I have been watching E3 and been trying to keep up with whats new coming out. But i might have missed the answer to what im curious about, so i will ask you guys.

The new PS3 ( http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/14/sony-announcing-ps3-bundles-with-more-storage-faster-wifi-and/ ) , the one with Wireless N and a new chip-set, has that been announced for a date they will become available or is that still a rumor? Are bundles typically cheaper? Like I am not necessarily interested in the "Move"...but considering i want to buy a PS3, and the Move is coming out, do you have a guess on if buying the PS3 and then the Move separately, or buying their PS3 Move bundle...(Eyecam/Move controller/Game im guessing would be the bundle)?

Its highly likely you guys dont know more than me about this stuff considering it was just announced, but i still figured id ask.
Cause if the Move Starter bundle is $99.99 and a New PS3 Slim 250GB is $399.99, would it be typical for them to have the PS3+Move bundle just be $399.99+$99.99?

How safe is buying a PS3 120GB and putting in a 500GB HDD yourself? / how does it affect the warranty?

Thanks guys

The 250 GB slims are 349.99. As far as I know nothing official about new PS3 models was announced.

As for the hard drive it's easy to replace and does not void the warranty http://us.playstation.com/support/answer/index.htm?a_id=362.

Sweet thats awesome. PS3 250gb slim (even bundled with infamous and LBPlanet) is $350, and 120gb is $299. Wow. Do you know of the popular HDD that people buy and recommend for using as the upgrade HDD when swapping out PS3 drive? It definitely looks like the best idea is to buy a PS3 Slim 120gb and upgrade the HDD myself to 500GB.
I will try to wait for more info on the new PS3 update (wireless N/new chipset), at least until their PS3-Move bundle cause if they were to release a updated PS3, i would bet that would be the time.

WD5000BEVT seems popular.

Looked it up on amazon, it seems your right, very highly rated and lots of ratings. Looks popular, and is very cheap, so assuming the new 250 and 500Gb PS3's Sony will release arent the only ones with the new chipset and wireless N, aka hopefully the 120gb version will get the same chipset/wifi update...then il be all set to get that new 120gb PS3 (crosses fingers) and buy that HDD to swap with the 120gb.

"Word is that the new PS3s will pack 802.11n WiFi (up from 802.11b/g currently) and will come in 250 and 500GB flavors." http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/14/sony-announcing-ps3-bundles-with-more-storage-faster-wifi-and/

Btw will that 120gb HDD from the PS3 fit into a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop?

The stuff Sony filed to FCC claims that the upcoming PS3 releases will still only have b/g. There may be other hardware updates like a larger HDD but the wifi might stay the same.

Well though based on rumor (like almost everything) that engadget link shows pretty clearly that they heard wireless N. Btw that article is after Engadgets article that showed the FCC your talking about.

The FCC stuff seems harder evidence of any update at all over some people whispering wireless-n. Not that I don't want wireless N, but I'm in the same boat as you. Trying to decide whether to buy a PS3 now or later. Unfortunately any discussion of these rumors stopped after E3.

I suspect they will release something around September, and bundle it with Move. I noticed they say that the $400 PS3/Move bundle has a "PS3" in it but no mention of how big it is. At the moment though, I'd like to believe the FCC stuff so I can ignore the bigger hard drive space and grab a ps3 now. The possibility of wireless-n makes it a harder decision. At least until solid news comes out.

Yup your in a similar spot as i am all right lol. It sucks, honestly i think rumors though nice when they turn out true, are like the downfall of buying electronics. The customer is always waiting months because of some whispers a website reported on hearing. Sucks but...better to be cautious with your hundreds of dollars then to be impulsive i figure.
Though the PS3/Move bundle will be coming out in September, which is 2 months basically, its nice knowing that Sony will put out official info on what the Bundle will be (aka the HDD sizes and if its still B/G wireless). Or at least we will see spy shots from bestbuy or gamestop lol, they are at least good for that.

As for having E3 be the nail in the coffin for anything special in the PS3 wi-fi front, i respectfully disagree. I think HDD size and Wifi upgrade are JUUUUUST small enough improvements that they didnt mention anything. I think though your right if the FCC shows B/G then i bet it will B/G (aka no -N). But if there was a time they would want to release all information, it would be when the PS3/Move bundle info is released. I can easily picture the Engadget article in late August saying how Sony has officially announced the PS3/Move bundle, and how "oh so amazing" the PS3 bundle options include 250 and 500gb, and how wireless has been upped to B/G/N.
Will that article ever come? Idk, but im willing to wait 1-2 months to find out before buying a PS3. Sucks for sony is its easy to wait those 1-2 months cause unlike Xbox, they dont have any "Console seller" exclusives. Not a fan of GTA series and not dieing to play Uncharted 2.

Sorry, I didn't mean E3 squashed any hope for PS3 improvements, I just meant that all the articles I could find were from June 14th or before. After E3 it is only things like "no price cuts!" and people reporting that no updates were announced. I figured there would be SOME talk or new article about these rumors still holding water, but nothing.

I pretty much agree, but then again look at the Microsoft E3 event, 80% Natal with a kid saying "skittles" and people dancing to Michael Jackson, 1.5% was revealing the new 360 (and why thats mixed up is the big reason people arent buying a 360 is RROD fear). All they did was reveal its looks, that short commercial and done. If they would have instead played up that its ___ degrees cooler and runs at ___% less power consumption and no RROD ("cause it cant RROD" _____-Insert audience laughter here) and built in wireless N....then that would majorly have grabbed at LEAST my attention. Instead it was all about the looks, ironic the conference was in California.

Overall my point is the companies arent well in tuned to what we want to know about their products. Them revealing update info in small lettering at the bottom of the page under their "PS3 MOVE BUNDLE!!!!" announcement page until a few weeks before it releases wouldn't surprise me, cause they don't know what we want...case in point, the PS3 "Move", aka motion control..aka Wii HD. They play up gimmicks that they think will be huge, and leave the stuff we actually care about up to the Tech websites like Engadget. If they knew what we wanted to really know, they would like i said, play up a chipset refresh, wireless N (if it has it) and the new 500GB HDD option...not the Playstation Move bundle that includes that animal game or rip off of Wii sports.

It's a smart business decision on PS3's part. Despite Kinect looking awful, if Sony didn't release something like Move and 3D, they wouldn't have grabbed my attention in the first place. Sure there is Twisted Metal and such, but I still would have gone the xbox route for the "new" and "interesting" kinect. This is true even though I may not even get Move/Kinect at all.

I did take note of the new Xbox as wifi is important to me. However, they lost me at the games, kinect, along with an arcade version being sooo much cheaper that I wasn't willing to pay $300 for a 360.

Sony releasing a new PS3 hardware update right before Move comes out will probably get the most people to buy Move. New people will see that it is the best time to buy a ps3/move bundle, and customers with older models may get the bundle just because it gives them a better ps3, the Move, along with saving some cash.

The wireless n would be a bit of an odd feature. It wont improve ping times, so for gaming it shall be the same. The only difference should be the data bandwidth and the signal strength. So unless you have a 300m wide house, or constantly stream files off the ps3 (big files, mp3 and even films wont see much difference, even g is 54mbit/s) Also if you have a wireless g router, there shal be no improvement at all! So there really isn't much reason for it to have n, unless you want it for a cheap media server!

We will see when the numbers come out, but IMO i dont see the move or kinect selling well after the initial release explosion unless priced at <$99. The consumer on the Wii is the consumer that will want motion control(Move) or motion capture (Kinect). I agree with 2007 versions of Microsoft and Sony: " Motion control is a gimmick and we dont see ever getting involved in that part of the market". Just cause you see Nintendo making money off of it, doesn't mean you can make money off of it, your consumer base are completely different types of gamers.

Just my opinion. Btw the info on wireless N is informative. Thank you.

My launch 60GB PS3 sees light use overall. I don't own a 360 or Wii. (I still prefer my games on the PC).

It's main use now is as a media player, and with a 500GB drive in it, it works wonderfully for that. Putting the HD in was a piece of cake and took almost no time at all. Rip and encode the movies on the PC and move em over.

I do still have plenty of old games on it that I like to go back to (Resistance 1, Little Big Planet, Wipeout HD), but I haven't bought many new games lately due to a stint of unemployment in the past 8 months.

It's a good little machine, but it's gotten such a bad rep for being a beast to program for even to this day.

I stream bluray's pretty often and the wireless G isn't nearly enough bandwidth when streamed in their native mode. If I re-encode them I can stream them but I can't fast forward. Lucikly my PS3 is near my gig switch so once I hard wired it, it was all good. Perfect streaming and I can fast forward without issue.

You won't want to use wireless for anything regardless. Even with a horrible 6Mbs connection (since upgraded substantially) I could tell a huge difference between the PS3 connected via 802.11g to the router 5 feet away from it and connected wired to the same router.

The 2101 PS3's are now in stock which are the new 45nm ones. Unless you plan on using the Wireless N, there's no reason to wait. Wireless G is still very fast. If you're going to upgrade the HDD, just get the $299 one.

If you do buy one and want to upgrade the HDD, do the upgrade before you play games, because not everything is transferable. Some save games are locked to consoles and not all PSN content can be moved.

Yeah i definitely plan on doing the upgrade right when i get the PS3. Where are they in stock? How did you find out the new ones that that FCC article shows are in stock?

I will have to check about my Inspiron 6000 being IDE, thanks.

Yeah well technically, in my home theater setup i put a 5 port Gigabyte Switch, so i can have everything be wired..but if a N was to come out, it would suck to not have it, but oh well. Why i will use the PS3 wireless though is 4 of my 5 Ports on my Switch are in use (xbox 360, 2 PC's, port used to give switch internet) so i have one left....i dont plan on doing anything connection intensive on the PS3 besides multiplayer.

How do you stream a blu-ray? You mean from the PSN? They have blu ray quality downloadable movies?

Limahl: What do you mean you rip and encode movies on the PC and move them over? By USB stick or is the PS3 a part of your network and you can drag files over to it?
Sorry about the noobishness, i have no experience with anything PS3.

I'd suggest seagate momentus 7200.4 - 7200 rpm speeds loading by up to 10% compared to stock hdds.
I have 320 gb version and it works perfectly but if you like there's 500 gb version too.

Got a link to the 500gb version? I like the 500gb one shown before cause of how highly bought and rated it is, but i'll take a look at seagate considering it is 7200rpm.

N will be some improvement but not much since most cheap routers are just that, cheap

N standard will not be worth upgrading. If you are going to be streaming true BR quality you might as well hard wire it.

This seems to be a trend on my thread and you might be talkin to that other guy, but in case your not and are telling me that. I only plan to use the PS3 to play blu rays and once in a while play some games. No streaming of anything. :)

I notice a big improvement just dealing with the PSN menus. wired vs. wireless. The wireless implementation on the PS3 is bad.

op just pickup a current ps3 and do not worry about the move bundle (which does not seem like a deal anyway...). plus if you wait 2 monthw for a move bundle and some rumored features, why not wait another 2 months for a holiday bundle or holiday price drop? you rarely really win in the waiting game
