A bill proposed by Joe Lieberman would give the President and Homeland Security sweeping new controls over the internet with very few limitations. This is some scary stuff right here. Big Brother is alive and well.



Virtually all private internet service providers would be mandated to cooperate with the bill. Those who did not show evidence that they had a clear system in place to give the government control access would meet punishment. The NCCC could "issue an order" against such rebellious providers -- though the exact nature of the order is unknown.

As an aside, I seriously question how many of our nation's top officials and officeholders actually know about technology and how things work, rather than just knowing that "this is a website, this thing is called an iPhone, this is how you send an e-mail..."
 
Uh he already has the power to kill the internet. He's had it since it was created. By law the president has the power to kill all communications in case of emergency this was enacted in the early 1900's. This bill is not about giving him the power to do it but to better define everything and also to pass some other pointless things.

AFAIK they certainly have control; Which is a bad thing?
ICANN was started in the US in the late 90s of which Washington retains oversight authority.

Maybe things have changed.

Ehm, true, america's internet is very little compared to the "world" - USA.
so yeah, and this is to protect yourself against cyber attacks, but lemme ask.

so, you really wanna stop a country, to stop a attack that would most likely, want just this.
 
you can route traffic through countries, meaning you would have to block basicly all countries, and such a "easy" thinking really doesnt work here, and i dont think russia really see buying computer power off a black market as a bad thing

Lieberman's Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act of 2010 (S. 3480) is, thankfully, somewhat more complex than that. It requires that owners of critical infrastructure, a definition that dates to the PATRIOT Act, work with the newly created director of the National Center for Cybersecurity and Communications within the Department of Homeland Security, to develop a risk assessment and a plan to mitigate their risks in the case of a national cyber emergency.

One has to ask exactly what constitutes a cyber-emergency, national or otherwise.

Come to think about it, wouldn’t a total breakdown of communications constitute such an emergency?
 
All that would need to be done is trick them into thinking the threat is great enough and the officals do the work.

It's funny that people are still saying that, despite the proof of the past two years of filth in Congress and presidential administrations. I've heard that so much in the recent past, only to see the bills passed anyway, that it just makes you look like a complete inept and full of apathy idiot who lends a hand to atrocities like this happening.

I think he was pointing out the fact that there are evils on both sides. I still want to see the yellow cake and WMDs that led us to wage war in Iraq. This word cyber, a term often used in movies, is too general and ambiguous to mean anything. I suppose that was intentional.

I think that's the problem. They intentionally write these things to be so vague that they can weasel their way into calling it constitutional, or at least getting a majority vote. Because if they actually spelled out the powers he would have, no one in their right mind would allow it.

It really doesn't matter if you voted for a Democrat or Republican. Both parties are the same. They spend insane amounts of money, cater to big business, increase the size of the government, and flip flop on issues.
