Network pics thread

They are called Cage Nuts... kind of a pain to work with i feel, takes extra time to put them in. Im not sure 100% WHY they are used opposed to threaded holes... possibly to give the end-user an option of 10/32 or the other larger option... maybe cheaper to manufacturer?

I know my dell racks use them. You basically insert the cage nut and then your screw goes throgh your equipment into the cage nut and it holds it in place. Pretty solid actually although they sometimes fall out while installing equipment. I've had to take a drill to them when a screw got stripped going in so thats how secure they are... i prefer pre-drilled 10/32 screw terminals opposed to cage nuts, as i don't have to spend money on cage nuts then (not much like $12 for 50 or so i think i pay but still)

No worries about stripping the threads on your rack and losing a U of space permanently when you have cage nuts...
^^
This is exactly why they use the cadge nuts. if you strip out a hole on a pre-threaded rack you're SOL or you're stuck rearraging equipment/servers which leads to unwanted downtime.

Cage nuts are so much better. Extra vertical play, no useless screw holes from stripped screws.

One word of advice, make sure of the rack you are buying, mine is a really old sound rack that uses 12-24 screws and not 10-32 like newer sound racks. I think most telco style racks are 12-24 though.
I got lucky because my temple was remodeling years ago and the guy said I could the old rack was mine as long as I had a way to get it home. It's been in my basement ever since!

I love the "dell compatible" racks with squares, since as stated, you don't get the issue with stripped screws. If/when I ever buy a rack I'm going with that style.

I got a Compaq rack that had round holes. Kind of a pain to use cage nuts, but not too bad if you have a pair of needle nose.

i use square hole on server racks etc but for patching and comms i used the threaded racks, so much easier as all the kit going in is screw in, no rails. patch panels dont tend to move once they are in so little risk of damaging a thread.

Plus, is the first pic your basement from years ago when you posted pics of the new house?
How do these customers homes connect to your network?

Yes. It's turned into a big mess since then.

I run indoor SMF fiber in PVC conduit. The access switches are in a gigabit loop coming into a 3750G-12S-E at the headend.

Same here, my wife and I need to have a fan in the bedroom at night to sleep. Be it a box fan, oscillating fan, ceiling fan, whatever fan.

Also we freaked out in our office when i powered off the untangle server and 24 port switch. It was annoyingly quiet, like wtf!

hahaha yep same here!

This just in...

That's the Array configuration utility from the IBM boot software. IBM Server Guide I believe is what it's called.

so Olivas, We've got a 48 port patch panel, a 24 port managed switch, connected to a soho router and a standard modem and nothing else in the rack?. gimmeeh more!!!!! What are all those wires going to? :)

ya it's kind of a tease... even an empty rack we know there isn't anything there... but you have wires... and a switch... there has to be something else.. has to...

Ok, more from around the house -

Again, in the basement, can see the Intel NAS that sits off to the side.

And actually only a 24 port patch panel, need to actually dig out the real camera and stop taking picture with my phone.....

Anyhow, currently there's not too much connected to the network, just wanted the room for growth. Got 2 desktops, network printer, PS3, the WDTV, the Intel NAS, and of course, the the D-Link DIR-555 and the Qwest DSL modem. (Wii and laptop on wi-fi, also I guess).

Tight and clean nice! Good work on the concealing of wire too :) some day ill put up some pictures of the stuff i used to do, me being the 120lb guy with the 40 pound dewalt POS drill crawling around on my chest over each rafter was a good day! LOVED IT! NOT! chest was always brused LOL! but the work was fun!

@Olivas, Best install I've seen yet. If only people in IT positions would do that here in Canada, wiring closets would be so much better...Comparing to always cleaning other people's mess to get to your stuff :)

I'm in canada and my work looks like that :)

Wow that is great work Olivas! I'm 100% embarressed to take any pics of my little junk-hole now :)

Beautiful cabeling. Only experience I have in that regard was wiring my brother's Living room for 5.1. Ahh lessons learned. If I ever get a nice house I plan on doing similar.

You need some more shineys for that rack. Even if you don't use them. I'm going to reccomend one of the SuperMicro 1U Atom 510 boxes before DashPuppy beats me to it :)

I'm sure you will beat me to it before i get one, i have to save $$ to buy a new macbook pro. BUT i got lots of work lined up for soon, so i could have one of those 1u Atom 510 machines soon :)

Thx for all the complements guys, something I had always told myself I was gonna do once my wife and I finally got a place of our own. Quite a bit of planning went into the project, and with the help of the father-in-law, was we were able to get it knocked out in a weekends time. All in all only used up about 1/2 of the 1000ft spool of cat6 cabling it got as well, wondering if I should wire up a couple more drops. Maybe to the garage.....

I used to run a full 42U cabinet full of hardware in the garage. Winter time I would get about 40 degrees in there.. summer time 110+ degrees!
