Best Performing 24 inch monitor & best looking IPS panel. Which one is it for gaming? Is it better to go with 24 inch & get the higher res or is it barely noticeable when compared to the 23 inch with a little less resolution?

Should I go with an LED monitor or stick with LCD? Is that the best monitor to buy as far as larger 23-24 inch monitors go?

Thats 8ms black to white. The bullshit marketing with 2ms is grey to grey.

The Dell u2311h is very nice but not "the best by a longshot". The NEC EA231wmi beats it in many categories.

However, the Dell does have an $80 off coupon at the dell store, so if you are going to buy, I would not hesitate to get it at $239.

Now, if you have the cash, there are some VERY nice monitors for $600+.

what about the tinting issues though? is that a problem with every u2311h?

It's common on most IPS panels so it's really luck of the draw.

You might as well go for the best over all performing panel though sense most seem to have tinting or other problems.

So whats the verdict? Is there anything better at a higher price range that actually looks much better than these sub 400 monitors?

This also applies to the Dell u2311h as well as many of the other 23-24inch IPS monitors.

"The Dell U2311H has a specified 8ms G2G response time"

For what it's worth, I received my U2311H on Monday....no tinting issues whatsoever. In terms of responsiveness, it has roughly the same (maybe even a little less) ghosting as compared to my previous 5ms TN panel.

.

I got one yesterday and it has no tinting issues. For $255 it was a steal!

Same here got mine for 255 & yes it was a steal. I got it next to my 20 inch IPS Dell WS monitor & the 23 looks a lot better!

how are those IPS for gaming? i got a 5 ms monitor and man do i notice ghosting and i hate it.

The u2311h is in practice between a 2ms and 5ms TN, but at the same time for me I do notice ghosting. Then again I even notice ghosting on a 2ms TN. It is just at this point I'm willing to accept the difference over say color shifting all over the screen even when viewed head on.

Manufacturer stated pixel response times are worthless. You have to actually test the LCD to see how good it is. My 5ms IPS doesn't ghost anymore than my 120Hz 2ms TN.

i realize its subjective but reviews on IPS always state its not ideal for games.

Forget the response times.

"Our most important and significant result is that the LCD manufacturers have finally beaten the motion blur problem. So it's time for both consumers and manufacturers to forget about this tamed 800 pound Response Time gorilla and focus on much more productive and fascinating display technology and marketing issues, such as the upcoming generations of 3D displays.

As a result our bottom line recommendations are… If you stick with the mid to top tier models from the reputable brands, you should ignore Response Time specifications, not worry about LCD motion blur, and don’t spend extra for 120 Hz or higher refresh rates, strobed LED backlighting, or advanced motion blur processing."

If you go to like Digital Versus they have a large selection of high shutter speed shots of LCDs when displaying a moving image. This will give you an idea of the relative speeds of monitors you are comparing.

Keep in mind though this isn't very useful unless you have an reference to what type of ghosting tolerance you want. It also doesn't show the weakness of certain color transitions on certain monitors/technology times.

From my personal experience though (in terms of what I see) LCDs blur at this rating range. While I can tell the difference between them, from an practical perspective it is a "wash" basically, as even the 2ms will still blur to the point of being very noticeable when panning over fine detail. I'm not sure how much the new 120hz TNs though alleviate this as I haven't tried one (waiting for the 2nd generation of these before considering).

If you're a gamer then you should probably worry more about input lag than ghosting.

120Hz improves the situation but does not eliminate the problem. "Fine" detail will still blur

Exactly. Anything less than 10ms for ghosting is a general wash. Input lag is much more noticeable.

You have to keep in mind with the response time ratings they are very limited as they measure only the transition time for a specific scenario (in most cases gray to gray), as you might think this is extremely limited since from practical use you would not be constrained to this scenario. This is why high shutter speed picture comparisons of moving images is a better indicator how much faster a monitor is relative to another.

A 2ms TN for instance is not measurable to be 4x faster then a 8ms IPS in practice for instance, as its speed advantage is not the same outside of gray to gray transitions.

Where are people getting it for $255? I went to the dell store and I don't see this magical coupon. Did they stop it?

I'm also interested in these "$600 monitors that blow this one away". My usage is 100% gaming. Clicking "checkout" button soon =).
