The official old school games thread

286/386

Gabrial Knight: Sins of the Father
Kings Quest
Might & Magic IV, V: Clouds of Xeen
Out of this World
Ultima VI, VII, VIII, Underworld I & II
Wing Commander
Quake
Wolfenstein 3D

Commadore 64/128
Bruce Lee
Flight Simulator
Wrestlemania

There was this turn-based game on C64/128 where you'd drive around this futuristic car in 1st person and jump from area to area battling stuff with different energy weapons. Other than what it looked like, I just remember the cars took their names from roman gods: apollo, aires et.... I'd give good money if someone could remember me this one.

Anybody remember Akalabeth? How about The Bilestoad?

Go ahead, try to get more old school! I darez ya!

Akalabeth and Bilestoad were two of my favorite Apple IIe games, I must have played each for like 100 hours!

I have them in an Apple IIe emulator, but my emulator is not working in win7. Have to work on that, run a virtual OS or something.

anyone know a way to play a good looking version of R-Type on PC? the only thing I found is this (using Turbo Engine Emulator to mount that small 164KB game file) but it's not complete and looks bad.

Really I have too many games to even list here that come to mind but some I played CONSTANTLY when I was younger:

King's Quest Series
Manhunter
Quest for glory series
Gabriel Knight
Leisure Suit Larry Series
Space Quest series

Ok... let me just condense the above and say pretty much every Sierra game put out back then lmao

Jumpman
Whistler Bros
Blockout 2
Wing commander
Xwing
Shadow of the Beast
Lemmings!
Mortal Kombat (not that old but I was thrilled when it came out for PC!!!!)
DOOM
Wolfenstein 3D
Day of the Tenticle
Sam n Max

Sadly as time goes on I feel games are getting to complicated and don't hold my interest as much. Getting old sucks!!

Abandonware is just another name for piracy.

These games were not released by the copyright owners and it is just as illegal to download them as it would be to download a copy of Crysis. Please stop posting links to games that were not released by the owners.

try these games instead

I legally see your point, however with digital distribution being a proven model to distribute games that requires next to zero capital investment there is no reason for these games to not be available. If there is a means to distribute it, they should. My rule of thumb and it is just that MY rule of thumb is if they have not made it legitly available for 10 years or more it is abandoned and I'll get it where I can.

Games I just recently played for the first time:

Gabriel Knight
Phantasmagoria
Dues Ex

Games I loved then and still do:
Diablo 1/2
Star Trek 25th Anniversary (CD Version - the real actors voice all the lines!)
Star Trek Judgement Rites (CD Version - the real actors voice all the lines!)
Betrayal at Krondor (Played this so much when I had my wisdom teeth taken out)
All the id Games

Total Annihilation (incl expansions and epic soundtrack) and Raptor: Call of the shadows are now on GoG, ooooh boy :D

Jesus! So many responses. You guys are killing me. I'm updating the OP a little at a time when I get some free time at work, I will eventually catch up.

I understand your point and I would have absolutely no problem throwing a couple dollars towards old PC games so that I could play them in a modern OS. As it stands, however, the only place they are available is via download. Seriously, there is a goldmine for any publisher willing to put up pre-Pentium games, as I call them, on Steam.

In my view software becomes freeware as soon as it is too old to be used on a viable OS -- I'm not talking about Doom 3 here: we're talking about games that would never run on any modern OS. Yes, I could somehow rebuild a Windows 3.1 box, but that's not realistic -- and even if I could install from the old media, you can't actually find disks anywhere. Probably the strongest reason I feel ok about downloading old games to run them in emulation is that I once did own them, but the media is now lost or obsolete.

In addition to most games mentioned, I remember playing through the Tex Murphy series. Those were great games, and were real system-killers at the time. Under a Killing Moon, The Pandora Directive, etc.

I remember really liking Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller, which featured the voice of the late Dennis Hopper.

Mission Critical, one of the many games from the time featuring Michael Dorn's voice. A cool sci-fi adventure game.

Ripper, a pretty lame FMV adventure featuring Christopher Walken.

I remember one of the creepiest and most radical games of the time, The Orion Conspiracy. Kind of like a Dead-Space/Event Horizon-ish sci-fi mystery, which was one of the first time I heard copious swearing and sexual discussion in a PC game.

I agree... I wish copyright was more similar to trademarking. If they don't take efforts to protect a trademark, they lose it. And in this case, if they don't take efforts to make something available for sale, they lose it.

I know it won't happen - but it would be nice. I'd really pay about $50 for a full Wing Commander set on Steam (including Armada, Privateer, Academy, etc).

Agreed what's point of perpetuating a trademark on something you won't even support. I can't buy Panzer Dragoon Saga so bite me I'm downloading it. Theyd make record breaking amounts of money putting these games on xboxlive for PSN. I mean the tools to do this are already out there. Fools.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Counter-Strike yet. Even though it's still going strong, it's just as old, and therefore 'classic', as some of the other games being referenced.

For me it started with Atari 2600

Atari 2600
-----------------------
Tarzan
River raid

Commodore 64
---------------------------
The Last Ninja
Operation Thunderbolt

Amiga 500
---------------------------
The Defender of the Crown
Shadow of the Beast

PC
---------------------------
Wolf 3D
Doom
Need for Speed 2
Civilization II
Age of Empires 2
Heories of Might and Magic III
Medal of Honor
Call of Duty

There's already a place. It's called Good Old Games. They're officially licensed games from the actual developer, and have the games running DRM free and through DOS-Box or other emulators if necessary. There's also GameTap for other old games released on multiple systems.

They don't have even close to a third of the games I'd be interested in, sadly. Still, great sites.

Thanks, I hadn't seen those sites. Downloading Outcast from gog now. Love that game... first great open world, behind the back rpg imo.

They are, however, missing most of the stuff I used to play. Hopefully, they'll keep building their libraries.
