Most serious gamers will always take the newest and best technology out there. Well, maybe not when it comes to wireless mice. Serious gamers have hangups on the wireless technology when dealing with their most important piece of equipment.

Logitech has taken a bold step by releasing a wireless gaming mouse, but there remain huge doubts from professional gamers that even the most advanced technology is reliable enough. Microsoft has already tested wireless gaming mice through its Sidewinder range, and Logitech's latest G700 will be considered a desirable piece of gaming kit by many. But for the top echelons of gamers, and the much bigger group of serious gamers that care greatly about their kit, wireless still brings major doubts.

"real men" don't cry, either. But I willl admit to having dropout issues with all of my wireless mice, though I chalk that up to buying cheap wireless mice...

There is no real point. Not like a serious gamer is gonna be sitting on his couch gaming. There are only negatives to moving to a wireless mouse for a serious gamer.

Personally, I have no need for a wireless mouse. I don't have problems with cords snagging and my mouse is always on a stationary surface.

The only reason i switched back to a wired mouse is because too often would the batterys run out mid game and then i realise i dont have any chagred and have to go hunt for some disposable ones (often resorting to stealing them from other devices)

i am not a "serious" gamer but to me i never saw or felt any difference ingame between wired or wireless

I've never liked wireless mice. Their range was always terrible (getting worse as the battery level dropped) and the batteries would die in the middle of games.

I'm a pro gamer and I use a Razer Mamba. This article is now defunct.

My TF2 team placed 2nd in Canada 2008 as an average of the two larges TF2 tournaments in Canada in 2008, Fragapalooza and Lanageddon.

IMO though, the Mamba is the only wireless mouse worth using for pro gaming.

Oh and the reason I use a wireless is because I can't stand when my mouse gets snagged on something, especially in a key battle. Fuck that shit.

I used to use a Logitech MX Revolution and I never had a problem with it unless I forgot for several days to charge it overnight. It didn't offer a particular advantage to me by being wireless but I liked the button layout so it was perfect.

I was using the MX Revolution for gaming till I tried the Razer Diamondback 3g, then I noticed the input lag MX Revo had going back. Since then I picked up the Mamba (as mentioned above) and that input lag doesn't exist. It really is as if it were wired, and it is convertible to wired too if I run out of power!

I wonder if it would be any good if we do manage to get "wireless power" going to get the mouse pad to be the power source and a wireless mouse constantly charged? I should get a patent!

While I wouldn't consider myself a competition gamer - I play to have fun, and only compete with myself - I consider myself a serious gamer. I moved to Logitech wireless with the older MX700, and hung in with them up to the MX1000. Never had a single drop-out. Never ran out of charge even after hours and hours of play. When the MX700 was released, corded mice suddenly had to play catch up. It was built like a tank, too. Then they moved to that piece of crap metal wheel, and the internals got so bad in quality that the drop offs in signal happened often. Went through several replacements.

Now I'm back on wired mice.

I see his point, but my point is that the manufacturers are failing us now. Not the technology. There is NO reason why a 10 year old mouse should be still kicking around when a 1 year mouse has been replaced 3 times in that one year.

But then you would need a cord for your mouse pad...

Besides that, everyone will sue you and claim the mouse pad caused their carpal tunnel syndrome or cancer.

Apparently TechRadar missed Logitech's G7 wireless gaming mouse that was put out around 5 years ago.
Like others, I'm not a "serious" gamer, but I never had any problems with dropout and battery swapping was a matter of seconds.

still havent hopped on the wireless mouse bandwagon. On my gaming rig at least, everything else is wireless.

Yeah I was disappointed with this mouse. I have a G9 and it's been flawless over the years. Sure there are instances where wireless mice are probably good, but I've never had a need. I had a Logitech wireless mouse back in 2003 or something, and that was decent but the issue with that was corrosion of my charging contacts. While that's not really an issue now, I didn't find any advantage to wireless, and a few times the mouse was accidentally knocked off my desk/lost. As far as snags, if you have a decent setup without a whole lot of clutter, a wire shouldn't cause any problems.

Logitech should release both a wired and wireless version. I know you can plug this in to charge, but detachable cables only add another possible breaking point.

I just got 2 new G500's and will likely never go wireless. I've had a couple and neither lasted more than 2 weeks.

i'm such a pr0 gamer, 2 ms of input lag in world of warcraft would make me look like a total n00b. I also have one of those gaming network cards that go for 200 bucks.

no, i'm kidding, but for me it's not so much reliability. i hate it when the batteries die. and they always do at the worst moment. also, there is not a single argument in favor of wireless mice, at least for me. the cable doesn't bother me at all. i have a large desk, the cable has never been in the way and there's already enough wireless crap that transmits in my vincinity which may be unhealthy (pending results of scientific research).

Serious gamers still use crt monitors.

Wireless mouses are crap because they need batteries simple as.

I loved my Logitech MX1000. Never had drop outs, the charge lasted for hours of play for several days even after years of use and I loved the ergonomics and button placement. Why did I have to retire it? Well, it got so much use I had worn the feet down, my thumb and pinky finger had worn the paint off on each side and my palm had worn off the Logitech logo, and the charging contacts were starting to wear and getting it charging in the cradle was getting tricky. After several years of heavy use the buttons were all solid, the battery still held days of charge, and the wireless was no problem at all.

I tried the MX1100 and MX Revolution and found those to both be inferior craftsmanship to the MX1000. Shoddy build quality, poor signal range, and I felt the ergonomics were a step down, all in all, they both totally disappointed me.

Since then I decided to try the MX Performance and I can say the build quality seems to have gone back up. I'm not sure it surpasses my retired MX1000, but its a good mouse. Battery lasts days, wireless is great, it feels solid.

I have used teh MX700, the G7, and now the Mamba.

I don't understand people complaining about the batteries dying mid match. The G7 and Mamba have battery indicators on them. Anyone playing with one learns to start the day with a fresh charge, especially on days when there will be a lot of gaming. In 7 years, I have never had one of these three mice die in middle of a game.

The person talking about the mouse's range getting worse as the battery charge gets lower, this would only be an issue in an extremely poorly designed mouse. Voltage regulation and battery chemistry is way different than it was when wireless mice first appeared. If this was an issue, it would mainly be an issue is using Alkaline batteries and only then if the mosue wasn't regulating the voltage. For NiMH and lithium based batteries, it would have to be the very end of the battery life before you saw decreased range. At that point youwould be more at risk of losing power mid-match.

Interference can be an issue however, though this is really only an issue when sitting across the room.

Wireless lag is up for debate.

My MX5000 compared to my G500, I'll take the G500 for gaming. The wireless is for browsing the web from my couch on the big screen. There is certainly noticeable lag between the two, perhaps fancier more expensive wireless mice are better but the cost isn't worth it to me.

With the exception of my MX1000, I don't use wireless-anything.

When that mouse goes, I will probably move back to a wired mouse. I'd rather deal with cables than batteries.. although the MX1000 is great because the battery indicator is always on when it is in use.

Are we talking about Counter Strike Source gamers with 8800GTXs and CRT monitors?

The great thing about the Mamba and G700, they both can be used in wired mode. Go figure.

Can't stand wireless mice, i use a wired mice and a wired keyboard, and it will stay that way.

I'm too old to be a 'serious gamer', but I did feel a noticeable difference between the wireless MX610 and the wired M500 when it came to improving my reaction times - my KDR in APB went up like WTF.

i had a mx700 too. it was great but not flawless, sometimes you would get the the 360 spin after moving it like it was having trouble tracking. then the batteries would not hold a charge, and even with new rechargeables or just standard batteries it would die super fast. I tried 2 wireless keyboards and and a ms mouse and it was all junk, either constant interference from something or just dropping the signal, was so bad you could not prime a nade in game, it would just release the nade even though the button was depressed. The key lag was also horrible. type and wait for it to show up. So i don't trust any of the ones out now still.

my cords do snag all the time so its a pain, i keep the keyboard on my lap and the mouse cord just stays a little too stiff with the braided cord to move it sometimes. but compared to the wireless hassles, ill pass till a rock solid setup comes out.

I still love using my corded Logitech G5 (blue version), in spite of the fact that it is now like 3 years old. I have all the heavier weights for the adjustment installed, and that alone makes virtually every other mouse feel light and cheap.

I don't know what I would do if my G5 broke :( lol

Serious gamers still use crt monitors.

Agreed.

I love my MX Revolution and my MX1100, both of which are wireless. But then again, I wouldn't consider myself hardcore anymore, and I'm not into as many FPSs either.

Wireless mice have had zero lag for the last several generations of products. I used a MX700 while dominating in Cal M and use a G7 now. While I don't play in leagues any more, I have no problem throwing up 10:1 K:D ratios in pubs with my G7.

My only issue with wireless mice is the added weight - Give me a wireless mouse that's shaped like and has the same weight as a Death Adder and I'm sold.

"serious" "gamer"... sounds like an oxymoron to me.. i do all my pc gaming with my wireless xbox controller... i don't care if i get pwnd by a newb.. gay ass internet bitches...

I agree if you're in to serious competition, it's wired all the way, but for most of us it will never matter. I frequently use my mouse from over 15 feet away, so wired would be an issue for me.

Well, I am a great gamer however I been using wireless mouse for a long time. I do notice input lag but internet speed also causes lag. If your good enough you can overcome those problems.

Hell before my mouse conflicted with my 33.6k modem back in the days. Yet I still do as good or better than people with both mouse and keyboard while I was just playing with keyboard only.

I can't do that now but that just shows you can adapt if you are missing sometimes.

When I changed mouse from a mx700 to a microsoft sidewinder x8. I really notice what input lag was. It allowed me to awp a better because the delay becomes even less. There are so many factors in gaming online, the most important is lat in my view and not that wireless mouse sucks.
