Guys ... so i have another box i am upgrading

Asus Board, AMD 9850 Black Edition 2.5GHZ @ 3.13ghz, Orb/HS, 8GB DDR2 XMS2, 2x Volciraptor 300GB in Raid0

Currently have 2x 260GTX (216) Core in SLI

.....

Would switching to a single 480GTX be throttled back due to the processor?

No, but it's not going to benefit as much with a phenom with better architecture. Since you're running 2x decent DX10 cards, the benefit overall is going to be moot, unless you want DX 11. I mean, it will benefit you, but nothing overly amazing. IMO. Plus, the 480 runs hotter than hell. I would look at SLIng the new 460's or going an ATi route.

it will bottleneck for most cases, but its really depends on each application.

no point spending 500+ on a video card when you don't have the cpu to back it up. I would invest that money in a better cpu, to do that you will probably need a new board and memory.

+1. The old Phenom 1's are just slow as turtles compared to today's new Intel and AMD cpus.

if the board supports a phenom II and can be overclocked id say upgrade that piece of junk processor to a phenom II 955 C3 and overclock it to 3.4ghz minimum(should do this on stock voltage) preferred 3.6ghz.. the 9850 BE will bottleneck the crap out of the GTX 480.. the phenom I's are a joke..

not always the case.. the majority of AMD am2+ and am2 boards support phenom II processors..
