Hey guys, I'm upgrading from a q9300 to an i7-950. My q9300 is currently cooled by an AC Freezer 7 which has done a good job and is extremely quiet. I'm a little out of the game and I was looking for a recommendation for a HSF for the i7. I don't plan on any crazy overclocking, and having something quiet is my main concern. Thanks in advance.

Your budget? The two big players in the game are Prolimatech and Thermalright. My personal favorite is Prolimatech Megahalems. If you want sth quiet, try the passive cooling/fanless thermalright hr-02.

theres about 300 threads talking about i7 heatsinks.. try looking around first..

Thanks for the useful reply. I did search and went through several threads, but like I said I'm looking for somethig quiet and comparable to what I have now. Maybe someone out there has done a similar upgrade with similar requirements. But anyway, thanks again.

Budget is around $40. I don't need anything crazy since I won't be doing any crazy overclocking.

Thanks for the advice on the hr-02. The Freezer 7 I have now is almost silent even with it's fan...to be honest I just hate the mounting system...seems so flimsy.

For your budget and the fact that you will not overclock, I would recommend the CM Hyper 212+

Thanks for the recommendation Boyo. That looked perfect - just picked one up for $24 at Microcenter. :)

Great bargain! Had no idea that Microcenter was selling at that price point. Good to know and glad you got your HSF.

I'm thinking of getting this one as well because of the bang for the buck.

What 120mm fan do you recommend for the dual setup?

one of the most recommended hsf fans is the scythe gentletyphoon ap-15, unfortunately they're nearly impossible to find currently because the design is being revised I hear. for push only setup the scythe s-flex f or g are also pretty awesome, not quite as quiet as the gt, but excellent performance (be aware that they can get considerably louder in pull set ups unless you use a shroud).
