LOTRO f2p starts on Sept 8th and 10th

I was subbed for over a year, stopped few months back, so past. So what, I have to pay for content even though I have already bought all of the expansion packs???

You won't lose access to any of the expansion content if you bought those before.

But you will access to some of the later quest in SoA after you finish Ered Luin, Shire, or Bree Land if you don't buy them or resub. But most of the later SoA quest was patched in so you're not losing too much of what you paid for.

You have to have a current sub, game card, or one of those 30 time cards in a retail box to be VIP.

Is there some chat channel I'm missing out on? I just made it out of that lvl 1-7 starter area and it seems like nobody is talking.

Does VIP earn me access to everything? How much does it run?

VIP gets you everything that you got before f2p started as a subscriber.

I bought a 60 day game card on amazon for $15. So $7.50 a month when i got it.

I heard even if you are VIP you have to shell out real money to boost your stats since the cash boosted stats will now be the "new normal."

yea, you can buy extra stuff as a VIP that was added for f2p, but its all optional. LOTRO is not big min/max game so it probably won't be the norm.

and it's not like someone can look at a dps meter and say "you are crap go buy some stats", lol

Still though, this fact alone means that I'm done probably. I don't like to be forced to buy quest packs in game, or have an option to buy stats with money. I liked the way Lotro was before. Where I was able to pay monthly with expansion packs once a year. This whole f2p thing isn't for me I guess.

The game is bugged like a motherfucker since the F2P launch. I hope they get some of this crap fixed. Really annoying things that were working fine before, now screwed.

Like what?

My biggest problem right now is pathing for just about every creature in Dol Guldur...I shoot an uruk-hai, and he runs to me and gets stuck behind a tree until he resets or I move into line of sight.

Plus they rebuilt Othrongroth, split it into 3 or 4 smaller instances, and one of them is broken, so they closed it, and now nobody can finish those quests.

I like the LOTRO model for everything except the stat buying, which I think is BS. You can still pay what you were paying before to access everything.

I'm probably only gonna play this game with my wife and we wouldn't play enough to get our $30/month out of WOW. It only cost us $30 total for two D2D starter packs and two Mines of Moria. So we can level 1-20 for free, have 2 months of VIP to get most of the way to 50, have 1000 points +1000 for the VIP months each + whatever we earn in game to buy whatever else is needed to get to 50, then already own the content from 50-60. That's not bad at all, to get 4-6 months of content for 2 people for $30, when it would normally be $120-$180 under a subscription model.

I can completely understand why former subscribers are pissed though, since the game was diminished some going to f2p.

Yea, I understand that with VIP I can have most things, but still not all. State buying was jaw dropping to me. I'm sure it will make them lots of money as stats are a pain to get in Lotro at times. It did make mefeel accomplished though, now its all gone. All the gridning hours I've spent were basically useless lol. I'm actually thinking of giving aoc another chance now that I'm basically done with Lotro. I just don't see myself enjoying it like I once did, layering is another big thing with me, makes me feel displaced. It does have its benefits, but the negatives outweigh them to me.

I have to agree that the stat buying is the only I don't like in the f2p model. I did some more reading on it and it looks like Stat Tomes are also drops in game. So that does help a bit in this regard.

But the fact reminds that this extra revenue will help get us to Mordor with further expansions, instances, quest, polish, ect. It's not a big PvP game, so I don't really care if someone wants to spend money on their character which more than likely won't effect me when I'm playing.

The stat tomes only raise your core stats (of which there are 5) by 30 each, and it costs close to 6000 turbine points to do so. 30 is a pretty trival amount when the cap for these stats is 650, and many characters are already very close to the cap with their primary stat (like my hunter's agility, which is 636).

What I am using them for is to shore up some shortcomings. My hunter's in-combat power regeneration isn't as great as it should be, so I am adding all the Fate I can.

Downloading the client. Need something to play this week and I do remember enjoying the beta and almost bought a lifetime sub.

I'm tempted to try this game out, but with ffxiv not too far away, I think I will pass. I did try dungeons and dragons when it went free though.

Got some friends to download the game. Played with one and we got to level 15 today as a Minstel/Lore-Master duo.

How I do I purchase the Siege of Mirkwood Expansion? It's not for sale in their web store nor can I find a hard copy online.

As I understand it, you have to buy it through the in game store now, which is why I recommended people to buy the stuff before f2p hit. I'm not sure on the pricing, but you'll have to purchase Turbine points to buy the expansion pack through the in game store. However, once purchased, it will remain unlocked for all of your characters on the account.

Wow, the downloader is going at 1.2MBps this morning. Nice.

EDIT: BTW, this game is EVIL!

Oh so you're saying buying the cheap retail complete edition with MoM won't work anymore if I want the first expansion? That's what I was thinking of doing but it seems like it's too late now.

It will still work. Any un-used keys will work fine.

Played through the introduction quests last night. Kept telling myself I should quit a go to bed. Finally got to where I said "ok, I did the early stuff, now I need to sleep". So I went to bed. Now I'm gonna transfer the install files to my laptop and see if it runs there so I can play it during my downtime at school.

i started back up with f2p on nimrodel. was nice to play again but that place is pretty empty. might start fresh on a new server

I'm already done with LOTRO F2P.

If I want to play a gimped MMO demo, I'll try EQ2. In the meantime, going back to DDO.

You also lose ALL swift travel access outside of starting zones, all major quest chains above the lvl 20-25 zones (you can finish quests already in log, but not continue) and any future characters created will be subject to Premium level limits.

I am enjoying this to some extent. The thing that is bugging me is the same thing that bugs me about most mmos minus wow and guildwars. Things just don't feel right. The combat does not feel smooth. The animation dont feel smooth. Oh and the full screen map is just about the ugliest thing i have ever seen hehe (any way to fix that?).

you thought it was ALL free? ;) This is what you would call the hook. At about lvl 20 you either start paying up if you like the game, lvl another toon to 20, or make due knowing that as a f2p player you will have a more limited game experience.

Turbine knows there will be alot of players that don't like the model and that's fine, but on the other hand they know from their DDO experience that alot will buy into this system if they like the game, and they will make a profit.

I admit I haven't done much research on it yet, but for some reason I felt intrigued to resub to LotRO. I got a retail copy of the game maybe 1 year ago and played for a month. Anyways, now that I have the game downloaded and updated, I am curious as to what route I should go, or if I even have an option?

Do I need to resub, paying the monthly fee? My character iirc is level 10 and I don't mind paying, but will I be seeing any of the benefits of a paid subscription at that low of a level? I definitely don't want to feel 'limited' while I do play. Also, do I need to 'buy' any of the new content?

Anyways, looking forward to trying this game out again! I actually had a better time with LotRO than any of the other MMO's (aion, aoc, war) I have tried, excluding WoW.

If you're still leveling, it's probably worth getting a 3 month sub for $30. At the level cap you should be ok being a premium freeloader.

Having never played to cap before, what is life at 65 like? I know there are raids and stuff, are they similar to WoW? I’ve read that you can’t do the PvMP if you don’t subscribe, but how feasible will raiding be as premium-only? This assumes that you buy both the Moria and Mirkwood expansions to get to 65, and will likely have been VIP at least at some point (via the Moria free 30-days).

It's very feasible. There are always people in /joinchannel glff looking for and creating raids. I work nights, so I have to do raids like that because my kinship raids while I'm at work.

At 65 you can do everything you could do at 20. Skirms, raids, instances, PVMP if you subbed.

Skirming is another means of advancement because you can barter tokens from skirmishes to get better gear.

Apparently, they have raised prices since last week:

12-Months - $143.40 ($11.95/month - Save 20%)
6-Months - $77.70 ($12.95/month - Save 13%)
3-Months - $41.85 ($13.95/month - Save 7%)
Monthly - $14.99

I'm playing F2P now and feel exactly the same way, so many basic things just don't feel right. I'm trying to give it a chance since it's free, but I have to make a conscious effort to avoid comparing it to WoW and other games.

go into the ui options and enable the 'skill queue' to display. in lotro you can always select your next spell/attack while the current one is casting or animating. this prevents the game from being a spam clicking fest like wow and gives the combat a very different feel. i've found that showing people the skill queue results in the combat feeling much better once you see what is going on. when the skill queue is hidden, things can feel clunky (at least for my friends and i).

the map sucks, not much you can do about it.

Well, that sucks.

Still have my characters from a few years ago when i checked last night. Was about the same as i remembered except for some lag, but not as bad as i feared it would be. Have to relearn some stuff but alot of it isn't too bad to understand.
STILL trying to get my horse back but i'll figure it out..lol
Do a lifetime sub so i don't really have to worry about being nickeled and dimed too much except for expansions. (Well, I HOPE)
I'm having fun with it so far but it's more of a mmo i can relax on rather than do hardcore at the moment. Still fun to play imho.
