D-Link DIR-655 - Best Firmware?

Sticking with 1.21 here, tried 1.34 and shareport wasn't worth a damn. Shareport works "ok" with 1.21

If you have recentlly have purchased one, you should have nothing to worry about, it doesnt matter. I have the older model (when it was first released two years ago) and the latest three firmwares made my router nearly worthless. CS said that they couldnt help me because i was outside of my warranty. I had to go through Better Business Bureau just for them to give me a "working" router.

Their first releases had so many problems with firmwares it was ridiculous.
Just hold on to your receipt.

1.21 here also...no problems to speak of. I'll probably stick with this one since I've heard horror stories about the newer firmwares turning the router into a POS. I like this router a lot (it's my first D-Link) but the Netgear WNDR3700 is calling my name...just wondering if it's worth the additional $$$ over the DIR-655.

sticking with 1.21 here, no sense to gamble with possible issues with FW updates

That seems strange, I bought mine over a year ago and it is A4, but yours is only A2?

Using 1.21, never updated by the way.

A4 here with 1.33NA. The routers stable as far as networking goes, but Shareport isn't reliable even with version 3.

I have one of these in my office for an ap and switch.

Alittle update on the Dir 655 A4.
After having tested this router for about 1.5year, I can conclude that any other firmware than 1.21 for this unit makes it unreliable if and only if you have more than 2 wifi constantly connected playing games / torrenting at the sametime. I've tried all firmwares starting from ver 1.22 to 1.35EU and they all become unstable after a few days of heavy load.

I dont use shareport and have turned pretty much everything off on the router only leaving WMM enabled, even the SPI firewall is off and still I need to reboot the router once a week to keep it stable.

Forgot to mention that rebooting with other firmware sometimes doesn't change anything and it was worst with 1.35A which was choke lagging even after 3 reboots when playing SC2.

Necro thread, lol!

This came up on a google search for dir-655 firmware. The latest on the dlink site is 1.37 (5/2013), I have an A4 running 1.21. I do remember years and years ago I tried to flash up and the new firmware at the time (1.3x something) sucked ass, kept dropping connections like crazy. I had to use some old russian firmware trick to side-grade then downgrade back to 1.21 (from 2008). It's been super stable ever since, I reboot it maybe once a month just because.

I'm going to leave it alone but it bugs me that it's not "current".

I disagree, and suggest this counter-proposal

I am just going to point this out. You point out the latest update is 4+ years old. I'll stand by my statement. If you want to load some questionable firmware onto that turd, more power to you, but do everyone a favor and get a router whose firmware is still maintained.

i replaced my 655 back in 2010 when it died with a netgear. the netgear wndr3700 v1, last firmware was 6 years ago lol. works great though. looking at new routers or dd-wrt. still undecided.

If it works and you don't have any problems, just use it. Unless you're a target in some form or have problems you shouldn't have to worry.
