Hearing Steve Jobs say anything about Facebook having “onerous terms” is comical. As far as I knew, Apple owned the term “onerous.” ;)

When I asked Jobs about that, he said Apple had indeed held talks with Facebook about a variety of unspecified partnerships related to Ping, but the discussions went nowhere. The reason, according to Jobs: Facebook wanted “onerous terms that we could not agree to.”

Easily the best pot/kettle comment of the YEAR. LOL And just when you thought good ole' Unkie Steve couldn't one-up himself.

That means a lot coming from a CEO who runs a cell phone totalitarian dictatorship of which you cannot use any applications without his approval or he decides which cell phone network you're allowed to use.

Jailbreak and unlock it. Problem solved. Isn't android the same way? You go to the carrier that has the phone you want and you are limited to apps on the market place...unless you root it.

Personally I like the filter in place to prevent just anyone from putting up malicious apps.

Well, only when a Jailbreak and an unlock actually exists so, no, it's not a general all-purpose solution - it only applies in specific situations (the Jailbreak works and is public, unless you're one of the "chosen few" and unlocks only relate to phones so...).

I know bashing Apple is the cool thing to do these days, but IMHO Apple is not nearly as bad as Facebook when it comes to this kind of stuff.

Two things I love to hate, both fighting with each other - awesome.

That's absolutely false. Android allows third party apps. There's a setting in the phone that allows you to either turn on or off the allowance of non-marketplace apps.

Gameloft is a perfect example, they offer a whole line of games that aren't on Marketplace. To get them you buy them off their website, download them to the phone, and open the .apk file and load them.

Really has nothing to do with it being "cool," Apple pretty much deserved much of the ribbing they have gotten and the overall company smugitude doesn't help.

Onerous terms...well I don't really see any ones listed as for as APPLE or Facebook

Verizon store told my dad to root his Droid, even let him play around with their personal phones to see the difference and see what else he could do with it.

You aren't going to see that at an Apple store.

Really?

Yes, but that is specifically AT&T doing that, not Android itself. What did you expect from them?

So? Blocked is blocked. The person I quited said Android 3rd party apps do not get blocked. I showed him he was wrong. I don't give a damn who's doing the blocking, he's wrong.

Android allows it, hence my correct quote.. AT&T is the one locking down phones..it's not an Android problem. It's not stopping everybody from downloading the games and side loading them anyway.

lol, someone not bending over so apple can take him in his ass, that is onerous...

i guess apple wanted a portion of all advertising revenue for everything displaying in their iphone browser.

you're wrong.

Is this not the same situation with the iPhone though? Who's doing the blocking--the carrier or the OS?

I expect the "onerous" terms are exactly that: Facebook doesn't provide a facility to block non-Apple-approved partners.

Hello, have we met? Read the article. Google it.

I'm well aware you can root any Android phone to bypass it. People conveniently ignore the fact that you can also Jailbreak an iPhone.

Here's a piece of tidbit 99% of you tend to forget: the average Joe are not [H] readers. Blocked is blocked.

Sory mate but you cant read apparently.... AT&T blocking app installs for their clients is nothing at all like apple. On every single Iphone you buy it is locked out of 3rd party apps.. Period. Dosnt matter what carrier or country you are in. Jailbreaking is your only option.

Android on the other hand, is completely open. Up north where we are they are not locked, Anyone who carries them that isnt AT&T they arnt locked. So its not at all the same. You cant bad mouth android over AT&Ts choice, U CAN badmouth apple over it cause its a blanket policy that covers every Iphone on the planet.

:) not trying to be rude, but you are completely off target on this one man.

Apple is. Asking that question shows you have little understanding of the smartphone market.

You're talking out of your ass. I bought a Droid Incredible from Verizon. I clicked "menu, settings" and then checked a box that said "allow application install from anywhere".

I did not root, hack, or modify the phone in any way, shape or forum. I am able to install apps from SD card, dropbox, downloaded apps, anywhere.

You do not have to modify Android in any way shape or form to install apps from anywhere. Google themselves explicitly allows it, while Apple explicitly forbids it.

Period.

Just installed the third party Angry Birds Beta off MegaUploads a few minutes ago. Downloaded the file to the phone, opened the .apk and I was up and running. Mighty handy considering that while it's supposed to be on Marketplace it's not right now.

/facepalm

I'll give you another chance to start over and read what I said above before I post again.

Dude, ive read your posts over and over and they still make no differance.

You compare two totaly differant things.

Iphone and Andoid handle 3rd party apps in completely differant ways.
Do you own a buncha apple stuff? Cause what you are spouting sounds like those typical rose/tunnel vision glasses they hand out at the door of the apple store...

They are not the same. k thnx bye.
