I bought one of these on fleebay

USB to 25 Pin Parallel IEEE 1284 Printer Adapter driver
http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Parallel-Converter-Adapter-USB-DB25F/dp/B000CRWRZ2/ref=pd_sim_e_4

to hook up an 8 year old HP OfficeJet T series fax/scan/printer to a new machine for someone. The system has XP. I spent a fair amount of time trying to get the thing to work and having no luck. The adapter doesn't seem defective, windows recognizes that something is plugged in, but I can't find drivers for it. Has anyone else had one of these types of things and where to find drivers for them?

The user comments in the amazon link yield these comments in which several people find that it simply doesn't work with WinXP. You may be out of luck there.

The user feedback for another similar adapter on monoprice says that cable works fine with WinXP. Just read carefully about whether you need a 2 inch or 1 inch connector (I'm not 100% sure which one you need).

plenty of such devices exist (usually built around an ftdi USB uart chip - well the serial ones are).
As long as you are not intending todo bitbanging (ie JTAG programming) you will be fine. The usb -> foo dongles are not good for bitbanging without some sort of intermediatary device to ensure decent/consistant baud at the output lines ( ie like an FPGA)
