before i start reading for the next few days i wanted to start out by asking this:
if i succeded in turning a small refrigerator or freezer into a case for my pc, would that be ok or are there variables that im not considering?

the attic is hot, but my wife decided this year i can turn the attic into a man cave. central air wont be installed until next year (we're saving) and im considering a portable a/c for now. in the meantime im thinking of an old fridge that i can somehow mod and put my pc in there (mobo, hdd, etc)

am i missing something? i have not seen anyone do it perhaps there is a good reason why that i have overlooked......

Condensation.

It would be safer to build a water cooling system and using the freezer or fridge to contain the radiator(s.)

Old freezer may = condensation or other moisture in a hot humid attic =- bad.

Watercool CPU with Corsair H50 or H70, install a big-ass vent fan in the attic.

There is a special spray coating that you can use on the mobo to stop condensation, but that wont stop your other components ie HDD memory and stuff from having problems. We tried this a few years ago, and it didn't work all that great. Being a refrigeration guy by trade we tried a lot of crazy weird stuff.

But sticking the rad in the frig will work, I use to have a rad outside for a WC pc I had for the winter time, that work awesome. If you have a thermostat control on the fridge, you can crank it down real low and stick the rad in there and you will get some killer temps. Enough you could OC like crazy.

Only thing to be careful of with the rad in the frig is the head pressure of the pump. If there is to much piping and you have a small pump it will burn out. Just make sure you have a nice big pump.

Best of luck.

Its been done but one of the major issues is the constant heat output of the computer. Fridges, and a small one espically are not made to remove that amount of constant heat. The compressor will run almost if not all the time and if its a beefy machine will have a real struggle keeping up. Frost/condensation as mentioned above is also an issue. But hey, it could be fun to mess with. Not sure I would put my top of the line machine in there until I tested on an inexpensive board.

Maybe get a larger room AC and stick a piece of dryer duct over part of the output vents and pipe over some cool air to the machines intake fan ? The AC takes the moisture out of the air so condensation should not be an issue. (or just turn it up till ice cubes come out of the AC :) same difference )

Some Google work and a vist to the extream cooling subforum should turn up some info. We have a guy that used a small room AC to chill water for his water cooling loop that looked pretty interesting. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1534223

This. Have this freezer be outside, run two water (with some antifreeze solution of some sort) lines to it, have a coil inside (maybe an old rad?) and a pump for the water. The two lines would go in the house, then to another coil. Have a fan blow air over this coil into the case, or just, into the room. Redneck AC. :D The coil itself will condensate, so you'll want to catch that water and have it drain somewhere. This is sorta how central AC works, except instead of water, it's a refrigerant.

I've had thoughts of doing this to build my own central AC system, but I'm not sure how much BTU a typical freezer actually puts out. Need about 12,000 per 500-600 square feet, for it to be noticeable.
