Proof positive that not all happy endings on Craigslist are found in the “therapeutic massage” section. Thanks to Railhaus for the link. :D

Steven started with an old cell phone and eventually traded up to his impressive ride. It didn't happen overnight, but with the help of the Craigslist website and a lot of patience, Steven made 14 online swaps over two years to get his 2000 Porsche Boxster S.

$15,000 for a Bronco? I wouldn't pay that much for them, but then again I'm a car guy. I don't care much for trucks.

I wonder if I can trade my Maxima for a Porsche. It has a KBB private-seller value of $13,500.

I would have kept the phone instead of owning what is the equivalent of a poor mans Porsche, just $2k short of a proper 911.

He may have gotten a chick car but think of what you were driving at 17. I know I would rather drive a poor man's Porsche than my Plymouth horizon.

You guys might call it a chick car, but it still has 250HP and weighs around 2600LBs. I bet they are a blast to drive. I'd take it.;)

Color me impressed.

Impressed that he didn't get an under-the-table or minimum wage job and just save up for one.. Wouldn't have taken more than two years and would have had job experience under his belt. Maybe even lose a few pounds.

You could have read the article...like where it mentions he had lost his job.

Sure, he could have flipped burgers or pumped gas or moved boxes from point A to B I guess, if he was lucky enough to snag another job, but how far is that 'experience' going to take somebody? Does anyone even put minimum wage jobs on their resume when not looking for another minimum wage (or close to it) job? I have worked a few in my life and I promise you they are nowhere near mine.

What the kid did is pretty damned impressive.

I keep seeing this article posted everywere and quite frankly its pissing me off a little.

He claims to work X ammount of hours per day for two years and has a $10,000 Porsche to show for it. If he worked a minimum wage job and saved his money he couldve bought two of the Porsches.

Pwned.

There are more jobs out there. It's not too hard to find jobs as a 17 year old or however old he is.

And how old are you? Exactly. A teenager would be putting minimum wage jobs down to get ahead of the competition.

I think the fact that he didn't have to work his ass off to get it is irritating all of you.

The dude looks like he is way older than 17.That's what craiglist can do to you.

This kid would've split school and work (with limited work hours for a minor) like a mofo to afford even one Boxter. Not at all bad.

Yeah, and I traded my penny for a cold coin... These myths are just that. Or, there might be more to the story than is revealed to us. May be he put in work and money into each bike/car etc.

I'd take the Boxster, then sell it privately or trade-in toward a new mustang.

Year 2000 Porsche? Super pass.

Year 2010 Porsche? Super pass.

Listen to Jeremy Clarkson on BBC's Top Gear... we think one of a like.

He should have stuck with the Bronco.

there's only one word to summarize a Porsche of so little value: salvage

And the maintenance cost on those things. A basic oil change costs between $200-300 and the 60,000 mile check up costs around $2,000-3,000. Which you can not do yourself since the engine is mounted at the bottom of the car.

I was considering buying a Boxster for $15,000, 39,000 miles clean history. Until I saw the maintenance cost.

Give the guy some credit for the effort. As for Porshe, it's for people who have money. Like Chombo said, maintenance is crazy expensive for these and god forbid it breaks down. It's a 10 year old car so whoever had wanted to unload it. As for cost, Porshe's don't hold value that well and this one was 40k to begin with. I guess if it's in decent shape 10k seems fair, despite all of this, I sure as hell would love to have this when I was 17.

I bet it a old boxter

still not bad.

(wouldn't ever own a boxter)

Drive it like you stole it and when it breaks leave it like its stolen.

Only proper thing to do with a Porsche, or give it to a very hot lady friend for some high caliber booty.

id rather have an old cell phone than drive a chick car

Clearly you no nothing about cars.

The Boxster is one of the best handling sports cars on earth. In many ways it is better than a 911 and Porsche keeps the power down so it doesn't eat the 911's lunch.

The only reason I wouldn't want a Boxster is the expense.

From the photo it looks like it has some damage on the front left near the light.

At least the Boxster won't be plotting its murder attempt on your life unlike a 911 will.

so resourceful to trade up to a porsche yet he can't change the oil and has to pay 150$ to someone to do it.........

the news make it sound like great news, but hey the world is full of stupid people and i wouldn't take on a 10yr old porsche because it is a money pit.
The kid had no life for 2 yr looking for "great deals" on craigslist i guess it works for some but not for the rest.

You can't realistically change your own oil on a Boxster. The engine is mounted at the bottom of the car below the seats. You essentially have to remove the engine just to change the oil. As a result its also going to cost closer to $300 than $150.

He could have easily done it in one year @ minimum wage. Was impressed until I read he was at it for 5-6 hours a day for two years and that the Porsche was only worth 9k.

I've got a 911 c4, but wrenched on a 986 before. You do need to get under the car to change the oil and filter, but nothing crazy about it. Jack it up enough that you can roll under it. A filter and just about a case of synthetic oil, you are good to go. The drain plug is on the bottom of the engine, but I've yet to own anything where that was not the case.

While some of the stuff might be a bit of a tight fit, generally, stuff is very mechanic friendly. I've come to really like the German engineering - as in stuff goes together in a sensible fashion.

(The same was so not true, back when I owned a Jaguar XJS with the v12. Whomever thought out how stuff is supposed to bolt together was smoking some serious crack. Nothing was just easy.)

There is no way to tell whether some of the business offers he had offered as trade were profitable, but when I read a story about a guy who's lost his job, and who's father's business is in the shitter being offered turnkey businesses in trade and instead takes a Porsche, I don't see a smart kid.

I'm out of work, let's get an Escalade.

didnt someone one time trade a big red paperclip for a house in a similar fashion ?

Jealousy rampant in this thread.

No kidding...

I think it's awesome, I do the same thing on Craigslist - unfortunately it's almost always in the opposite direction, I'm good at taking something of value and trading it down and down until I'm left with nothing... :D oh well...

Think the red paperclip is more impressive. Chick car, no thanks. Trade to an Escalade, that's even dumber. Would have rather drove around the Bronco.
