Assassin's Creed II on PC 14.99

Good deal, but until the DRM is removed I am not touching that title with a 10' pole.

I got it for this price and have been enjoying it quite a bit. The DRM pisses me off, but hasn't given me any issues. Fun game @ a great price. I would say to grab The Saboteur too for free shipping, but you would still be a few bucks short of $25!

great game, great buy, I might pickup a couple copies for friends...

assuming tuition doesn't take all my monies.

it didn't once bother me.
edit: thats not true, mysteriously for 10 minutes I couldn't play. Made myself a cup of coffee and all was well.

i got this during the $1 ubistore fiasco, the drm isnt as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

It is not whether the drm is "that bad" or whether it gives any problems. It is the fact that PAYING CUSTOMERS are being treated as criminals. Why in the world does a person who PAID FOR the game need to prove they paid for the game every single time they want to play a game!!!
It is about never supporting a horrible idea & the backwards company that thought of & implemented the bad idea.
There are plenty of good games from good publishers that don't treat their customers like criminals. No game is good enough to support idiocy in this form.

yup, idiocy so bad it made me stop using the product for 10 minutes to go and make a cup of coffee. Speaking of which...

And I thought my high-horse was high.

I figured this would be your argument, and I guess you could make a point of this, but man, I really dont see this as a big issue. "treated like a criminal' is pretty sensationalistic: I mean, yeah, you have to demonstrate you bought the game every time you play it. What does that entail? You click "log-on" once in a while, and you maintain an internet connection. Jeff Gurstman, Editor ad GiantBomb.com, was saying that "If this is what video games on the PC have to resort to then maybe they should just ... not" [or words to that effect] and I mean, yeah it sounds bad when you paraphrase what this DRM is doing, and yes its unheard of, and yes its heavy handed, and yes its absolutely circumventable, but it didn't cause the 90%+ majority from having problems, so I just cant seem to give a damn.

If you don't have a problem with it, then great for you. It is just a moral argument. By buying a game that has that strict of drm, and yes...it IS that strict if you have to log onto their server to play a single player game EVERY SINGLE TIME, you are telling Ubisoft that it is ok to treat customers like this. I think if they are that scared or worried about piracy...just don't release their games on the pc platform. Honestly...no game is that good.
Have me log on once to validate the game & leave it at that...fine. I see no point in any further validation. Ethical & moral.
& "treated like a criminal"...yes..it is no different than house arrest where you have a device that "validates" your presence in your own home.

looks like a great deal OP. Might have to pick it up :), thanks.

Why do we got to have arguing in the [H]otDeals section, if you dont like it or refuse to buy it cause of some BS then just move along and leave it be. Pretty simple right?
Everyone knows by now about the DRM with this game, really no need to argue about it once again, lol.

I've got to stop looking at these threads. Every time a semi-recent blockbuster goes on sale for $15 or less, I end up with another title on my shelf or in my Steam account that I never touch.

I bought this game on Amazon last month and just beat it almost 2 weeks ago. For what it is, it greatly improves on the original Assassin's Creed in just about every single way. The little bits of humor thrown in there were a welcome surprise that made the game that much more enjoyable.

Only once did I encounter an issue with the Ubi servers being down that prevented me from continuing my game. It lasted for a few good hours but I just went on to do other things so no harm, no foul. Yes, it can be inconvenient at times, and yes it can be annoying to log into a server before launching a game, but isn't that how Steam operates as well?

In any case, DRM aside, for the close to 30 hours of fun that I got out of this game, that roughly translates to about $0.50 per hour more or less. That to me is a fantastic deal, DRM or not. :D

After all the trouble I've had with Splinter Cell: Conviction - having to retry 3 times, every time I start the game, to log into my friends list, multiplayer and COOP matchmaking being one of the biggest jokes in gaming, and multiple instances of UBI's login servers going down and blaming customers on the forums when it was their fault all along - I think I'll pass. One good thing is the prices of UBI's games seem to drop faster than other new releases.

Steam has an offline mode which allows single player games to be played without logging in to Steam.

eh, to be honest DRM @ $15 doesn't bother me as much as DRM @ $60
long term also I hope they patch it out

I think I speak for many of us when I say we like to buy our games not rent them...

x2

awesome price and I've heard that it was a great game, but I wouldn't even consider buying it until they remove the BS drm. That kind of crap just pisses me off. I'd gladly pay 60.00 for it, but with their current DRM system, it's not even worth 15.00 to me.

I pretty much hold the same opinion of Ubisoft as I do Sony these days (rootkit circa 05). Unless they do something to show that they actually give a crap about their customers, there are better manufacturers, develoeprs and publishers that deserve my hard earned money :)

Well, IMO the message has been stated loudly and clearly. 5 months to $15 ? That has to be a record.
Why did that happen? Because the game offers less value to consumers and price had to be changed to create a demand.
So did the DRM work? We will see with more upcoming UBI titles. Obviously RUSE did not want it and they got steamworks instead.

The DRM pisses me off too but I will buy it eventually. If it wasn't for that DRM I would've bought it not long after it came out but because of it, I'll wait til it gets down to $9.99. So I guess it depends on how much it pisses you off.

Same.

I spent a month where my internet connection would cut out dozens or hundreds of times a day... for everywhere from seconds to hours. I couldn't play multiplayer games, and figured that the single-player would be safe. Evidently not.

I've gotten far far more careful about DRM schemes since then. If I buy a single-player game, I want it to play when my internet isn't available!

Steam has an offline mode which allows single player games to be played without logging in to Steam.

I realized someone was going to mention this, and it is a fair counter point.

For me, it came down to the point where for $15 I was willing to give the game a try to see what all the fuss was about regarding not only the DRM but, more importantly, just how much better the second game improved upon the first. To be fair, I didn't even really like the first game all that much either so I was pleasantly surprised at just how good the second one turned out to be.

To everyone who bashes the DRM, I do appreciate all the reservations that you have against it and applaud everyone who is taking a high moral stand against company practices such as these. But from where I stand, people need to stop being so adamant about this game's DRM being the only reason holding this back from being an instant purchase in these deal threads.

A one time mentioning of the DRM is more than enough. If you have high morals than let this deal be and move on, no one is forcing you to buy it and people have already been warned within the first page of this thread by the high moralists who seem to watch these threads like hawks. Let us "less than savory" people do what we want with our money.

I really want this game, but add me to the crowd that won't buy it because of DRM. The principle of the whole thing is enough without the fact that my wireless acts spotty sometimes.

I might cave in eventually, but not for $15, even though I do think that's a good deal.

Its just really a easy excuse. Everyone knows its a BS answer to justify there purchase. Whenever a game is bought on steam.. It means they have internet. So ya its really a dumb excuse.

I bought the game during the 1$ sale.. have had zero issues. about half way tho. My PC has internet. I pay to use it. And plus I like features like saving saves on there servers.

Steam doesn't constantly check your internet while you're gaming, though.

I liken the possible issues with AC2 to the known issues I have experienced with TDU.

There's nothing more aggravating to be doing a single-player mission in TDU (and some of these can take an hour, mind you...), just to be in the middle of it (I think I once had this occur at the 40+min mark) and have this message pop-up on your screen:

"Connection lost to the TDU servers. Mission failed."

It's an SP mission. Why does it even have to be in constant contact with the servers? Why does the mission have to abruptly instantly fail due to this though too anyway?

Why does it check this, and why does it care?

And that's not even DRM in TDU's case. It's an MP game, but it apparently keeps in contact with the servers even when you're doing an SP part of it.

My experience with TDU makes me realize that if you're not playing MP, then there's just no good reason to have to be in constant contact with a server...

It can only hurt your enjoyment of the game... Even though you paid for it, and this is its attempt to assure you are constantly legit...

If you went to the theater and the ushers were checking for your ticket stub every two minutes distracting you from the movie, how long would it take before you went to a competing theater that was only bothering you for your ticket stub when you entered the theater?

Except that the "ticket check" happens in the background and is only a problem if you eat your ticket in the middle of the film for some reason and no longer have it available to check.

This game is excellent. Yeah, I sold my soul for the DRM, but support for Surround is flawless and it's far more interesting than the first. Cities are just beautiful, though facial detail is pretty bad.

Or if you have problems with your connection. Then the ticket check results in the guy stopping the movie every minute or so, usually just for a few seconds, but sometimes for a few minutes, and every once in a while it goes off for hours. Then you get to restart the movie and hope that you make it to the end this time.

I've been there. It took over a month for ATT to decide that maybe just maybe I know wtf I'm talking about and the problem was with their equipment (wound up being a faulty port on their router in one of their distribution boxes)

I want single-player games for when my internet goes out. You know, for when you can't play multiplayer games? Not buying the stuff with this crap-DRM is about more than the "moral high ground", it's about getting a product that will actually work when I need it to work.

And that's fine if that is your need for SP games, and if you routinely have issues with your internet connection.

Mine has a 99.99% uptime, and I like SP games for times other than "when MP isn't available". Some nights I'm just not in the mood for other people.

Anyway, I bought a key for AC2 for 25 bucks at release and I considered it money well spent. I was never prevented from playing when I wanted to.

Not bad of a deal. However I will wait for it to be $10 before taking the plunge. Also, my internet connection has been shoddy these past few weeks; occasionally disconnecting...stupid comcast.
