Question about vzw 3g coverage in nyc

Yesterday I spent the day in NYC around midtown area and I saw that my 3g coverage was HORRIBLE. I could not connect to any website. When I go and check on vzw's website it shows that the entire island of Manhattan is covered in red (meaning good 3g signal). I'm wondering why I couldn't get any signal. I'm using an Incredible. I'm new to the INC and smartphones in general. I would expect a city like NYC to have a lot of good 3g reception and I was amazed as to why I coudn't get any good 3g. That's why I'm not wondering if maybe I have a faulty phone since it doesn't work well in NYC. Do you guys who have vzw get good signal in NYC

Also, I noticed that when I was driving on the NJ turnpike I had really bad 3g service also. Does a moving car distort the service?

I haven't had too many issues with 3G in the city, did you try updating your roaming capabilities (*228)?

I've been to NJ and New York City (midtown Manhattan/Chinatown/Brooklyn/major highways) a couple times since getting the Incredible, and had perfectly find reception and could use network at all times. Stayed connected to meebo, could browse sites, and use Google Navigation the entire time.

I used the Navigation starting on 7th Ave to find my way to Times Square, the wax museum, and MoMA, as well as a bunch of other places, so that should speak well about being able to use it in the city. I've also used it in a moving car driving at 60 mph in a 1600 mile loop, and it had signal and connection almost all the time aside from some time spent in the mountains.
