The company I work for is looking a linux guy to help building and maintaining our internal dstro.

The position is listed as a senior one but we are willing to work junior guys as well.

Position title: Sr. Software Engineer
Platform Engineer - XLD
Location: Heathrow, FL / Fremont, CA

Department: NSS
Classification: Exempt

Schedule: Customary Business Hours
Reports to: Sr. Software Manager

Summary:
The Sr. Software Engineer is responsible for building and maintaining the Xyratex Linux Distribution as part of our software platform delivery efforts. The engineer is responsible for determining the appropriate set of components required to build a Linux Distribution to solve the requirements as presented by Product Management. The engineer is responsible for triaging issues presented by the field and determining the appropriate fixes for said issues. The engineer is responsible for engaging the Open Source community as needed.

The Sr. Software Engineer is responsible for completing individual deliverables according to company objectives, policies, and guidelines.

Essential Job functions & Responsibilities:
• Creation of the Xyratex Linux Distribution (XLD) from multiple sources.
• Creation and maintenance of cross-platform builds as required.
• Triage and resolution of field issues found in the XLD.
• Participates in the enhancement of any infrastructure required for XLD development.
• Engages the Linux and Open Source community as needed.

• Work with QA to resolve bugs, performance issues, and gaps in requirements.
• Write and maintain technical specifications that describe development, logic, coding, and unit testing for technical solutions.
• Collaborate with other development teams to ensure full integration of all parts of system.
• Research and evaluate alternative software systems to assist in developing solutions.
• Supports the development and execution of GBS strategies to meet NSS business objectives.
• Manages daily business activities and tasks in a global organization.
• Builds collaborative relationships on multiple organizational levels, with managers, partners and peers from diverse backgrounds across functional lines.Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
• Shares best practices with partners and peer groups.
• Thinks strategically and plans tactically.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Knowledge of scripting language(s) required – bash/Bourne shell, sed, awk, python, and perl.
• Knowledge of makefiles and/or other build environments required.
• Knowledge of Linux kernel development required.
• Knowledge of revision control and branch management a plus.
• Knowledge of system bring up (BIOS or u-boot, grub, initrd, init, rc) a plus.
• Familiarity with RedHat, SuSE, Linux From Scratch, Sourceforge a plus.
• Understanding how to use and harden source patches.

• Able to prove understanding of and apply industry software development processes and practices.
• Ability to communicate complex technical material with groups outside of engineering.
• Able to prioritize multiple tasks, managing conflicting deadlines, and working effectively in a dynamic environment.
• Knowledge of software development lifecycle.
• Basic understanding of functional groups related to engineering (i.e., documentation, release engineering, etc.).
• Model effective change management techniques.
• Understand the corporate business plan and his/her role in supporting it.
• Apply knowledge of regulations and subject matter laws appropriately.
• Intermediate level skill working with MS Office Suite of products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
• Advocate point of view when appropriate.
• Quickly learns and assimilates new business processes, ideas and concepts to formulate conclusions and deliver results.
• Works with integrity. Maintains credibility by meeting commitments.
• Actively pursues opportunities for learning and self development.
• Analytical skills necessary to assess information and apply judgment in decision making.
• Understands span of control to escalate or delegate issues to appropriate levels.

Education & Experience:
• Bachelor's degree (CS, EE, or Math preferred) or equivalent work experience; 3+ years of Linux experience.
• Cross-platform build experience highly desired.
• Experience with embedded RTOS and embedded Linux platforms a plus.

• Experience meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers; gets first-hand customer information and uses it for improvements in products and services; talks and acts with customers in mind; establishes and maintains effective relationships with cross-functional teams throughout the organization gaining their trust and respect.
• Experience working in problem and change management environments.

Schedule requirements:
• Must appreciate the importance of of contributing outside of normal working hours in response to critical customer issues.

Physical requirements:
• Ability to effectively communicate in both verbal and written formats.
• Ability to operate computer equipment.

Travel requirements:
• Occasional domestic travel with the potential for international travel
• Current passport and no history of declined visas, or entry refusal to any country.

We would greatly prefer some one in the US but for the right candidate arrangements could be made.

We have several remotely employees including ones in the UK, Ireland, and Malaysia.
 
Isn't it a huge drain on resources to maintain a internal distro? I would think it would be better to go with mainstream stuff like RedHat.. unless you plan on releasing the distro to the people.

Anyways, looks neat. If I had half those qualifications and lived in CA I would apply :)
 
As far as being a drain it is a bit, we are currently tracking SLES but there are quite a few things changed to meet our needs.


Anybody else? Job pays well, company is pretty decent to work.
 
I am like 45 minutes away and well...couldn't write code to save my life. I am just a Linux Administrator. Sounds like an amazing opportunity for someone for sure!
