just now getting into WoW.....

haha god i remember the area shouts when someone would see alliance heading for the SM, everyone would throw on their carrots and mount up and try and catch em, poor alliance would look back to see 20+ horde chasin them, so much fun lol.

I dont think they will ever top the open world pvp classic wow had (tarren mill raids lol) or the 8 hour av battles, those were intense at times lol.

8 hours? Hell some were 24+. I swear one weekend, it was the same match all weekend. Kind of wish they'd bring back some of the elements to make the games last a bit longer. It's mostly a PVE race now.

The only advice I would give is that with the economies so out of whack, you and your roomie should both take two gathering professions to start. That way, you can build up cash fast (it's amazing how much people will pay for peacebloom, copper ore, or light leather, not to mention anything higher), and have good weps and armor, which makes the game even easier. Once you hit max level, then you can switch to a crafting profession if you wish. Don't be afraid to use the auction house for your benefit.

Yeah, definitely remember the 2-3 day long AV games. The game was awesome back then, too bad it's pretty much been ruined =/

Oh man. Original AV. That was the shit. I remember playing for probably 12 hours then going to bed, and the same match was on in the morning. Epic. (except when alliance camped the horde base with fence-jumpers for hours on end)

Later, in the lull before AQ came out my guild would steamroll AV for fun. A full 40-man raid straight from BWL against random pug. haha. Our quickest run was something like under two minutes.

Man I used to LOVE those AV's....

I miss the days of hating the opposing faction on my server. I hope they bring some of that back. I guess it won't be with BG's for sure, since they said it would be a nationwide pool... Oh well, my hatred for the Alliance still burns! For the HORDE! =)

Anyhow, have fun OP, and take your time! As others have mentioned....
-Gathering profs will greatly help you build up some money as people will pay good money for old mats nowadays.
-Skip the Quest addon until your next character, if you even need it at that point.
-Try out different xp-gains to find what you like best. Dungeons, BG's, Questing, Grinding etc. A good mix is recommended, but if you love dungeons and hate everything else, just run dungeons!
-Also, if you or your friend makes a character capable of tanking or healing, you will greatly increase your que times (tanking especially), meaning that you can get in a dungeon asap!

Good luck!

Indeed. I'm not big on being nostalgic about the old days of WoW (I can remember more things to hate about it than like), but I loved the fact that you'd most of the time you see an Alliance, it's when you wanna blow em up. The Sanctuary type of zones like Shattrath and Dalaran really messed up the idea that the Horde and Alliance were enemies. Arenas removed that feel as well. It's become so objective-based with dailies and whatnot, most of the time the opposing factions would rather not mess with each other to get their shit done ASAP and get outta there.

I dunno, I liked idea of resilience. People were strong in PvP because they geared up by PvPing. As a casual-but-not-bad player, nothing pissed me off more than being constantly pitted against the same premade AB guilds with full Tier 2 PvE gear dominating everyone. It didn't matter what hour of the day it was, they were there. I was more shocked to realize that they did raids on top of that.

edit: Of course, the lines have blurred considerably in WotLK. You can get a pretty decent quantity of PvP gear purely from PvE now.

You cant even get to van/drek in 2 minutes.

I think they ruined pvp with resilience.

Giving players some form of survivability in PVP ruined the game? Im guessing you missed rogues being able to stunlock you leaving you completely helpless.

PVP was not even close to balanced back then. Not that its a whole lot better now...

Trade Chat is pretty funny, anyone who disagrees has a stick up their ass and probably leaves after one wipe and sucks AKA NERD RAGERS.

I disagree and am far from a nerd rager. What kind of person gets enjoyment out of the constant childish trolling going on nowadays? It can be funny on occasion but its mostly childish banter.

Me.

Trade chat is a cesspool of stupidity, which is why you never see anyone that's actually good at the game participating. Enjoy your murloc/thunderfury spam.

Lok'tar ogar, friend!

I gotta agree with you about the server thing. Any and all sense of community within servers has been completely destroyed by cross-realm BGs and instances. Now you're grouped with players that you will likely never see again, which makes for a rather stale experience. That, and the fact that you can now port to any instance is a big one for me; it really detracts from the "worldly" feeling of WoW now that you don't really need to set foot outside of Dalaran to do a lot of things at endgame anymore.

Yeah, it's been steadily becoming more and more instantaneous with each major patch. But to be honest, I seldom grouped with the same people more than once before cross-server dungeons anyway. At this point, its more of a clean-up of something they already destroyed a long time ago, making it even more convenient. BG queuing at any major city, summoning stones to summon players, etc. were the main things that turned players into city campers for a while now. It really got annoying when I found myself being the only one heading to a dungeon while everyone else were asking for summons.

The most "worldly" feel I got from WoW was during the Sunwell event. The new batch of dailies had me making a short stop to almost every zone in Outland, and another set on the Isle of Quel'danas where all the end-game activity was at. A non-Sanctuary free-for-all. Second to that was the opening of the AQ gates, but that was just lasted only for a few days.

Thats about when i quit playing. You can sit all day in dalaran between instances. Its caused so much more trade trolling since now thats the only thing to do between instances.

I was all for casual friendly but it crossed a line for me that sapped the fun right out.

Between making it easier and the no consequence douchebaggery thats rampant in cross realm instances its lost its appeal.

Although you do know BGs have always been cross realm right?

Not always. In vanilla, you were limited to your own realm. So getting steamrolled by the same guild in the latest PvE gear was commonplace. Also before that, BG queuing was done at the actual zones they were themed for (AB battlemasters in Arathi Highland, AV between Hillsbrad and Alterac Mountains, WSG in the Northern Barrens). The areas are still there to this day.

By the time I started WoW, queuing from the major cities was already implemented.

I had a beast of a time finding people to dungeon with on Burning Blade in vanilla dungeons. It is much faster to just quest/grind, than get aggravated waiting for a group to form IMO.

Roll a character with the ability to dps or tank. So Warrior, Druid, DK, or Pally. As soon as you get 1k gold, get dual spec. One for dungeons and one for leveling.

Having a 80 mage that was a raider 3 nights a week I got burned out after a few years.

On may 15th, I started a pally who is now lvl 75. thats with doing dungeons for 1-2 hours a day as a tank until 60 then outland/northrend questing. They totally nerfed the dungeon leveling xp once you hit 60 imo. The wife and kid are going to be gone all weekend and I'm going to do my damndest to get to 80 LOL. Right now is a good time because of the summerfest I can hit all the fires in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms and get another 1/2 a level.

old time WoW was THE best time I've ever had as far as gaming goes.

We had a pretty sweet guild on Laughing skull, I remember those many nights we'd just pvp in arathi bashin...

only team that really gave us trouble we're those god damn Banana Boyz, but they hacked so whatever :p

Now that I've hit 80 and hit the "you need to raid to get better gear" level, I'm a bit bored, it's not as addicting as it used to be since it's not as hardcore... or maybe I just grew up, who knows.

I just enjoy it, I'm probably gonna start an ALT and try to relearn the game or something :)

if you're just now getting into WoW, get out. Wait till cataclysm is out otherwise if you're still leveling when Cata releases then you'll be really confused.

you'll never get to see original stratholme =(

When BGs originally came out, we all gathered in Arathi Highlands for AB. In between matches, we would sneak over to Hammerfall and pester the horde. When our queues popped, we would do a suicide run and try to kill as many as possible, then take the queue right before we died. Back then you didn't have to be out of combat to take the queue.
