Which GTX460 1GB to get? EVGA has 8 different ones?

Ok I am upgrading my system to an GTX460, most likely SLI setup. I game at 1900x1200 with 2XAA so, my research indicates to get the 1GB version with the higher memory bandwidth. Upon looking at the cards at Newegg there are 8 different ones? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...01402 600007323 600007779&IsNodeId=1&name=1GB

which is the best one to get, also I noticed one has 352 cores but a slower clock speed? is that any good.

I would like to keep it on the cheaper side since I will be doing SLI.

I suggest getting the External Exhaust One, with 1G and the reason why there are so many different kind is because some of them only carry a two year warranty and some carry a lifetime. However this one hands down is the best in my opinion. I have it and it works phenomenally, Plus I over clocked the core too 800 and added quite a bit of frames!

I agree with that choice. I also have it and overclocked it with ease. I've not taken it higher, so who knows how well it can overclock.

Mine is the non super overclocked one. It overclocks just as well as the super clocked one.

I've heard good things about the MSI cyclone, Gigabyte, and Asus ones. I put in an order for an Asus one on Amazon but it's probably backordered for a month.

EVGA by far is the best hands down with the EE, i have mine overclocked to 840 / 1680 / 1970.

if you want best cooling for gtx460, go for msi.
i own both msi and gigabyte and msi is way cooler than gigabyte in load(idle is about same)

I've got the MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1GD5/OC 1GB with another on the way. I'm very happy with it so far, but my understanding is that

  • you really can't go wrong with any of the mainstream 460GTX's
the 1GB is worth the extra $ over the 768 in terms of bang for the buck
external exhaust is typically a bit louder then internal exhaust
the cooler on the MSI looks pretty cool (IMHO)

above would seem the best option as the heat gets dumped outside of the case

i have had 2 GTX465 that Dump the heat inside the case and they are noisy as the heat ends up looping back into the fan makes the fan speed go up and then to be very annoying they use an crappy motor on the fan that makes an noise before the Air does

what would be cool if they fitted the GTX480 cooler (or like it size wise) on the GTX465 as that should be good at staying an an Quite level (even at load my 480 it not very noisy at all unless i put my Head next to it then yes it is louder then the system)

I also got the MSI 1GB 460 Cyclone OC 725mhz for $234 on Amazon shipped by Tigerdirect merchant with no tax or shipping. :) I prefer the internal cooling since this HSF makes the card much cooler then the traditional external exhaust. I have a side fan blowing on the cards with the power supply at the bottom of the case sucking out some of the heat in that area. The fans on these are extremely quiet.

This MSI 460 seems to be the one that overclocks the most with the lowest temperatures.
Guru3d did a decent overclock of 885mhz w/ volt with it: http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-geforce-gtx-460-cyclone-oc-1024-review/19
They were able to get the 768MB version up to 927mhz w/ volt as well: http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-460-review/24
____A similar 927mhz core clock by another brand shows it compared to a stock 480: http://www.guru3d.com/article/pov-geforce-gtx-460-tgt-ultra-charged-review/20

Seeing it get close to a 480 @ stock performance is pretty impressive for only costing half as much even with less memory+bandwith. And as [H] has shown, they out perform dual 5870s since Xfire scaling is so horrible with ATI 10.7 drivers. Kyle's review was only OC'd to 810mhz though, imagine comparing the 460 @ 900mhz. Plus you have better DX11 performance as well(tessellation).

If a 495 ever appears, it will probably be using dual gf104s since their power/performance ratio is phenomenal.

Basically, your options are:
1) External Exhaust or Reference Cooler
2) -AR(lifetime Warranty) or -TR (2 year warranty)
3) Superclocked or Non Superclocked

the cooler is pretty quiet below 50% fan, but anything above that gets loud. its not super loud, if you wear headphones you shouldnt notice it. should have gone with the non oced card with a lifetime warranty for the same price and oced it yourself, but thats just my opinion.

I just ordered the version with 2 year warrenty: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130567

Just one for now and going to SLI once i get some more money.

Pretty excited, however, I have been reading of reports about noise problems with these cards? does anyone have this problem?

If you wanted to avoid the noise problem, you should have gotten the model with the reference cooler:

That, or else get this Gigabyte card:

You can still change your order, it probably won't ship until the end of the day.

The Palit Sonic Platnium 460 1GB has stock clocks of 800/1600/4000 pretty much the best stock clocks out of any of the brands. I ordered one from newegg for $249.99 CND.

Palit's been doing the bait & switch with review samples, so quite a few people would deal with them as a last resort.

Nvidia didn't include the VRM heatsinks on their reference design for the 460, and many other manufactures (MSI for one), also didn't place heatsinks on the VRM's.

yes but other manufacturers didnt lie with pictures about the product that they were shipping out.

Keep us updated. I'm looking to possibly buy one of the EE 460's as well and I'm interested in what the noise is like... ;)

I bought this card about a month ago, and the thing is the noise is a very weird whirring noise. On inspection of the card, the back portion (where the fan resides), is left unsecured. There are no mounting screws, so the shroud does not make contact with the pcb at the rear. As such I tried rubber banding the end of the shroud and the pcb together, and voila the whirring noise is gone completely. You can test it on yours by pushing the shroud's back end and the pcb together to see if it fixes the problem.

I was looking at these cards to start off with but decided against it. The Gigabyte and MSI 460s seem to have a much better reputation on newegg and various forums. If your case has decent fans, I'd go with the internal based cooling (not external venting), just because of the noise.

Good info. I'm not purchasing right away but the 460 is in my sights as a possible upgrade and I like rear exhaust EE cards.

If you can snap a picture and add to the thread for permanent record that would be appreciated.

finally got my card in the mail the other day, (EE 1gb superclocked) and with headphones on i cannot hear the card at all while playing games. at idle it is silent. i really think people are misinterpreting 'louder than a reference card" to mean "really loud" when in fact it is still relatively quiet. i will have to try that rubberband trick and see if that completely eliminates the fan noise.

Perhaps some subjective comparisons to well known cards in similar segment (such as GTX260 reference) would be valuable.

Should I get the 768MB version or get the 1024MB version? I am interested in EVGA brand. Thanks!
