Actually, guns are quite a bit safer than this laser

You can't headshot someone with this and kill them, which you can do with a .22 single-shot bolt action rifle from Walmart. Main danger from these is people aiming indiscriminately around an area, which few people tend to do with firearms, but that's the fault of the people, not the product. Anything is subject to being misused, even with training. I'm not going around town to practice my daggerthrowing or archery skills either.

Guys, seriously. What the hell are you going to do with this thing? I am pro gun, but this shit is just stupid. I still have yet to see anyone provide a practical use for this thing.

Hmm... If it really can blind someone instantly (which I have my doubts about), it could be considered a weapon of sorts. To think that any stupid ass 14 year old kid could order one of these is a bit scary. This seems about as dangerous as a fully automatic pellet gun that makes no sound, fires a continous stream at 186,000 mi/s, and leaves no physical evidence behind. The more I think about it, the more scary it becomes. In a certain respect this is more concerning than a gun because it does not outwardly seem that dangerous, whereas everyone sane knows never to play around with a gun.

I am NOT about government regulation, though. You want one, more power to you. I'd like to think that anyone who owned this fully realizes the shitload of trouble they'd get in if they ever blinded someone. We're talking prison, here.

the spyder III series meets FDA regulations.
activation key and lock etc

also, doesnt the description say this laser is less than 1 watt? why are all these threads saying it is 1 watt. Also, why is this less than 1 watt laser so much cheaper the the 500mW lasers?

the green lasers you see at 500mw etc are so expensive because no diode exists that produces 532nm wavelength light.
It is accomplished by taking a 1064nm IR diode, and pushing the light thru a frequency doubling crystal setup that drops the wavelength to 532nm, this assembly robs power etc. The stronger the green laser the more accurately the crystals have to be aligned etc. This brings alot of cost. The 445nm light were dealing with in this laser is courtesy of a new 445nm diode, and doesn't need to be pumped through a frequency crystal to achieve the wavelength in question. This makes the laser much cheaper then its green counterparts.
Red lasers are made in the same way as this blue one, but not many diodes are in production at this power level.

The <1w marking is due to the fact that the lasers test in at about 1w. Due to the nature of the manufacturing process some can be a little less and some can be a little more. <XXXXmw is the standard marking for lasers of this type. Some more expensive models are metered and guaranteed at a specific power, this however due to the cost is not. + or - 50mw at this power is almost not noticeable.

This can easily be considered a weapon. I use my green laser as such attached to an m4. As I stated in the past. Its a toy, it has no REAL utility. And, IT IS A FELONY, to point this at PEOPLE or anything that might CONTAIN PEOPLE. Cars, buildings, planes, boats, etc etc. This is not a childs play thing. It is meant for grown people with brains.

omg you guys, this laser is probably a 10 or 15mw at most, if even that. blue lasers aren't that powerful ( in mW) compared to their red\ green cousins.

I am still confused. You cant look at it on a wall right? It will blind you right? So how is it a toy then? What are you guys doing with it?

neokeelo, new diode, diffrent from the older 405nm wavelength "blue" lasers.

The Toe, you can with protective eye wear, which is included in the purchase.
But never put the dot closer then 10 feet even with protective eye wear.

Mostly i use mine for green lasers for star pointing.
My red lasers for burning things like electrical tape, balloons and matches.
My green does this as well but my red does it faster.
This blue laser will be used for a combination of burning things and star pointing
ALWAYS with PROPER eye PROTECTION.

Last thing we need is more governmental regulations. One of these days you are going to need a permit too buy toenail clippers.

Yes, because toenail clickers are analogous to a laser than can set fire to your clothes (and skin) blind you and god knows what else.

So yeah, if they make you get a license for a laser, toe nail clippers are just around the corner

OK now I see. Starting to make a little sense now.

Thus the USSA title... :D

I hate locking my gun up to go to california. When i go there from AZ i stop at exit 1, its funny to look over at california and think that if i where to drive only 1 mile further I would be a criminal.

Good thing you do, because I like to shine my laser on the guns...if my aim is good, I can make da ammo go boom

there has been lots of arguing over permits/licenses/guns/etc, but not ONE person has mentioned a non-criminal legitimate use for this item. I'm willing to allow dangerous items in our society if they also serve some sort of service, but what does this thing do in that regard?

I have done so repeatedly in the following thread.

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1525668

Can we please not have two threads on the same frickin topic? This one is for the hot deals aspect, the one linked is for everything else.

Wtf, I ordered one earlier.

WHY DID I ORDER THIS GUYS?? I have no use for it really.:p

but it leaves me with one more question. what would the advantage be of a 500mW green laser as compared to a 1W blue laser? i dont understand. I understand the frequency doubling therefore halving the wavelength but i dont understand the one wavelength at a set wattage compared to another wavelength at a set wattage. highschool physics was all I have taken so far.

Try putting your imagination to good use and I think you can come up with some ideas for using this laser.

Well I am getting several ... and then mounting them to sharks' heads.... then ONE MILLION DOLLARS!!!

All I see in this thread and other thread is a whole bunch of guys harping about the dangers of this laser. I get it. WE GET IT, IT'S DANGEROUS!

Now I want to know what can you do with this?! Burn stuff? Burn what? PCB layout? Metal cutting? Killing weed? Popping the tire of that annoying neighbor? WHAT?!?!?!?!

i'm not sure yet on the visual for the beam i'll see it when i get mine in a couple of weeks.
as for the wavelenghts were talking about light wavelengths. light travels at a bunch of different wave length. we pickup COLOR acording to what wavelength the light is.
532 is green, 640 is red, 445 is blue, 405 or so is uv/blueish i think orange is someplace around 595

1) Get on the Empire State Building
2) Put on a heavy duty Star Lens
3) Wait till night falls
4) Shine down 50000 dots onto the city
5) Watch as you just caused 327 accidents at the same time

you can't actually even put it in anymore, they fixed the cart so you can't discount on the laser.
your not getting screwed out of anything, they fucked up. and notice emails should be going out to those who were affected. but i agree with you. it sucks.

I'm cancelling my order, I've read enough to make me scared to even own the thing.

lol lee7 it comes with eye protection and everything the only thing you need to not do is stare down the beam. or point it at people. and your good to go

Except the eye protection it comes with is only rated for extremely brief exposures, even from reflections.

scary stuff to have this power for so cheap. The only uses I can think of are science-related and the power is probably too big for most of those! Even 1/2 that power will burn though a few micrometes of highly-absorbing stuff really quickly (seconds, tops).

just be CAREFUL with this stuff...this is more dangerous to your eyesight than a firearm.is to your life.

+1 on being careful. Just go to the laser pointer forums and look in the safety sections, you will see tons of posts by 11 year olds with titles like " Is it normal to see black dots in my right eye?" or " I can only see black when I look at green now, what should I do?" ...lol stupid people...

lol neo, yea i get a kick off that forum. And thor, that is true for direct beam to eye exposures. if your careful etc you shouldn't end up in that situation. a momentary exposure is .25 seconds, the time it takes for you to blink. Its sufficient. I've been "playing" with lasers for 4 years. I've yet to have a "momentary exposure" problem. This is due to careful attention to what when and how I lase. never shoot it at something when you dont know how the beam is going to reflect off the surface and you generally remove worry of direct exposure.

Ya, most of the cities where it's really tough to own a gun are the same cities I don't want to walk around in without one.

So why are 24 of these lasers completely innocuous inside of the projector? Is it simply because they are not focused? You are staring at 24W of laser reflected off a large white screen using the projector, but one of these pointers will blind you doing the same thing?

Well, for one they are shining through a color wheel in the projector. It's not direct exposure.

You my friend are in the "responsible" sector of society - i'm guessing you are probably my age - over 30, decent job, and a good person.

However, if you haven't been paying attention, people under 20 these days... well.. they are pretty stupid. Not that we weren't of course, but stupid in a different way.

I want to be able to cut my grass by laying down and sweeping my hand horizontally. Until then...

MORE POWER!
