Corsair Cooling Air Series A70

IRSmurf,
Thanks.
I was hoping for some reviews.
Guess I'll wait.

Never used the unit, but I'll take a stab of writing a review for it.

Corsair has always made quality hardware, and now they are venturing into the enthusiast heatsink market. They've succeded on their first try on other units such as the Obsidian 800D series case. After hours of testing we've found this unit preforms within 3 degrees of the benchmark king the ThermalRight Ultra 120 Rev C when using similiar fans. The price is TBD, but I'm going to guess it'll come in at 50$ +/- 10$. In the end, it's another quality unit and will achieve similar overclocks to most other heatpiped upright coolers, and realistically, 3 degrees isn't going to gain you much in terms of overclocking either way.

edit: from some posters below looks like I was too low on the price.

Problem is, it is priced at $80 @Best Buy, not $60...

I bought one, and it works pretty well on my i7 920 @ 4ghz. It is quiet and with air-dams on the sides it works extremely well. It was either that one or a H50, but I cringe at the thought of a leak and I am concerned about the lifespan of the H50... The A70 just gave me better piece of mind and works as advertised.

Now, how much better it is than say coolers in the $50-60 price-range, I could not tell you, but I would expect it to be at the top of the list. It is a little pricey at $80, but overall it is well built and quiet. I will say the y-adapter for the fans I received had a bad wire in it, nothing I couldn't fix, just a PITA.

I don't think it's a big deal, but I asked Redbeard what they were aiming for with this release in a PM. I'll summarize the reply as :

It's not meant to upstage the top end TRUE, mega's etc, but it's pretty close, costs less and comes with two fans. There's also a higher QC level that Corsair states is happening which should help with performance figures across the board compared to other direct touch heatpipe alternatives out there.

I forget what I paid for my fanless TRUE 120 three years ago, but it would have been around $60. The A70 is around $64 Canadian if you shop at certain places with certain perks right now.

Btw Db, how are your temps with that overclock?

Yeah, this is pretty much correct. It's actually pretty competitive with the TRUE, but the giant coolers like the Noctua NH-D14 will be a bit better (and more expensive) on high-end overclocks.

In our testing, it was always within margin of error with other high-end coolers until around 250W power draw from the CPU, at which point the coolers with more mass won out by a small margin.

Our target street price is around $69 which will be a pretty good deal considering the performance, the fact that it comes with two fans, mounting brackets for all modern sockets, etc.

Are there any plans to sell it without the fans? I know there are a large number of enthusiasts who will want to replace the fans (simply because they have a fan brand loyalty, not because of a fault within the fans).

Not at this time. We may go in that direction with future products, but it's unlikely for A70 and A50.

Redbeard, what is the TIM that comes with the A70?

I am switching motherboards and after all my testing of fan orientations I am almost out and want to get what you guys ship with the setup.

Thanks!

BTW, I only have some extra TX-2 on hand from my previous setups Core-Contact Freezer install (AMD Phenom II x4 955BE on a Maximus III Formula), and wondering if it will worsen my temps if I end up having to use that instead?

This cooler looks exactly the same as the Xigmatek S-1284. Is it? That cooler was selling for $29.99 with one fan, is the A70 just as good?

Never tested that one, but I know we have a better mounting bracket mechanism and probably some more expensive (and better) fan clip designs. Performance wise, I can tell you the quality control procedures we had to put in place to guarantee the performance we wanted weren't easy.
