Designing faster and more efficient enterprise server & storage solutions is now possible with Viking Modular Solutions™ SATADIMM. The SATADIMM is a high-performance, high-availability Enterprise Class Solid State Drive (SSD) in an industry-standard JEDEC 240-pin DDR3 DIMM form factor (JEDEC MO-269). Viking Modular’s SATADIMM is designed to take advantage of available DDR3 DIMM sockets, deriving power from the 1.5V supply to the DIMM socket; eliminating the need for a power cable. Simply insert SATADIMM into any available DIMM socket, connect a SATA data cable and begin enjoying all the benefits of high performance SATA SSD.

More information on capacity and R/W rates may be found here (.pdf). I might look into these. :)

you'd think the speeds would be better since the cpu can access it faster.....

If the weight and size is the same as a DIMM, sounds like an interesting way to mount a drive.

This could be very usefull got embedded systems where space a constraint.

Not really seeing much of a market for this. I mean most systems that are space constrained are also short on DIMM slots. Is this really that much of a space savings over a 1.8" SSD?

On second thought - you put RAM and an SSD on the same stick that can both be accessed through the DIMM slot with no additional cables and I'm sold. Now that could be useful.

No way to talk to the SSD as SATA and DDR memory interfaces are worlds apart, however you do raise an interesting point. If they make a module where there is some usable ram say 1~2 gig on one stick this it would be interesting from an integration point of view. With a careful section of SATA cables you can get some interesting results space wise.

These would be neat for clusters on one of those H55 ITX boards, you could shrink the box even more if you eliminate drive bay and in turn have a greater density of machines.

Smells expensive, very expensive. But most things tagged with the word "Enterprise" tend to.

so...you're sacrificing being able to add more memory, in favor of saving a little bit of space? seems silly to me. I'd never buy it. If anything i want BIGGER (both physically and storage capacity) SSDs. Give me more full 3.5" SSD so that i can slide it into my case without worrying about a separate mounting bracket or anything like that.

Though I know thats not possible, that would be friggin sweet. :)

Personally, I dont see a use for something like this save some limited SFF applications. Though with SSDs as small as they are these getting these days Im sure they could find a more useful way to do this without using up a DIMM slot. I dont know about you all, but in every server Ive ever used, we have utilitized every single one of the DIMM slots.

If you still have to access it via the SATA controller, then there's really no gain at all compared to conventional SSD drives...unless you have a spare slot AND it costs less.

To be honest i would much prefer something like 32 or 64gb sticks of ram and use them for a ram drive (computer is on 24/7 so would only cause massive load times once or maybe twice per month for me) and then some real ssd's raided for an acceptable load time.... i am not saying anything about the insane cost of that though :p
