California License Plates Going Digital, Show Ads?

The California Legislature is considering a bill for digital license plates that are capable of displaying ads. Huh!?! All I have to say is there better be an "opt out" option or this will end in nothing but trouble. Imagine cars displaying ads that are against someone’s religion, beliefs or personal preference?

The device would mimic a standard license plate when the vehicle is in motion but would switch to digital ads or other messages when it is stopped for more than four seconds, whether in traffic or at a red light. The license plate number would remain visible at all times in some section of the screen.

So i didn't read it, but let me get this straight, They want to us MY car to make money off advertisments? Why not just pass a law that everyone has to get one of the stupid car wraps put on their cars

lol oh boy... this has bad news written all over it.

If they're going to turn you into a mobile advertisement, I can only assume that they'll be paying you (yeah right)

This is a total joke...glad I moved out of California when I did...place has gone crazy.

Condom ads on a religious person's car. Beer ads on an AA member's car. Ford ads on a Chevy owners car. Jenny Craig ads on a fat persons car.

....stupid idea.

lol wtf ads??? i can see people tailing each other to read the ads.

So, let me get this straight. A state with negative amounts of cash has found a way to line one of their cronies pockets "exploring" a really bad idea.

I'd be ok with this if the corporations subsidized the license fee, and if it was voluntary.

Otherwise no dice.

That makes no sense at all. I'd just hack mine to show profanity or something... even show different plates lol.

hack it to show different plate numbers. High tech James Bond style, lol

...and then you get some tool that decides to hack the license plate to play pr0n snippets to the person behind them. I see a lot of wrecks in the future...

hack it to show text messages to the hottie behind you. :)
"Call me, 555-1234"

can I get some of what the legislation are smoking?...

this isn't a half-baked idea, this is a fully-baked offa some of humboldt's finest story-rant that a pizza delivery boy thought up after delivering pizza to the state government's 'green room' and being asked how he'd deal with california's money problem....

I don't think they could recoup the costs of each unit by the time it fails, gets broken or stolen or needs to be replaced for some other reason. And then theres the running cost, would have to have some kind of wireless connection to do the amber alerts.. Silly.

Plus all the hacks mentioned above lol.

I think the initial reaction has shown it to be a bad enough idea, but what about a privacy concern? I assume that if you can broadcast ads, amber alerts, and traffic information, you can also probably tell whose car (or at least which license plate number) is on the road or where it may be headed. It wouldn't be a big jump for them to go from passive receivers to something similar to how a cell phone negotiates with towers and can supply a general (though not terribly accurate sometimes) location to emergency services if you dial 911 from a cell phone. Of course, it could also behave just like a radio, just not one you can necessarily control? The article was pretty vague on the specifics of the device.

That, and doesn't it seem like a bad project to spearhead, you know, putting what I can only imagine would be some sort of rugged digital display on every car when California is cutting back on things like school books because of their shitty finances?

I want at least 20% of the the cut they'll be making from displaying ads on MY car. I really don't see how they can force anyone to display ads on your car, certainly you should be getting some of the $$$ from this.

To be fair, if you knew anything about AA, you'd realize this would be perfectly normal. :D

If they implement this, it will just be a bandaid. They obviously have budget problems that will continue until addressed. I think we see WAY too many advertisements as it is. I can't even stand to watch TV or listen to the radio anymore.

Ok someone needs to bitch slap the people in charge of California. Who the heck over there voted for these morons? I thought the people in my state were retarded when they elected a former wrestler as governor (twice I might ad), but this takes the cake. You don't solve money problems by doing something this stupid. You solve them by taking a step back and figuring out better ways to spend what little money you have. Raise taxes for a temporary fix, drop the wages of elected officials, do something to convince local companies to hire more people to increase the number of people paying the temporarily raised taxes. Fund the god damn educational system so in the future there will be a few more semi-well educated people around instead of forcing the schools to try to teach on a shoe string budget letting more and more kids fall into the cracks. And I'm going to stop this rant here. I'm sure someone else will jump in and either continue it or attack me for my opinion.

Is this proof that the best weed comes out of California? The politicians are obviously smoking too much of it...:p

I’d like to know who is going to be doing the “study”
This is probably nothing more than a payoff to some politically connected parasite…
Here, have a few million to study another stupid idea….

It’s ok, we have plenty of extra money out here in California…
Oh, wait we’re broke, better let some more criminals out of jail and lay off some more teachers…..

Isn't there a law that forbids putting anything on your car that may distract other drivers?

I thought that's why neon tubes were illegal.

Idiocracy:

Phone Computer: Welcome to AOL Time Warner Taco Bell US Government Long Distance. Please say the name of the person you wish to call.
Rita: Upgrayedd.
Phone Computer: There are 9,726 listings for "Upgrayedd". Please deposit $2,000 to begin connection.

Ok someone needs to bitch slap the people in charge of California. Who the heck over there voted for these morons?

Same people who continually vote for Pelosi, Boxer, Maxine Walters, etc, and will vote in November to put Jerry Brown back in as Governer, even though he's the person who's the original source of most of California's problems. (legalizing Government Unions, stop building freeways, etc)

It must be really nice to have a balanced budget that allows them to explore genius ideas like this.... wait a minute...

I really don't care what those loons come up with in California, just don't come crying to the rest of us when you bankrupt your state.

This is almost as pathetic as GM claiming is has "Paid back the american tax payer in FULL + interest, 5 years in advance!!". Hmm.. so where did they get all that cash soo early? Business must be booming right? Not exactly.

They took money out of the TARP fund to pay us back.
But wait a minute, isn't TARP funded by the taxpayers? Why yes, yes it is!
So they've taken taxpayer money, to pay off the loan they took from the taxpayer.
Make sense?
It makes perfect sense to politicians as a way to boost sales by claiming it is no longer in debt to the taxpayer.
Yet another reason why I will never buy GM again.

Oops, didn't mean to hijack thread.

California is no bueno. There, back on topic :)

the only way I would consider one of these would be if they were hackable so I could broadcast profanity to dooshbag drivers riding my tail..

HAHA. Well said. I live in California and i am really hoping this fails.

Haha, "yeah right" indeed. They'll probably make Californians pay more for them.

Work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, gov't wants a piece of my pie, understandable.. right? But before I even GET to work, they've already taxed me at least... three times. Once when I bought the car to drive me to work, again to buy the gasoline to power the car that drives me to work, then again to register ($220/annually and rising) the car that I drive to work. Then they take a little over 21% from my paychecks, which is literally 8 hours a week of my life. Then I get taxed 10% every time I spend my earnings, and they still want more from me every April. How is this state in a deficit again?

I'd move away from California if I can convince my family to come with me.

Of course, this is the real reason behind this stupid idea. Once the have a radio device installed on every car, they can finally implement the mileage tax. This way they can not only charge you based on the type of car, how far you drive, but even when your drive.

Drive a Hummer to work during rush hour & get a tax bill for $100 a week.

HAHA. Well said. I live in California and i am really hoping this fails.

I don't live in California and I want it to fail because if it succeeds in Cali other states will take note and likely do the same thing. Drivers around here are distracted enough with their damn cell phones we don't need more distractions to make it more dangerous for me to walk to work. I'd rather keep getting hit by a truck driven by a distracted driver as a once in a life time experience thank you very much.

Even though CA is loony enough to implement this, it's still a slippery slope.

I complained to My elected representatives in the Assembly and in the Senate and said I was against this stupid idea, As this thing would kill My battery, My car is parked most of the time, Especially in the Winter as I park My car under a carport that's open to the weather.

It's probably another of Arnolds weird ideas.

I think that should read... "He said other crackpot elected officials are exploring something similar."

I think that should read... "He said other crackpot elected officials are exploring more ways to waste time & money."
