them, but if you put a torch on each side they will cease spawning mobs.

Most people setup a suicide machine that will pull the mobs into it as they spawn and deposit their drops in a safe place to gather. I had one with skeletons and a lava ceiling that they'd end up hitting, die, and their arrows etc would flow along the water underneath to a collection point.

You can destroy it, but it takes a good bit of whacking. It's not necessary if you've got the room lit though, especially if you want to farm the mobs later.

Thanks! I been playing less than a week, and probably somewhere between 24-30 hours in-game so far. I'm totally addicted - can you tell. :p
