Every five or ten years or so 3D movies are “all the rage” and the industry goes crazy making 3D crap, only to have 3D totally die off for another five to ten years. Seriously folks, this has been the cycle for the last 50 years, I’m not sure why they act so surprised…every…single…time...this happens.

“The studios are guilty of short-term thinking,” says Brandon Gray, president of Box Office Mojo, which tracks film box-office performance. “They all jumped on the 3D bandwagon but they’re avoiding the real issue, which is their bankruptcy regarding storytelling.”

Some movies are cool in 3D. Most, however, are not. I'm already pretty sick of just about every movie I go to now having to be in 3D. I was VERY happy Inception was not in 3D.

Avatar was the only movie I've seen that really made good use of 3D. Pretty much everything else I've avoided seeing in 3D. Watching 3D movies at BestBuy made me not want to watch 3D stuff at home.

Nail this is hammer, hammer this is nail.

Oh look at that, he hit you right on the head. :p

Other than Avatar which actually looked strikingly better on 3D, its all just a fad. Two-three $ more a ticket so I can wear some crappy glasses? No thanks.

I've always felt that the computer generated material is best viewed in 3D. There is something a little odd about the way live actors are presented in 3D. I'm not sinking any money into 3D for the moment.

If the films are actually made for 3d, and not tacked on at the last minute, or specially done as a gimmick then maybe I'll go see it, but I'm not going to pay an extra $4 for a gimmick. It's bad enough paying $10.50 for a regular ticket.

This.

When films are made for it they work amazingly well. Avatar is a great example. How about (don't laugh) shark boy and lava girl? I must have watched that a bazillion times with my son and it rarely got old.

However, when I was watching movies that were previewing normally when Avatar came out, and then 2 months later they were "Now in 3D" I knew there would be problems.

I like a lot of the animated movies in 3D, but most of the live-action ones blow, with the exception of Avatar. Even done properly though, I wouldn't want to see every movie in 3D. It definitely gets to be annoying when it's overused.

I hate 3D. I certainly don't want a 3D TV nor would I pay extra to see it in 3D in a theater.

I hope it dies.

Everyone ignores the fact that there has never been a movie in actual real 3D. Since 3D first came out it has been nothing but optical trickery simulating 3D images. That's why it keeps failing. Real 3D would have to be at least a non interactive holodeck kind of technology and we are quite far off from having that.

It's probably because they're not using native 3D cameras like most right now are 2D to 3D conversion which makes it really crappy looking.

Up was also rather awesome in 3D. The storyline was great too.

Or like a stage musical?

I saw avatar in 3D and I saw Shreck, Avatar was great and didn't give me too many problems, a few times it did force focus that I didn't want but not too bad. Shreck on the other had is a great example of a movie that it felt tacked on and honestly could have done just as well without it. I don't really remember that movie in 3D where as avatar I can remember parts in hyper real 3D and parts that don't seem 3D in my memory but have depth.

Now I will say this. There is only ONE thing 3D is good for so far. Because its believed that 3D can not be pirated, the movie its self is considered protected and you get to see the film without artificial defects which I out of all my friends always see in movies. I swear, they are up to F-ing barcodes in films now!

In closing, poop, and poop in 3D will sell just the same.

You reminded me of Voyager and when they learned about 20th century soap operas :D

Personally tho, when i watch a soap opera, i'd rather just be sitting down in my living room rather than walk all over the city literally following the plot.:p

Loved Avatar, but just saw Despicable Me in 3d. The best 3d in the entire movie was when they were goofing around with it after the credits, the rest of the movies 3d was mediocre.

Same for gaming. I find that traditional shooters or RPG's benifit little from it, but 3d puzzle games are a lot more fun now.

Assassins Creed The Movie... In Holodeck 3D!!!

Hope you're in good shape.

It's like the State Fair. Once in awhile (every year in the Fair's case) everyone has to race to get in on some fun. Then after awhile everything goes back to normal. :p

To hard on my eyes.
I'm going to assume this was a Freudian slip and direct you to the thread on 3D porn:

I thought the rollercoaster was quite well done. The claw marks on my arm say my daughter thought so too.

The only reason they are pushing it so hard is because it adds a couple dollars to ticket prices, just like how more and more "IMAX" theaters keep popping up. More money for the industry.

For example, in my home town of Kansas City:
Normal movie: $10 for adult ticket
Imax Movie: $14
3D Movie: $14
In 3D and Imax: $19

Movies that are worth it to see in Imax and/or 3D....1 out of 10.

The biggest problem I see with the whole 3D craze is that Avatar has set the bar so high I don't think any movie will ever match its 3D spectacle for another 10 years.

Hollywood needs to stop make a law they will stop doing 2D to 3D conversions. They're just cruel.

Well... except for Star Wars. Invest 200m in that conversion and I'm sure Lucas would get it right.

No he wouldn't. And he would probably add things that weren't part of the original purely for the 3D effect.

+1

The 3D craze caused too many action movies to do dodgy last minute 3D conversions (e.g. clash of the titans). If you have 3D source footage (e.g. avatar, or anything computer generated such as pixar films) then it works great.

I don't think we'll ever go back to 2D only. When 3D stops being so expensive (due to needing to buy new camera's, etc) then I suspect most stuff will get recorded in 3D. You'll still be able to watch it in 2D if you like, but it'll also be available in 3D.

This is going to be partly driven by the need to get people to go to the cinema - I mean I have a huge TV set and great surround sound setup at home - why pay a fortune to watch a film in the cinema when I can just rent it on bluray a few months later for 1/4 of the price of one cinema ticket. I can't however watch 3D at home - that means I still have a reason to go and watch the big action flicks in the cinema.

Duh. I don't think many want or need this nonsense.

3D was just the latest buzz word the industry thought up to increase sales on technology that was becoming very toaster-ish.

Most have a flat-panel of some sort and those that don't are waiting for prices to come down even further, not more expensive due to some 3D bullshit.

And with all the money being spent on the 3D eye-candy, the movies can't help but suffer in other important ways. There's only so much of it to go around for each production.

I don't know about everyone else, but my mind has evolved to the point where I can more or less see 3d in any movie/tv show. Just a little something called perspective, you see one person half the size of another, either it's a midget or they're farther away, someone is walking by an object and all of a sudden you can't see that object, that object is farther away.

Charge $3 for a 25 cent pair of "special" glasses, yeah this is a big money making scheme, one movie was good in 3D in the last.. I dunno 30 years, and everyone wants to get in on that band wagon.

A shit movie in 2D is still a shit movie in 3D.

Uh, I think you just described the concept of "focus", and cameras (2D or otherwise) have that same feature/limitation.

If you find you are only able to see objects in the immediate center of your field of view, I'd check to see if your retina is detaching, or something. My not-as-evolved mind has a feature called peripheral vision. :D

It's a rare movie that's worth paying $10 for. It's just easier to wait till it comes out on Netflix.

Jumping up to $13+ for crappy 3D makes it even less likely I'll go see it. Avatar was the exception because everyone I know said I needed to see it in 3D. It's easier to just wait a week or two so some of your friends can 'filter' the movies for you. Spend the money on movies that are actually worth seeing. The rest you can watch on Netflix in 4 or 5 months.

Has Lucas done anything right since 1983?

There's been a few, like Spy Kids 3D, and more recent Tron, Transformers 3 and Resident Evil, but to my knowledge no one has shot an an entire film in 3D for a variety of reasons, mostly being due to limited storage and size (Most are using the Pace-Cameron Fusion Camera System which uses two Sony HDC-F950 HD cameras)

I don't know if I'm killing a joke or something just made for fun but it can give you some irritation. One of the things I noticed is that the film being faux 3d and not real 3d wil force focus on you. They want you to look at the object in the foreground and and they will focus on it, you may consciously or subconsciously want to focus on something and try but only strain your eyes. Also with focus and aperture, it may also be forced on you to where you can not focus as you normally would and once again you eyes will try to adjust and cause strain.

Yeah! Its just the gay glasses you have to wear! Most people hat them and to be honest with your regular movies dont look that great anyway. I like the cartoons etc. but again my kids hate to wear the glasses. ;)
