Apple says it is working on a fix for the recently discovered iPhone browser security hole. Hey, while they are at it, maybe they can fix iOS 4 so it doesn’t slow 3G and 3GS phones to a crawl.

On Wednesday an Apple spokeswoman said in a statement, "We're aware of this reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an upcoming software update." Apple declined to say when the update would be pushed out.

3G phones don't crawl with iOS 4, they barely drag themselves along the ground in misery, using their teeth to grip it.

Slowing 3GS phones to a crawl? News to me, my 3GS actually works better.

Of course you're 3GS is working. Your holding the phone correctly.

No app stuttering? Blurry photos? Safari blank page freak outs? Porn downloads slower than normal?

None for me...my 3gs is faster than ever. Also recently (2 days ago) did the jailbreakme...and only notice is slight slowdown while in Cydia, but not w/ the phone in general.

My wife's 3G took a huge nose dive. The FF2 app went from butter smooth to compeltly unplayble. A lot of stuff works like crap on it. This and several other Apple and ATT bullshit moves have pushed me to buying a driodX next week when my contract is up.

My 3G is almost unusably slow, it often takes 3 or 4 swipes just to answer a call now. It pisses me off no end that Apple haven't done something to fix this yet - the BASIC FUNCTIONALITY of the phone is compromised. I can live with slower games and that type of thing, but I can't live with missing calls, though looking at Apple's behaviour recently it's hardly surprising they haven't addressed it. I tried rolling back my firmware to 3.1.3 but despite all the guides online, it's actually impossible to have a phone capable of making calls after, due to the baseband getting upgraded in 4.0 (I don't have the older version where you can downgrade the baseband with Fuzzyband). I'm sure Apple could engineer an easy fix to downgrade but they seem more intent on trying to thwart carrier unlocks rather then have a usuable product. F you, Jobs.

My 3GS has had quite a few problems since the update. Web browsing is slower, os and apps lag, the camera takes forever to open and close.

Well I think the PDF warning in cydia is enough of a fix for me, I'll just stick with that.

cant believe they admitted it was a security hole on the browser. I was pretty sure it was a feature :D

My 3g was skippy when I upgraded to OS4...for the first day. Now, when I try to send an email, the autocomplete bar takes 10 seconds to pull up the contact I'm looking for. Email sometimes doesn't go out at all and sits in the Out box for a while. I had to disable threaded email because it was filling my inbox with a ton of blank emails for some reason. You can get some performance back temporarily if you power down the phone and do a cold boot. However, I never had to power the thing down before. I refuse to power cycle it every day just because they can't release a decent version of the OS. I'd love to downgrade, but everyone says that you'll never be able to get the phone back to the way it was before.

iOS4 started out a little bumpy for me. WeatherBug, Facebook app, and viewing some of my Contacts would crash back to home screen, and about 4 out of 12 of my games didn't work, but app developers were quick to update the past 2-3 weeks and iOS4.0.1 fixed the Contacts crash. So I'm happy overall.

It's like Windows. It'll be a little bumpy out of the gate, but with a little patience (and occasionally some nudging to apps developer on their App Store review page), everything'll be fine.

I'm a 3GS user. I can't speak for 3G users.

what do you mean by that? I don't think that you'll be able to restore your text messages or anything like that, but you should be able to reload your contacts, email, apps and photos just fine

If you're seeing bad performance, it's probably worth while for you to downgrade.

I trawled many, many guides about downgrading. I'm 64bit Windows based and the USBlib hoses your USB ports, even in safe mode (I'm aware there's a 64bit fix but that didn't work on my system either). The only way I could get it back to normal was booting with a PS2 keyboard and uninstalling the USB driver (I can't speak for the Mac users using Recboot). All these guides say ignore the 1015 error - but that error means the baseband isn't compatible with the installed firmware which means no phone calls. If you look through the comments on these guides, you'll find most people say it doesn't work - in fact, a lot of these guides look cut and pasted from one particular guide and nobody has bothered doing their research. But please somebody prove me wrong, I'd love to be able to rid my phone of 4.0!

have you jailbroken it before? If so, you can easily revert to a prior firmware by editing your hosts file when you restore it back to whatever SHSH version cydia has stored .

I cannot confirm that lifehacker guide unfortunitly, but I know for a fact that you're able to with the above scenario

The 3G doesn't need SHSH blobs to restore to anything before 4.0 and I found I only needed to edit my hosts file when upgrading my friend's Touch from 3.0 to 3.1.3

really? I wasn't aware of that. So shouldn't anyone with a 3G be able to downgrade their firmware without any issues? Or is it an issue with the baseband not properly downgrading?

I wonder if people can use something like pwnage tool to downgrade then... I know you can install a custom firmware that doesn't touch the baseband with it.

Well, if you do get stuck with OS4.0 on the 3G, there is another way to get it speedy again, if only for a little while. Go to:

Settings->General->Reset->Reset all settings

After the reset, everything will be fast for about a whole week. It doesn't get rid of any apps, data, or pictures. But, it resets your network settings and the home button setting. It's annoying to have to do that, so I only do it when I get pissed at the phone.

It's an issue with the baseband. If your phone has bootloader 5.08 or older, you can downgrade the baseband with Fuzzyband, otherwise you're SOL - have a look at jailbreakmatrix.com to see how the firmware/bootloader/baseband are linked. I think the people that were able to downgrade successfully were the ones that installed a custom firmware which left the baseband intact in the first place.

UPDATE There's a new version of Recboot that works without LibUSB on Win7 systems - finally back at 3.1.3 with the newest baseband and working fine!
