Network pics thread

buy a wall mout rack, throw all the switches and servers in the garage

While reading through this I can only imagine all the dead insects and dust that would accumulate inside after 6 months (and I have a pretty clean garage).

Thinking about the dust issue, does anyone here do anything special to prevent dust buildup in their home network equipment? I have the equip elevated about 6" off the floor and have 2x air purifiers in my apt but still end up having a reasonable amount of dust in servers after a few months.

Screen filters for your door if you can. Don't keep the door open without it...they work wonders, especially the mini ones in Antec P180 cases. Didn't have to clean inside it for nearly a year...And do you have any dust mats like these?:http://www.datacentersuperstore.com/. Although it may not be a full blown data center it does help :)

@Blue fox, i saw a guy here in Calgary selling a celestix box like that. A Scorpio II, wanted to get it for a buddy, but i couldn't tell or find out if it had 1000's or 100's. the screen was all green not as dark as yours looks like...what speed are yours?

They were selling an older model of what I have. That box has 8 x 1gbit if I remember correctly. I was going to buy it actually, but they wanted $50 shipping to the US. I got a much better deal on mine (and it's new with warranty/support and not EoL like the other), so I bought it instead. The screen isn't really dark at all...the camera flash is to blame. The NICs on mine are also gigabit (and Intel). Mine is 775/DDR2/SATA vs the other one which is 478/DDR1/IDE. If you have any other questions, I've researched the hardware on these things quite a lot, so I should be able to help.

will have to look on ebay, i didn't see any. Lots of fireboxes tho.
You won't find another for anywhere near that price (and they're not too common on top of that). This is way above any of the Watchguard boxes. I have a Core 2 processor in it for example. If you are looking for a cheap network appliance, I have a couple for sale. What do you plan on running on them?

I'm running Untangle right now, and LOVE IT! might purchase a supermicro dual core 1.6 atom, put 4 gigs ram into it with a 80gig laptop sata drive. Im buying the model with dual intel gig network cards. they are around 329$ for the unit minus ram & hard drive.

The cheap Watchguard boxes you find on eBay definitely won't run that. They're 1.2ghz P3s, so not quite up to it.

Those MSA boxes remind me of something that should belong in a home theater rack... especially that huge knob on the right, can you turn up the volume of the WAN please?

I have one of the black shelving units for bedroom storage. i wanted to get one for my computers but worried that it would not be able to hold the two machines I want to put on it.

After seeing this, I am not so worried. :)

Most of those wire racks are sturdy as hell. Cheap and they work well. Bread Racks FTW!

my previous employer used all 3560's on the edge, I liked those things, great switches.

Goo Gone is the best stuff ever.

Oh hey, cisco switches! ;)

Pluslabs That kicks axis. Now don't go about adding one more switch or it may break the camels back :) is this for a lan party like the Gathering? or maybe a client?

PS: liveify love that rack!

DAMN do you have to config all those switches? how long does that take?

Depends on the deployment. Me and my crew rolled out around 100 of those things in one night when bringing up a new building. You get a solid baseline script and you customize from there.

100 in one night is a hell of a job. How many people where on your crew?

I guess most of the work is prep, like VTP domain, interface desc, ssh, extra...
and having a good tftp server up and running.

Times like that don’t you wish people would have just order a 6500 or 4500 instead of using a regular access switch as a collapsed core, stacking a crap load of switches or worse.... daisy chaining. (THE HORRORS I HAVE SEEN... and NO a dynex 5 port switch does not count as a repeater on a 99.999% network..)

You might try eBay, but they're normally a slight bit higher. Just order from them, they're reputable although their location is kind of shady. Anyone that's been to pick one up in Chicago knows this. LOL!

I am pretty sure thats the only place to get it, but it's worth it.. It's amazing

Im going to order the same one you got... as its exactly what im looking for. How fast are they at processing the order and shipping?

I ordered it on a Sunday, shipped that Monday, and I received it Thursday..

Do you purchase the hardware and then reinstall with your firewall distribution of choice or do you stick with the software that comes with them?

That goes out to anybody that wants to answer :D

Last i checked he still had the Server2003 install on it. I need to roll over to his place and see if I can get a look at it.

Depends on the hardware. This is really the first one where I've stuck with the OS that has come with the unit. I'm liking ISA server and it has a license for Windows Server 2003 too, so hard to pass up. Normally I just dump pfsense on everything I can lay my hands on and call it a day.

Yep. It's spiffy. Going to be gone all week for quakecon though.

Just moved all my home equipment into a much better setup in my basement. $35 wire rack was a much better option to a 24U 4 post rack in terms of cost, and I was really happy with the outcome. I was also happy because now I only have a single switch in my office which makes the noise and heat drastically less.

In about a week there will be a Apple XServe G5 DP joining the rack for some hands on apple development. We are also going to be adding a APC SmartUPS 2200va. I have the batteries fresh from APC, I just need to find a unit on eBay that is in good shape. Once I get the UPS I can get all my power off the floor and thus don't have to worry about my basement flooding.

Looks nice, i like it, the apple X-serves are soo00 cheap to buy on ebay.

Why not use a mac mini ? you know that the g5's are old and no more support for new software and stuff ?

I was going to buy a watch guard, but i really like the fact that Untangle, provides virus spy ware protection to the other machines in my house.

APC power solution is your best purchase :)
