EVO vs iPhone 4

LOL.
Remember how all the Apple Fanboi were loving how "sleek, curvy, sexy" the 3GS was and all?
Now it's suddenly reminiscent of a car from the 90s and too old fashioned. LOL

It's obvious he's an Apple lover though. No other review has as much detail as does this iPhone 4 review.

Well yea, that's how designs change. But either way, this is the most in depth iphone 4 review I've seen. Mostly because it actually compares and benchmarks most of the current popular phones.

Yea, I know :D
I personally think Apple won't fix it. Or if they fix it, it'll quietly be released as iPhone 4 rev 0002.

My point is that, I would not get an iPhone with an antenna issue. Even if you use a case, I don't want an iPhone anymore simply because of Jobs' asshole excuse.

Still think the iphone is the best phone hardware. And extra 7-10db loss when holding it doesn't change that much for me.

I have an iPhone 3G, and to me the iPhone 4 with a higher resolution screen and better camera is still an iPhone. I'm not all that impressed by the new hardware, only the screen. I tried an EVO for a few weeks but wasn't happy with it, so I took it back. I bought a Nexus One to hold me over until something better comes out, maybe one of the Galaxy S variants. I just can't stand the iOS any more.

I moved from a 3G, and the difference is amazing even apart from the screen. I can play games without slowdown and browse much faster. The entire device is just more responsive. Very pleased on a hardware level but I understand not liking iOS.

The "hardware" is what's flawed... I don't know how you can say it's the best.

And also, I might agree with saying it's "the best" package right now. In two months with the Galaxy S hits all the carriers? Not anymore. That'll get worse each month: upcoming dual core phones, 2Ghz phones, etc... Apple can't keep up with Android at just a once-per-year release cycle.

Spot on :) So maybe, just maybe, possibly the iPhone4 is the best phone tech out today, but I think the EVO 4G and Nexus-One owners might argue, but still we give the very slight edge to iPhone4.

But by the end of this year no fucking way. I say even sooner than that. First up, is the Galaxy S will be on T-Mobile next month, and be every bit the equal of iPhone4. And then the MAJOR kick in Apple's ass will be this Fall, with the Nexus-Two on it's way, and T-Mobile is supposed to get some revamped EVO style phone with better hardware and new OS update = game over iPhone4.

And by the time the iPhone5 comes out next June 2011, they will have WinMo-7 taking a bite at them, and Android 3.0 will totally own them for sure. The iPhone5 will have to a huge leap forward for Apple to stay in the game.

We don't know much about those upcoming phones, though...
I don't see them being a whole ton more improved than the Galaxy S phones.

I'd say the next big steps are going to be taken by whoever is making TMobile's dual core phone and then by whomever gets' the Motorola 2Ghz phone. But those are both such "whispers" it's hard saying how they'll turn out!

Although, throwing this out there... The Motorola 2Ghz phone might be the N2. Features I'm worried about
1) Battery. 2Ghz is double the Evo's... And the Evo already sucks battery like a pig.
2) Slider. Sliders have never been thin, always thicker than their candybar counterparts.

I have owned iphone 2g and 3g and was considering the 4g as an upgrade but i am happy to report that i am moving to the EVO tomorrow and saving $35 a month on monthly charges. as we all know ATT's service leaves a lot to be desired and to me the new iphone isn't upgrade worthy. if i had a 3gs i wouldn't upgrade to the 4g. I mean it is nice to have a pretty screen but is it worth $200 and $2400+ for the life of your contract? not to me. and i wouldn't buy an iphone with the new tiered plans.

The Moto will use a different processor architecture.
Besides, the Samsung Galaxy S has a 1Ghz processor and it's battery life is similar to the Iphone 4's.
It's mostly the big screen and radios that eat the Evo's battery (and possibly poor optimization in the Android build.)

Ditto. ATT is raping customers for money on that one.
I am a LIGHT user, IMO. I edged over 2GB usage last week. I think most iPhone users would do the same... Which means their income effectively goes from $30 (5GB plan) to $40 (4GB).

I honestly don't know why people stay with them if they don't have to.
Thankfully with exceptional devices showing up elsewhere, I think people will begin to leave (except for all the iPhone sheep locked into contracts :D.... like me)

Yep... Similar to iPhone 4.
But stellar compared to the 1Ghz (and not as capable) processor in the Evo. Even turning off 4G nets crappy batt life on that device. I think the screen and build are exactly the reasons why.

Ugh, I still have my 4GB iPhone 2G and I'll be damned if I buy the new one. Problem is that AT&T is actually cheaper for us-

I'm the only one that uses more than 200MB of data so with our family plan moving to sprint or verizon means that we have to pay more for each person. Example, my brother has a blackberry but only uses like 10MB a month. On Verizon or Sprint he would need an unlimited plan which is more expensive. I never though I would actually find something good in AT&T's absolute BS policy, but there it is. We saved $30 a month by knocking down 2 people from unlimited to 200MB (BTW, +1GB = $10 but the first 200MB is $15, eff you AT&T)

I'm waiting to see what moorestown brings to the table, but I'm not sure if I can wait that long...

Uh, what? The Evo and the iPhone 4 have basically the exact same CPU. Its the same as the Nexus One, and the same as the Galaxy S. The dual core and 2ghz moto will probably be running the Cortex A9.

The Hummingbird with the GPU will be faster than what the Evo has got.

Anand wrote excellent reviews on both devices:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/3791/the-sprint-htc-evo-4g-review
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3794/the-iphone-4-review

Check it out, hands down the most in-depth and even handed analysis I've read so far.

It's a thorough review which makes me even more disappointed in his Froyo review. I know Anand is capable of writing a great review so the only possible explanation for the lack of detail and care that went into the Froyo review was complacence or intentional.

You'd be hard-pressed to believe that the above reviews and the following statement:

Since I’m not important enough to have an exchange account, I haven’t been able to test the new features like support for Exchange calendars and remote wipe.

came from the same site, especially considering how important that feature is to many users. I know the author was not Anand himself, but surely he cares about the quality of reviews his site produces. Surely, he has enough connections to acquire an Exchange account for this user.

Certainly. It's called GOOGLE SYNC, :D

Google sync is just an Exchange server.

I don't know why u guys keep comparing specs, compare apps because thats why u buy the iphone. Phones aint shit without apps. Been downloading a crap load of apps and to be honest i am stoked. Lots of useful polished apps for productivity. 3D graphics arent bad either, I found a bunch of good games. Im liking my iphone more and more. I live in the Dallas area and I have no bad reception what so ever.
Although, according to the the owners praises and specs on the EVO, it should outperform the iphone 4 by a HUGE margin in running 3D games. What kinda games and apps are out there right now to show off the EVO's performance?

The Galaxy S renders Sims 3 in 3D quite well. The iPhone can't compete with it.

Correction, the iPhone "aint shit without apps". Other phones (like Android) are just fine without 3rd party apps ;)

In reality, the iPhone's app store really only has the Android market beat in a couple of areas. One is gaming, but so far most games I've tried on a phone have sucked. I'd rather kill a few minutes web surfing than playing 99% of the iPhone's games. The second is getting big name apps first, which is slowly changing as Android is quickly picking up momentum. And the third and final is generally prettier apps - but I'm a function over form guy so I don't really care.

Most iphone games suck? There's plenty of great games on the iphone. Pretty much all of the popcap games to name a few. And yes, the android also isn't shit without apps.

If the iphone was made by htc and had android on it, you'd be saying how great it is.

No, I said *I* don't like most iPhone games. I think all smartphone gaming sucks. I *hate* touchscreen gaming.

Uh, what? As soon as you put Android on it its no longer running iOS - all my complaints have been directed at iOS. The hardware is fine (aside from the antennae problem, lol) - its the same as everyone else's high end smartphone hardware.

I didn't really buy my evo for games i bought it because for several reasons. Sprint is alot cheaper than ATT and Verizon. My data is not capped as I have already used 3.4gb of data on my Evo. I love the size of the screen and makes web browsing much better. I feel like i have a mini laptop or something in my hand. The phone also is not much bigger than your iphone still fits in shirt pocket easily. Android 2.2 will make the evo much better than it is now . Android has a ton of apps just like Apple maybe Apple has more games i don't care. I don't really play many games on my phone. My sprint signal has been great and the 3g is pretty damn good I have no complaints.

Exactly.

iPhone+Android would actually be a pretty phenomenal device. Apple has a knack for compact and good looking hardware, Android is just flat out a great OS... Best of both worlds.

Again- aside from the Antenna issue.

So what then. Most games on every single console and PC suck to by that metric. Thanks for saying nothing then.

Honestly games are probably low on priority for people.

People that want to game in their free time are going to own a Console or PC...

People that play dinky games on their phone just do it to kill time if they aren't at home or anything.

This is why I think vastly more important than GAMES (Which yes, the iPhone has better games) is your utilities, social apps, etc.

For most people, anyway. Again, everyone uses their phone differently (which is, ironically, a huge selling point of Android).

Because the guy I originally quoted was complaining that we are comparing iOS and Android based on the merits of iOS, Android, and the hardware they run on instead of 3rd party apps, with an emphasis on games. My point was that there are plenty of people who don't give a shit about gaming on their phone, and so far in this thread very few people have brought that up as a point in iOS's favor at all - indicating that in this thread people really don't care much about cell phone gaming.

Spot on close this thread nothing more to say. I just got my EVO last night and totally love it. And with 2.2 update coming later Summer even better things to look forward too.

To me ATT is the bad deal in getting an iPhone. They rape you per month and service blows around me.

I honestly don't think people question ATT's rates.

You want to kill iPhone sales, TMobile? Do a quick "Why the Vibrant is better than iPhone" commercial, show the monthly rate differences... And how you can save over $1,000+ just by switching.

I really didn't think about rates. I had no idea how much more money they were screwing me for versus the competitors. It's really insane.

Gaming on a cell phone...uh no thanks. And I am a pretty big tech geek. Have a triple 27" monitor Eyefinity setup and always get a new phone at least every 9-12 months.

But I have zero interest what so ever to play games on my phone, that's what ny custom PC is for. I love fast smartphones for multitasking...being snappy...live wallpapers...cool OS features...fast navigation...and of course email and texts...and last but most important a quality phone to call people and no drops

i like playing texas hold em on my phone. Everyone phone i have own thats what i play the most i dunno why. I tried playing super mario on my evo but the controls are not the same or as good as a real NES controller so i uninstalled it. but it ran great just didn't like the controls. I don't really care about the games. I had a pre before the Evo and never really played alot of games. That phone did games really good. Wait til 2.2 maybe the games will be out by then i dunno.
