Microsoft has filed a lawsuit against Motorola today claiming that the phone maker is infringing on nine patents.

Microsoft both sued Motorola in U.S. District Court in Washington and brought a complaint before the International Trade Commission. Microsoft alleges Motorola infringes on nine Microsoft patents related to key smartphone experiences such as syncing e-mail, calendar, and contacts, and notifying applications about changes in signal strength and battery power, Microsoft said.

Wouldn't this be an issue with Google's platform rather than Motorola's Android phones??

Well that explains why Motorola isn't working on any Windows Phones or are they being sued (indirectly) because they aren't making any Windows Phones.

yeah.....i cant tell...its a software company, suing a hardware company, for features that only work with a third party's software and not exclusively to that point.....sounds like MS has a very specific reason for going after Motorola instead of going after Google

next they will file the same patent infringement against Samsung, HTC, and LG for the same exact thing, since they all run Android and all perform the same functions listed, via Android........

sounds to me like they are trying to strong arm Google Inc. indirectly by going after their partners

I doubt they will sue HTC, Samsung or LG since they are partnering up for Windows Phone.

I do see this as a possible ploy to get Motorola to make Windows 7 Phones or at least Motorola making Windows 7 Phones if Microsoft is successful in this case.

This sounds like a bad idea for a patent troll by MS. Motorola might decide to retaliate against them with the massive amount of patents they themselves hold, this could be amusing to say the least.

Out of the 8 violations claimed, only three look to have any validity, and two of those you can show prior art for.

Guess which one looks valid and MS owns the prior art? FAT support.

One of them was as lame as putting the word "mobile" in place of "workstation" for doing meeting requests... something Unix workstations have been doing for years. One was for managing PIMs.

This is purely a harassment suit. If I'm Motorola (and Google) I'd fight....

BTW, queue Richard Stahlman piping up in 4....3....2....1.....

Microsoft: We will drop it if you make a (good) Windows Phone.

Two weeks later the case is dropped.

Motorola Windows Phone pops up several weeks later.

Kind of ironic but Microsoft has been making money on Linux for quite a while, especially on phones.

Its impossible, they are already said they are getting rid of features like multi-tasking,copy/paste, and USB tethering on Win7mobile ......you can't make a good phone under those conditions. Not something that would be considered a modern smart phone at least.

Source? I would like to read about that, actually.

anybody else thinking it's more likely that Palm, Nokia, RIM, Sony Ericsson, LG, AT&T, or even Motorola themselves all have prior art on all of the patents Microsoft listed in the lawsuit?

I was under the impression built in tethering was a built in feature of windows 7 mobile?

Microsoft has probably way more cash than Motorola. Even if they lose, they won't care.

They also racket Amazon for using Linux.

i don't want another windows phone, not after reading what it is not having

I mean nothings final yet obviously, but I would be pretty surprised if they left out some of what has become the most basic features of a smart phone. I could live with out copy/paste on the first iphone, but with the Android (and newer iphone OS's) supporting it, now that I have tasted it it would suck to not have it.

Windows Phone 7 is shaping up to be more memorable for the features that it lacks rather than what new functionality that it brings to the table. The latest feature to be dropped from Windows Phone 7's spec sheet is tethering.

Some sites were reporting earlier in the week that the mobile operating system would support tethering due to comments made by Brandon Watson, Director of Windows Phone 7. However, a Microsoft spokesman contacted Boy Genius Report today to state that Watson was mistaken and that “Windows Phone 7 does not support tethering."

Microsoft's next generation mobile operating system, which recently went RTM, also lacks copy/paste and third-party multitasking. Both were features that Apple was long criticized for when the original iPhone launched in 2007. It wasn't until 2009 that the iPhone received copy/paste functionality, while full multitasking and tethering (in the U.S.) didn't show up until this year.

As far as I know tethering will geared towards the wireless market and not USB. This is something an application possibly released by the carrier/manufacturer can add and they might not bother with a wireless tether either for the same reason. (This shadows Android selling points, get the Core OS and functionality down and covered and let the carriers and manufacturers take care of the side functionality).

Cut/Past will come but will not be included originally. Don't know whats so hard about but everyone else has had trouble with this, but it wasn't worth them holding back the initial launch to get it. Don't know if they are right, but I doubt its a deal-breaker.

Multi-tasking is going to go the same route as iOS. They need a good image and the best image is gained from a fast system, multitasking can make the OS look bad. My guess is it will be available in a later release on machines sporting at least a 1GHz x2 chip.
