ATT Captivate: Release Date and Pricing

is at&t just selling this phone for cheap to be in good graces with androidfans? for at&t customers will they force a dataplan on it?

A data plan is required with any smart phone on AT&T and they will automatically add one for you.

I went to my local ATT store and they only had a demo unit. I tried calling other stores but nobody else answered :(
 
Anybody from Los Angeles had any chance of picking one up? i called at least 4 stores and i don't think they even heard of it.
 
Even better news? I was reading that some people are even getting these things for $300!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally got in touch with some more stores, none of them will sell until Sunday :(
And none will tell me non contract price either...lame

But the one store I went to with the demo unit let me play with it. There was no sluggish UI issues like a couple people complained so it might just be a bad batch with some of them?
The one I played with also had a different skin downloaded to it and not the stock one. The interface was nice and everything was speedy. The screen size was nice. The rep even let me take the phone outside to test in direct sunlight. I'll admit it wasn't that great in the sunlight, but neither was the iphone4 he let me test. It also sucked to use the touch screen on both phones in the sun because my fingers were getting moist from heat and unable to slide on the screens. I've always had qwerty phones so I'm not sure how I feel about that either. Is it possible a screen protector will be smoother and allow slightly moist fingers to slide much easier?
 
Just bought one. My store had "about a couple" in stock...
$300+tax. WOOT! It freaking costs the same price out of contract as it does in contract iPhone!!!!!!!!!!!!

did you buy that from a an authorized dealer? I just checked and it's $400 at the one near me for non-contract. They said authorized dealers can vary their prices, but all the corporate ones are going to be $400. Authorized retailer ftw lol
 
I've tried calling the store near me, but didn't feel like waiting on hold for God knows how long. Gonna try again before I leave work, since it's on my drive home and see if they have any.

Yep, official ATT store... $299. :D

I just rooted this sucker, too. I can confirm root works I guess (though I haven't figured out how to remove the ATT pre-installed stuff yet). I rooted it and got no errors at least.

In other news, anyone find any cases yet or screen protectors???

Of course if this thing only costs $300 maybe if I bust it it won't cost so much to replace.
 
They already have the cases out and they wouldnt sell me one yet, they said they have it on stock but will have to wait until Sunday. At least they're holding one for me.

You're going to have to go through the Android SDK and the ADB server. Basically command line stuff.
 
ls is the list command. And at least with HTC devices, I just delete the apk, works fine.
 
Can anyone who owns it confirm that there is a notification light a'la Blackberry?
 
so this 8gb captivate is only 300 dollars same as the 32gb iphone4
might have to get it now for backups
 
It has 16 of the gee bees, not 8. Plus you can put up to 32 more of the gee bees in it. In iPhone math, that equals, um, a lot of gee bees, and it has the why fies too. Doesn't print money or grant wishes though.
 
by the way..for those ordering with AT&T and without a contract/plan, are the phone locked to at&t network or I can go and use this with T-mobile or overseas.
 
If the Captivate will be "locked" by AT&T, why bother paying $299 or $349 (whichever you can get at the store) when you can get it for $199 on contract. There is no "off-contract" rate plan discount or decrease w/ AT&T if you own your own phone.

And should you be able to unlock it, the only carrier that you could possibly move to (not sure if this is poss. w/ Captivate) might be T-Mobile.

In my opinion, the cell phone industry in the USA does not reward "purchasers" of cell phones w/ plan discounts....most anyways.......so why bother buying any phones off-plan, especially if they are locked down...

Point in case, look at what we are now hearing about the hardware lockdown of the Droid X.....it will brick itself if the rom is touched....

Anyone?

The ability to change providers really...What happens if you are in a contract?

Or for me, I just bought an iphone 4 to sell for profit. I made money off this whole dealie.
