PS3 3D Blu-ray Playback Loses Lossless Audio

To squeeze out bandwith for its already failed 3D update , thats just dumb. Other than games why the hell would you want to view a 3D Blu-Ray on a half ass player ? Lossless audio is one of the best perks of Blu-Rays. Once you hear it or enough of it you can spot the difference in a heart beat.

The ps3 does not actually bitstream listless audio. all you get from bitstreaming is dd - dts. the only way to get true 7.1 and the like is to use lpcm. want to check? choose either option and hit select and it will show you in the upper right corner what type its using. using bitstream I've only ever seen 5.1. only way I can get it to display 7.1 is to use lpcm. theres a write-up about it on the net. google it.

Sony needs to stop restricting features - 3.50 also kills a lot of 3rd party peripherals. Sony always was boasting about how they'd keep adding new features and upgrading the PS3 "It only does everything". They're using OMGHACKERS as an excuse. Fuck em. I can't wait until the CFW project is done, so that I can have 3.41+ installed with PSN support, homebrew programs like a full-codec playing Mplayer port, OtherOS support etc...

The Wii has been hacked six ways from sunday and Nintendo hasn't started removing features because they're afraid hackers would use them as a vector, and they're not banning Wiis because someone's playing an out-of-region disc, WiiWare, or game from a HDD - and the Wii is the most profitable console to date!

first of all the ps3 does bitstream lossless audio when watching movies. it doesnt when playing games. and yes this is a HUGE deal. one of the biggest reasons to by blu ray is the lossless audio. no more ps3 updates for me.

This change only applies to 3D movies.

Didn't you hear? Sony is the new internet whipping boy because they took away the OtherOS feature that almost no one was using. They can do no right from this point forward.
Nah, they've been the whipping boy (and in many ways rightfully so) for many a year now.

IMO wouldn't you want lossless audio to enhance the 3D video experience? Wouldn't gimping the audio detract from said experience? Though I suppose the argument would be more valid once 3D video has matured to more than just a marketing gimmick and actually meets/exceeds all the hype.

Here is the article I was talking about. It will stream DD or DTS in 5.1 but you need to switch it to lpcm to get DTS-MA or HD Master 5.1 or 7.1. It's still lossless, but the ps3 decodes it.

I remember when tech forums were frequented by technically minded people. Over half the replies in this thread are complete nonsense, most filled with bad grammar and excessive profanity. So sad ...

It would be interesting to know if this was a bandwidth issue with the HDMI port or a processing power issue. My guess is that the HDMI port on the PS3 can't handle all the data.

This sucks because I was hoping to get rid of my Samsung 3D Blu-ray player and use my PS3 but now I gotta keep it for the lossless audio which is definitely worth it. The crappier the movie, the more you'll wish you at least have some great visuals and outstanding audio to make it more enjoyable :D

This thread needs to die, There is NO change to regualr blu ray playback your nerds, ONLY 3D, stop complaining your losing PCM lossless, you still have that. Did you even bother to read the article and investigate for yourself? *face palm* for forum crawlers

Yes it's a big deal. My PS3's primary purpose is BRD playback to a rather nice HT system I've built over the last couple of years. I could care less about the fad that is 3d; give me back my lossless sound!!!

Unless I'm misunderstanding the post, if you're playing a 2D movie, nothing's changed. You get lossless sound. It's only on 3D that you wouldn't. So it shouldn't be a big deal to you, as it doesn't affect you.

I'd be ticked if lossless sound was gone on 2D content, but I didn't read it that way.

I hate 3D at the theaters (have to keep your eyes and what the movie wants you to look at or my eyes I get like a cramped head & eyeballs for the rest of the day)

3D on all the LCDs I looked it was choppy.

However when I watched the 3D on the new series of Mitsubishi DLPs (738,838), I was actually pretty satisfied and impressed. Very smooth, no headache. Picture quality not quite as sharp and colorful as the best LCDs but still good and the 3D was actually enjoyable. If only they didn't have input lag, I'd be enjoying it in my home right now.

Haven't tried 3D on any plasmas yet.

I think some people are reading the article wrong. SONY DIDN'T GET RID OF LOSSLESS AUDIO.
You just get the normal bitstream version of the audio when watching a 3D movie.
If anything, we get slightly crippled 3D playback "for free." They didn't remove anything from normal Blu-Ray movie playback.

Exactly! I think the summary was worded poorly to give that impression...

Only people with the PS3 Slim can bitstream TrueHD or DTS MA tracks in the first place. The older models cannot do this at all.

If it can still decode said streams and send multi-channel PCM over HDMI with 3D enabled, that rules out bandwidth and computation limitations. Decoding the audio would use more cpu time than just sending the bitstream. Also, the uncompressed PCM would use far more bandwidth than the compressed TrueHD or DTS MA tracks.

This is possibly some kind of HDMI compatibility. Isn't HDM 1.4 technically required for 3d? The PS3 slim is only HDMI 1.3 so they are probably doing a hack-job to get 3d to work at all.

I don't care about 3d at all, but wanted to bring in a little clarification.

This probably affects virtually nobody anyways. Most people are not using HDMI receivers, and most of those that are don't even care about or know about the lossless formats on blu-ray. Combine that with the fact that it only affects more recent PS3 buyers.
