Morning folks.

I'm in the UK and currently looking to buy a decent monitor. Currently using 2 x 22" LG 1680x1050 jobbies.

So, I'm in the market for something with a better resolution. The above two monitors are my options.

3008wfp is £1,140.10
the
U2711 is £891.45

It'll be for primarily playing online poker (multi tables) at the moment and working (software developer, I love my screen real estate).

What are your thoughts?

Cheers in advance

I'm in the same boat man - but I'm in the states, I started this thread yesterday, - check it

The main issue is the fact that the U2711 squeezes a lot of pixels in a small space, while chopping off some vertical res because its 16x9 instead of 16x10 like the 3008

I myself still can't make my mind up.....grrr

I will warn you that the pixel pitch can be annoying. I'm already using a monitor with a similar pixel pitch(slightly lower) and it can get annoying at times to use. So if you don't mind small text, I really don't, then it really boils down to size. I'm still second guessing me ordering the 2711. I think the deciding factor for me was the color accuracy, I just recently bought a calibration tool, and the input lag. You might get less but what you get is better.

I wear minus 11 contact and the text is not any smaller. Its like the print out of newspaper.

Get a 3008wfp. Its all you need in one big screen.

Get it refurbished from Dell n will save tons of money!

I just got my U2711, upgrade from a Samsung 24" TN 16:10, the size of the screen is almost the same, in person you almost can't tell the difference (its the same height and only 3 inches wider). The difference is the resolution though, I can tell a difference in that for sure, color accuracy wasn't that much different to my eyes

Text isn't a problem with me, but debating if it was worth $850...

I still wouldn't go with a 30" because its just too large for my space, it is a lot bigger than the U2711 because its also 16:10. I actually like the 16:9 for gaming though.

Thanks for your insight. It's currently looking like the 3008.

Arrrgghhh. Hate decisions like this. I guess whatever I get, I won't be disappointed...but...

I'm looking forward to trying out the new Spyder I picked up. 16:9 for gaming is bloody awesome though.

I don't game so much these days. Not FPS anyway, so not really fussed about the input lag. If I can fit it on my desk, it's looking like the 3008WFP.

How's the AG on the latest revision?

I have 3008wfp and Rev A03 and AG coating is OK. I can still see some sparkle. On the 3007wfp, the AG is BAD. Nothing can compare to my 2405 that I got back in 2005.

Grats on the new monitor. I think you made the right choice given what you use it for.

Nice! I'll be interested to read about your experience. I have also come to the same conclusion you have, just waiting on a good deal!

$1720 at the moment according to XE.com.

Sadly they had some card processing issues and declined my order (they rang me). So I'll reorder tomorrow as I won't get chance today! Booooo.

I hope you're prepared for a long wait. Shipping dates are mid July. Possible refresh coming up?

I was buying from a reseller anyway who has stock. But yeah, you raise a valid point. Maybe it's a blessing that it failed...hmmmm

Can't seem to locate any in the UK. They're £1500 direct from Dell, although sure I could sort a discount.

Why are they out of supply? I'm also curious when the U3011 will come out. That might also drop the prices on the 3008 model when it does. But 30" monitor does sound like the right choice for your uses and the aspect ratio is helpful as well.

I seriously doubt we ever see a U3011 - because again, dell makes monitors, not lcd panels - and almost ALL of the lcd panel manufacturers are switching to the 16x9 format over the 16x10 because they can cut more panels from a master liquid crystal filament. It just makes business sense - that said, a 30" 16x9 panel does not make sense

....sadly, I feel the 3008wfp is the last IPS 30" we'll see from dell - the next step will be OLED displays - which is a whole new (and fucking incredible) ballgame.

I just picked up a 3008wfp off of ebay, brand new, $1100 shipped.

Ordered again yesterday. Will be here on Monday. Sadly I'm selling my car on Monday evening, so doubt I'll get to set everything up!

Have to "build" myself a new desk too...

Damnit. Got my 3008wfp today and it has TONS of stuck green and red pixels in the upper lefthand corner - were talking 200-300 stuck/dead pixels. The good news is I just checked the service tag and I have 4 years left on the warranty, hopefully Dell wont give me any crap about the original order number...

this thing was built last month according to the service tag

on a side note, its HUGE, I like it :)

Fortunately I haven't seen/noticed any yet. I didn't get much chance to look last night. Shame about yours!

Yeah, it's HUGE. I doubt I'll get chance to play poker tonight, but looking forward to it!

I went for a 3007WFP-HC even if it was used, just because I know input lag isn't an issue, and I know a 2007FP is a perfect side monitor for it. :D

That was the only reason I didn't get a u2711... there is nothing that matches with it on the sides for more screen space if needed except another u2711.

That and the 3008 was pretty expensive compared to a 3007... few hundred bucks for essentially the same screen. But I understand wanting to buy something brand new and get a warranty

On a side note - something that really bothers me that I didn't think would....

The OSD on the 3008wfp sucks. Its the same old crappy OSD I used to have on a u2407 - I knew it was the old OSD beforehand - but it really makes the 3008 feel "dated" vs the newer dell design (2209wa, U2711, etc) although the aluminum bezel does make up for it somewhat....I just don't know about this thing...

3007WFP doesnt' even have an OSD... you get 3 buttons... on/off and brightness up or down.

And we're not even talking about the AG coating on the 3007 or the wide gamut with no sRGB mode to control it.

@Elipsn
Well atleast you get alot of options with the OSD as it seems the 3008 is lucky to have one in the first place(glares at ZR-30W).

I will say the AG on the 3008 is just about perfect, I prefer some level of AG - not too much, not too little - Overall I'm very happy with the display, and dell is sending a brand new replacement unit :)

AG coating on 3008 is OK. It is bad on the 3007. Go and check 2405wfp made in 2005. It is prefect AG coating.

Help!

I have a 5870 graphics card. My poker software always Tiles on display 1. I want that to be my 3008WFP. However, it's currently 3. How do I fix this? Any ideas?

Ultramon. If you have multimonitor setups this program is mandatory.

I bought it, still not sending my tables to my 30" monitor. Think it may be because it's still Display 3 in Catalystland

Click on the ultramon's icon with the right button - set primary monitor - monitor 3 (or whatever number your 30'' has).
