Got a free 8GB iPod touch today brand new so I'm assuming it's 2G. Should I upgrade to OS 4.0 or just keep it at 3.1.3?

I inherited an iPhone 3G (which uses the same internals as the 8gb touch) and OS 4.0 was horrible on it. A lot of people experienced slow downs and stuff. I wouldn't recommend it. But you could always try it and revert back if you don't like it.

You'll get no better performance with 4.0 that's for sure. If it's got the shiny chrome backing and the oval black antenna cover it's the 2nd gen model since there is no 3rd gen 8GB. Unless you have something compelling for the 4.0 upgrade, meaning there's something that 4.0 has as a feature the 8GB 2nd gen model is capable of (since most of the goodies require a 3rd gen iPod touch), don't bother with it.

Definitely jailbreak and backup your SHSH blobs at cydia first so you have the option to back to 3.1.3. Then I say go for it and try it out. All the apps that need it seem to be updated to properly support 4.0.

Do NOT do it. I friend of mine has a 8GB iPod Touch second gen and IOS4 ruined it. It's now super sluggish and the battery life is abysmal! Stay with 3.1.3.

My 8 gig touch runs pretty good with ios4 but I can only go about a day on the battery now

Wow, that's weak. My parents just got one of those 8GB iPod touches with their iMac purchase... I assumed if I put 4.0 on it they could multitask... didn't realize they are still giving away old 2g ones.

Actually, there is no 16GB 3rd gen, but the 8GB 3rd gen sells for around $195

And yes, iOS4 on iPods are terrible, they slow it down so much that playing many games is near impossible. Video playback also stutters and it takes an exceedingly long time to load webpages.

You must have meant to say 'older' or something in there. I havea 64gb iPod touch and it runs great with iOS4 on it. I haven't had any of the issues you mentioned. The only thing I noticed was reduced battery life which I hope they fix. It seems to be related to the wifi. Luckily it isn't too much of an issue for me. If I put it in Airplane mode (which I almost always did/do when I am not surfing on it) the battery life is as good as it was with the old OS.

But yeah if you have an older model I wouldn't upgrade. A friend of mine has had plenty of issues with the new OS on his older model iPhone. Newer ones seem to do just fine with it though.

I have a 2nd gen ipod that I got for free for buying my macbook, it came preinstslled with ios4, and runs excellently...

Consider yourself lucky.

It would appear that most of the issues were fixed with 4.1, but I still see several reports of people claiming that certain apps are stuttering in 4.x when they were smooth in 3.1.3

The 64 gig 3rd gen ipod touch uses the same hardware as the iPhone 3Gs, while the 32 and 8 gig versions have the iPhone 3G hardware. iOS4 runs best on 3GS or iPhone 4

Just for the record there is no such thing as a "3rd gen 8GB iPod touch" - they're all 2nd gen models, and only the 32GB and 64GB models now currently selling have the actual 3rd generation features (and therefore are the only ones to get most of the benefits from iOS 4 like multitasking, etc) - that's the reason the original suggestion I made was don't even bother unless there's something else in iOS 4 that the OP might like to use. None of the "really good stuff" applies to that 2nd gen model he just picked up.

Now, come 2 weeks or so when Apple has their Sept 7th event, the rumors and speculation are already flying that we'll finally see the iPod touch gain a camera and potentially other goodies as well (FM radio, maybe?).

Always seems like they do that "free iPod" thing right about now - and I know it coincides with school seasons but, that's probably also why they then do the September events right after it. Use the sales of the desktops + free iPods to get rid of all the old stock as much as possible to make room for the new models...
